Should I "Tri" when I am not a swimmer??

I am really interested in starting some training for a shorter triathlon (i.e. a sprint distance). I have ran five marathons and teach cycling at my local fitness center. I have good endurance and think I would enjoy this challenge. I have no problem cycling outdoors and then running, but the thought of swimming makes me cringe. Sure, I took swimming lessons as a kid so I can get from point A to point B, but I never learned anything about technique and I feel ridiculous even trying to swim 2 laps in the pool!

Has anyone been here? What are your recommendations for me? Should I try this?? I think I would really love the multi-sport competition. I am meeting with a friend who happens to be a swim instructor tomorrow morning. She is going to observe my "stroke" which is basically non-existent and then help me become more fluid in the water. I hope this helps, but I feel so nervous about having my face in the water. Believe it or not, I teach water fitness classes 3-4 days per week right now. :-) Insight would be appreciated!

You can't fail unless you tri!
Sounds like you got an awesome base along with support from you peers. Get some milage in to boost the confidence and you will be rocking in no time!

Go for it!

Both Ussoccer and I started out with a fear of water and look at that ... we both ended up doing Ironman. There are lots others here on this forum, all distances, that had very little or no swimming just like you ... you will have lots of support.

Just have fun and be patient with improvement.

Sally

I say definitely try a tri. you're doing all the right things to get started. If you want to get into multisport racing, but you're just not ready to tackle the swim portion, find a swimmer friend and enter a relay division. Or find a duathlon. I'm sure once you do a multisport event, you will be HOOKED!

Uh... Why do you have to decide now?

Why don't you just try swimming for a bit and see how that goes? Do a couple of training sessions - maybe even an open water swim someplace. See how you like it!

If you have a positive experience (and I'm sure you will), THEN worry about signing up for a Tri. One step at a time.

Du or du not, there is no tri.

/sorry, someone had to say it.

Yes! Get in the pool for a couple months and you'll at least be able to survive the swim, then rock the course on the bike and run. The swim is the shortest portion of a tri, anyway. Go for it.

Re: Should I "Tri" when I am not a swimmer??
swimming is nice to have up your sleeve if you get injured from running, cycling is too. It's a very technique intensive sport, just taking a brute force approach to training doesn't help if your stroke mechanics are lousy and it's hard to see yourself, so you need to get some help from the onset.

I do the duathlons because they are fun and I don't have time to swim, plus I don't enjoy it. It opens up some doors for me in terms of racing, plus now I can do stuff like XC running races. There are a lot of options if you decide you just hate swimming, the tris are also pretty costly if you like to race a lot.

Re: Should I "Tri" when I am not a swimmer??
Go for it!!! I wasn't a swimmer before getting into Tri. Sure, I had the lessons when I was a kid and could swim enough to get by. I started actual training after I singed up for my first try and could barely swim a lap without dying. I am now entering my 4th year of triathlon and can easily go 4000yds non-stop. You can do it too! Ask any of the others on this board, as mentioned above...look at Silly Sally and Ussoccer and how far they have come!

Re: Should I "Tri" when I am not a swimmer??
I would suggest getting more experience just swimming period. Even for an experienced open water swimmer, the swim can be the most intimidating discipline of the triathlon. The swim?especially the start?could essentially be considered a contact sport. I have unintentionally swum over the top of another competitor?while I was getting swum over. For an experienced swimmer that can be demoralizing. For someone who is an inexperienced swimmer who happens to be in their first triathlon, that situation could be dangerous. I?m all for people trying new things. But a negative first experience is counterproductive. I really think that you need to just get some more swimming in, then some open water swimming, then some swimming with a group in close quarters.

Re: Should I "Tri" when I am not a swimmer??
Join the club....I dislike swimming and am not good at it at all. I actually failed swimming lessons as a kid...twice. Even with my limited swim ability, I have done pretty good on the sprints, I just choose the ones with the shortest swim.

I have decided I want to do longer tris...soooo, I'm simply working on it. It's slow going and frustrating sometimes, but I'm determined...If you want to do it...go for it!!!

Try humming. Each time your face goes in the water, hum. That will force you to exhale underwater, which gives you a lot more time to inhale while your face is in the air.

Re: Should I "Tri" when I am not a swimmer??
I'm a bad swimmer too! I did a mini sprint a couple years ago and ended up just doing the breast stroke (which I can do for hours! lol!). It worked. This time around I'm determined to learn to freestyle. I'm taking swimming lessons and its coming slowly but surely. I'm looking into taking a Total Immersion workshop when there's one in my area. That might be worth checking out.

Also, I'm trying to remember that swimming just takes time like running and biking. I couldn't run a mile after I had my last baby in december, but now I can run 6+. It didn't happen overnight . . . it just takes work and time!

The Total Immersion DVD and book were a big help to me. Some folks even check them out of the library.

Keep at it and you'll get there!
