Tri-Shark Classic RR.

Tri-Shark Classic
600yd swim, 13 mile bike, 5K run.

Pre-Race:
I camped out the night before the race at the race site with my parents in their pop up camper. Surprisingly, I slept well until about 3:00 when I awoke to a thunderstorm. Thank goodness it didn?t last long and blew through in about half an hour. Up at 4:00 for a breakfast of Oatmeal and milk followed by a bowl of cereal with a chopped up banana. Later on, I?d have another banana and a gel.

600yd swim:
My swim didn?t pan out the way I wanted it to and I?m not sure why. I felt fine in the water, I just came out slow. Up to this point in my season, I have been pleased with my training and had every reason to think I could reach my goal. I just didn?t have it today. I guess I can?t really complain since only 6 people in my AG had faster swim times. I was shooting for sub 9:00

2006: 9:21
2007: 9:30 for a 9 second loss.

T1:
I guess I?ll have to just live with my mediocre transitions since I can?t think of anything I can do differently. How hard is it to put a helmet and shoes on, grab my bike and go? I sprinted as much as I could out of the water and did everything without hesitation.

2006: 1:03
2007: 0:56 for a 7 second improvement.

13 mile bike:
Ah, the bike. I love it. The plan this year: Find Kyle May, whom I saw in T1 and hang with him. I knew if I could do this, I would have a good chance of getting my coveted AG award for this race. My main strategy was to hammer the bike, but still save a little for the run. As I think back on the race, I was pushing the bike, but I know I could have gone faster. I don?t know how much faster, since I didn?t want to blow up on the run, I made myself fight the urge to just go all out. I passed Kyle about half way through and then he passed me after about a mile. I then passed him on an uphill and wouldn?t see him again until exiting T2. As I went by, I told him: ?Let?s go get some trophies.? I?m satisfied with my bike split and although I didn?t go all out, I was satisfied with my time and that I controlled myself sticking to the strategy.

2006: 32:37
2007: 32:13 for a 24 second improvement and 24.21 MPH

T2:
Did the usual pull my feet out and coast in on 1 pedal the last 30yds of the bike. However, as I was running in, I kicked my pedal and broke my little toe on my right foot. No time to do anything and nothing could be done, so I pulled my shoes on, grabbed my sunglasses and race belt and followed Kyle out of T2.

2006: 0:57
2007: 0:59 for a 2 second loss.

Run Start

5K run:
I usually go out way to fast and blow up on the run. This time, I was able to control the urge. I actually might have gone a little slow at first, but the plan was to get my HR under control and then gradually increase the pace. I could see Kyle about 40yds ahead of me and was gradually gaining on him. I caught and passed him about ¾ of a mile into the run and was gradually reeling other people in. I don?t know how many I passed or how many passed me, my main concern was to just keep going. Ignore the pain, heck make it hurt! This is supposed to hurt. It did hurt, but it was fun! I was a little concerned that I hadn?t passed anyone else in my AG on the run since it meant I was either in the lead, or so far behind I was out of the awards. I found out later that I was in the lead. I got passed by one person that I did notice was in my AG a little past the turnaround. I tried to hang with him, but his pace was just too much. When I got to the last half mile, I could still see him way ahead of me and I picked up the pace. I couldn?t gain any on him, but I gave it my all, sprinting to the finish as fast as my body would let me go.

2006: 22:48
2007: 22:18 for a 30 second improvement.

Total time:
2006: 1:06:46
2007: 1:05:57 for an overall improvement of 49 seconds.
31/466 overall
2/38 AG.

Post Race:
I am very pleased with my overall performance in this race. This is the most competitive and toughest race top to bottom of all the races in my season. It has been a goal of mine since getting into triathlon to get an AG award here. I am ecstatic with 2nd, even though 1st would have been nice. This is the first race where I?ve actually had a plan throughout and didn?t just go compete. I really love the strategy, planning and mental games that I played, they all make a very fun sport even more fun.

Results can be seen here[/URL" target="_blank">. Note: I am listed as 35th, but the numbers didn?t get adjusted after they removed the 4 teams in front of me at 15, 16, 20 and 24.

Way to go! Great effort. Congrats on the hardware.

How is the toe?

I guess that is problem when you are already quite fast in the water -- hard to show a lot of improvement.

That is blazing on the bike, and you ran really good.

One thing that helped me in transitions was to go and watch a tri. I went to a pretty large sprint tri once and just watched. Seeing how those front guys got in and out so fast really helped. It sucked not to be racing, but the lessons learned were well worth it.

Terrific! I wouldn't worry about T2, how much faster could you possibly go??? And as for the swim, if it was open water the course could easily have been a little long. Those buoys drift around like they have a mind of their own, you know.

Anyway, glad you had a good race. How's the toe??

Speedy, speedy, speedy! Nice job on all fronts, IMO.

Hard to get faster at transitions that are already under a minute, dude.

Congrats on the hardware!
Jen

That's one heck of a RR and a finish. 2nd place with a broken toe? Wow. Nicely done. Your training posts have been amazing so it's no surprise to me that your RRs are following suit. Congratulations. Your hard (understatement) work is paying off.

Ok, first you would die if you saw my transition times...um 4:42 and 4:40...I think I took a cat nap in T1...

You did awesome, but I am not suprised.......you have got to be one of the most determined, focused and consistent trainer I have seen...all your hard work is paying off....good for you!

Great, great job!

HOLY SMOKES! Awesome race and RR! Your pics are great! I agree, I don't know what to tell someone who is disappointed with sub 1 minute transitions. Especially T1.

Congrats on the hardware..it's a pretty cool piece of hardware at that! Way to race according to strategy! WooHoo!

This is awesome...

Although your swim time was seconds off your best for this course, you still kick butt on the swim. And what the heck really is a few seconds. Nada.

Because you make them up with another kick butt time in T1. You call it medicore. For you. For everybody else it ROCKS. In fact, most people on these boards would kill for that T1 time.

But it doesn't end there. No. In fact, it gets better. Much better.

Look again at your bike split. Holy fickle-beater! Wow. Dude, that's over 24 miles per hour. Wow.

And it doesn't end there.

Look at T2.

And look at your run speed off a bike that was 24 mph but still under hammer. Wow.

Dude, way to take this race by the horns and show 'em who's boss, because I know you had this sucker in your crosshairs for a long while.

Awesome.

And nice read about chasing Kyle!

A 30sec improvement on the run after a 24sec improvement on the bike (and at those speeds)...nice job. And with the kind of consistent work you put in the pool, I'm sure the swim time will fall nicely in line next time around. Did you get a good warmup in there this time?

Awesome job Mike. When I read about your broken toe I thought you were going to have to take the run easy or walk - I guess I was a little off. That bike average is insane too; very impressive.

Daggone dude, excellent!

Solid across the board. Where to pick up that time? Man o man... that's going to be a tough one.

Congrats on nailing it!
