wetsuit Qs

My first sprint triathlon in a few weeks, so I apologize in advance for the silly question. I'm considering renting a wetsuit. What clothes do I put under it for the bike/run? Also, since this is my first, my goal is just to get through it. I can do the distances. I haven't tried any "brick" workouts. I am just coming off a marathon, so I feel pretty fit. Help/suggestions?

Re: wetsuit Qs
You wear a triathlon suit under a wetshuit...

It's a sprint...what will the water conditions be? If it's 70+ for water temps I would say no wetsuit needed...

Re: wetsuit Qs
I agree with Tithers, don't bother with the wetsuit in a sprint, unless the water is freezing.

Wear your Tri top and tri shorts under it, or swim in that.

Do at least one brick before the race. You have time. Believe me, you don't want to run off the bike for the first time ever in the race. Also, it takes a few minutes to get your legs back when you do this, so don't worry. It takes me from 4-10 minutes for my legs to feel somewhat normal.....

Good luck!

Re: wetsuit Qs
I disagree with the other posters. I'd wear a wetsuit for any distance over 300 meters as long as the water isn't too warm and I won't overheat. The speed advantages you get are worth it. I did a race that was only 250 meter swim and there were several fast people there using a wetsuit.

I wear exactly what I'll be wearing on the bike under the wetsuit. That usually includes tri shorts, sport bra and cycling top.

Use lots of Body Glide on your arms, legs and neck to reduce chafing and to help you get the suit off after the swim.

Good luck!

Re: wetsuit Qs
I'm on Dawn's side for this one....wear a wet suit if the water temps are cool enough that you won't overheat AND you are sure that you can get the wetsuit off fast enough after the swim so as to not lose any of the time advantage you have made from wearing it in the first place!

wear whatever you are comfortable racing in. If this is your first race and you don't have a tri-suit or tri-specific clothing, then maybe wear a bathing suit under your wetsuit and either race in the bathing suit or put on shorts and a top. Since you are racing to complete and not for time then you can spare the few extra moments in transition and race in clothing you already own. No need to buy extra clothing at this point.

Re: wetsuit Qs
Are you going to ride the bike portion in running shorts? If so, then it should be fine, other than you might have a bunching problem that you wouldn't with tri or bike shorts.

If you're renting a wetsuit, I would imaging that you haven't had practice taking one off and unless you are going to rent it twice, you won't be able to practice much before the race. Therefore, I would forgo the wetsuit as you might shave seconds off the swim, but lose a minute wrestling the thing off and with no wetsuite peelers, maybe more.

But if it's a confidence thing, or a security thing, then by all means, go ahead and use it.

Re: wetsuit Qs
Lots of places where you rent wetsuits give them to you for 3-4 days. If you can practice taking it on and off and get some OW swim time in one give it a try. I will tell you I did two OW tri's last year without a wetsuit then my first one this year used the suit I just bought. Only had 5 minutes in the water with it prior to the race. The suit totally freaked me out during the race. So unless you get some practice in it, it could have a negative effect on your race. The other option would be to rent one for a long weekend when you don't have a race and get a real feel for one.

Also, just fyi, in the tri's I did last summer without a wetsuit, I wore a two piece suit with a really good support top and bottoms I had also tried out running and biking in. NEVER anything new on race day. Then when I got out of the water just put my bike shorts (didn't have tri shorts back then) on over my bathing suit bottoms and a running top over the bathing suit top. It was enough support like a sports bra, but then remember I had tried this out prior to race day.

Good Luck!

Re: wetsuit Qs
I rented a westuit for my sprint (750 yd swim) this weekend. The place I rented from rents for a week. So I picked it up Tuesday. Tried it on. I will swim with it Sat. to try it out before race day (I have used wetsuits in the past), and then hopefully the water temp on Sun. will be wetsuit legal so this won't all be for naught. I will wear my tri shorts and tri top under the wetsuit.

Whatever you plan on wearing on the bike is what you should wear under the wetsuit.

Is there a buoyancy benefit to a wetsuit? If so, how much?

Re: wetsuit Qs
Brett -- from what I hear, yes. The lower half is a thicker rubber and gives leg bouyancy equivalent to swimming with a pull bouy ('cept you can still kick). I haven't tried it though!

Boggs - I plan to be over at the Yorktown beach in the am to acclimate and possibly try out the wet suit. FYI - the beach is often pretty crowded in the afternoons. It was pretty packed yesterday in the 4-6 range. I haven't seen the promised Thursday night post of water temp readings. Air temps are now suppose to be a high of 80 for Sunday! Woot!
