Are traffic rules suspended during a triathlon?

Or do police just "look the other way?" Specifically I'm wondering about speed limits - I could easily see racers exceeding the speed limit on a downhill section in a school zone for example.

Just curious. Imagine getting a speeding ticket on your bike during a race! On the other hand, it's hard to believe that race directors receive exemptions from city, county, and state laws for each race.

All the cops are too busy manning the intersections on the race course to ticket anyone!

Re: Are traffic rules suspended during a triathlon?
I managed to get a speeding ticket while driving home from work last Thursday. Since then I've been a little paranoid: going the speed limit and keeping an eye out for cops.

Anyway, I'm racing in Mooseman this weekend and I'm cruising down a hill and making good time when I see this motorcycle cop parked along side the road. As soon as I saw him I instinctively went for the brakes before I told myself I was being foolish, so I went back onto the aerobars. Right after I pass the cop, he pulls out and hovers behind me and off to my left. I kept going full speed, but my heart rate probably jumped a good 10 bpm and stayed there till he passed me.

I would LOVE to get a ticket for riding my bike too fast. About the only place it would happen is in the local state park where the speed limit is 15 MPH.

But what do they write on it, since I wouldn't have my license with me.
Last year, they had this mobile radar in my neighborhood, where the speed limits are 15mph, and everytime I'd try to speed by it until it would flash (happened around 20mph).

Re: Are traffic rules suspended during a triathlon?
We have a park in West Houston that has a speed limit of 10 mph. The "trail" is paved and a bit wider than your average sidewalk, but it is called a hike and bike trail. Anyways, about a year or so ago the cops started ticketing bikers left and right for going over 10mph!!!

Needless to say many letters were written to the local state representative but I'm not sure anything ever came of it. We just don't bike there anymore. Pretty sucky though, if you ask me.

Re: Are traffic rules suspended during a triathlon?
Most tris do not have a totally closed course. Police and volunteers will do traffic detail at intersections and a lot of times race directors will inform you that you will be subject to local laws. Stay right, watch for traffic and some will tell you to obey stop signs if nobody is at the intersection blocking traffic. Speed limits usually do not apply. Last summer I did a race here in Michigan where the bike course was pretty much totally open to traffic and they had a classic car show down the road by the turnaround point. It was kind of cool flying by these old Mustangs and Camaros on a bike.

Re: Are traffic rules suspended during a triathlon?
I believe the Boulder Peak Triathlon is enforcing a speed limit on the backside of Old Stage Rd. 25 mph or something. this is after last year a woman hit a bear while going 35 mph. You can easily coast up to 40 mph there without even being aero. I don't know if they'll do DQ's or time penalties for violators.

On another note I was pulled over on my campus here at work while leaving to ride home, 38 mph in a 25 mph zone. The cop was flying in his truck to catch up to me as I was also blowing through the stop signs on my way out of the gate. He caught me about 1/4 mile from freedom (he had to chase me for almost a mile), but only gave me a warning. His exact words were "I kinda feel lick a d**k giving a ticket to a guy on a bike, so I'm just going to give you a warning." Little did he know I wanted it, it would've been framed. My coworkers thought it was hilarious though as they all saw me pulled over as they left work.

It wouldn't have been an official city cop/state trooper ticket, but I would've framed it anyways.

Who knew the bear lobby would have that much pull?
