Saltwater swimming, experiences and tips

I will be swimming in saltwater for the first time in four weeks. Race is on Sunday, I am arriving Friday, so I should be able to take a couple practice swims. There is also a swim clinic that I will be attending on Saturday morning. My concerns are:

1. I ingest (lungs and stomach!) a lot of water while swimming.

2. Saltwater and my eyes don't mix.

Who has tips / techniques / do's and don'ts for saltwater?

Thanks,
Jim

I actually prefer salt water for its buoyancy and because it reminds me of my home in Hawaii.

Make sure you have on good tight goggles. Aquasphere work well, are comfortable and you can buy them online for around $15. If you ingest a lot of water normally try to breath only on your strong side and use the breast stroke for sighting. Too much salt water in your stomach can ruin your event and make you ill. Bring extra water to rinse out your mouth and get rid of the salt taste before you get on the bike.

Good luck.

I always try to swim faster than the sharks. But that's optional.

Hi Jim,

1. I agree that you should bring extra water for transition, and make sure that you hydrate properly on the bike, or you'll cramp up.

2. Definitely get tight fitting goggles. I use the speedo vanquishers for all of my racing, and they work beautifully. Make sure you have a pair that seal properly and fit your face.

Also, you might want to take an extra jug of water for transition to throw over yourself before you hop on the bike. The salt from the sea will dry on you while you're biking and tends to cause serious chaffing if it isn't washed off properly, or if you don't have enough body glide on. I usually just dump it over my shoulders as I'm putting on my helmet (therefore not wasting any time )

I'm sure others have more tips. The last tip from me: just have fun with the extra buoancy!

Don't swallow the water..that's what they kept telling me. There's something to that, try breathign out a little harder and shuttign your mouth when not inhaling/exhaling. try keeping your tounge over the front of your mouth when you open it so you can detect the salt. You will swallow some anyway. I would take tums just before or after it seems to buffer some of the salt (but try this in training & make sure it agrees with you). Also for the rest of the event try using lower sodium drinks and gels (some are much higher than others) but agian train like that and see. I like sour jellybeans to get the taste out of my mouth.

goggles and masks to keep the salt out. Also practice swimmign with your eyes closed and openign them only to site that's what I do if I lose my glasses (or a jellyfish eats the lens see yesterday's w/o repirt).

Re: Saltwater swimming, experiences and tips
I don't mean to hijack the thread but I have a somewhat related training question. I won't be able to get to the beach before my 1/2 mile swim portion of an aquathlon next month - only pool training. Is there some general rule of thumb I could use as a gauge - like 1 mile in the pool will do me good for 1/2 mile ocean? I can swim pretty comfortably for about 30 minutes in a pool. Bump that up to an hour to give myself a fighting chance at comfortably swimming 1/2 mile in the ocean??

Yes. Remember there is a current. My last tri was an ocean swim. I did fine on the way out but got caught in the current on the way back and zig zagged the whole way adding about 300 yards to my swim (as per my time).

Try to at least get in the water before the race start and find out how the current flows so you can compensate against it during the race. Ask local swimmers how the current runs in the area.

Good luck.

Here's an odd one. A couple apple slices in T1 do a good job of getting any salt taste out of your mouth.
