Subaru TRI Naperville IL RR

I've been lurking since I found about a new ruling at work about posting on message boards (a big NO-NO) and our PC at home has been out of commssion. But here it goes...
I did the Subaru Women's Triathlon yesterday--my 3rd year doing this event. 2 years ago, my time was 1:45, last year 1:39 and this year 1:36! (first year was on a hybrid bike though )

Breakfast-coffee, small glass of OJ and whole wheat bagel with peanut butter. PowerBar Gel 15 minutes before swim.

750m swim
20k bike
5k run

Overall 1:36
Swim 15:04
t1 4:26
bike 44:44
t2 2:22
run 30:00

AG 49/174
overall 603/1889

I've been part of coached group for the first time over the past 8 weeks and the coach has been pushing me to improve on my freestyle (in the past I've relied on breast stroke). I' ve been trying to build up my endurance and felt pretty confident going into this event. I managed to do about 50% freestyle and 50% breast stroke--only to find out that I lost 30 seconds this year! Oh well--in the long run my legs did feel less tried afterwards. The transition from the swim to the bike is a very long uphill run-some of it on sand. The bike felt good-I was really surprised that I did not improve more on my bike time from last year. I purposely did not look at my watch following the swim-I was playing a mental game with myself. I wanted to push myself as much as possible, without relying on my watch. I didn't look at it again until I crossed the finish line. The run felt pretty good as well. The weather was ideal, 70 and overcast.

All in all, I'm pleased that I improved over last year. I do realize that I need to continue working on my freestyle, but it was disappointing to see a slower swim time. My other goal is to get faster on the bike. I had the usual delimma of asking myself if I should push harder on the bike and just deal with it if my legs feel like rubber for the run? This was my B race-A race is in August.

What a great improvement! Don't feel bad about the swim time, you were using a different stroke....and in the long run the swim probably helped you on the run and bike anyway.......just keep up the good work and think how you can work on it all thru the winter and next year when you come back.....you'll change the swim time then!

Great job!

Re: Subaru TRI Naperville IL RR
Nice going! Consistent improvement each year. If that was an open water swim it isn't always possible to measure times year to year as the buoys may not be in the exact spots. Keep working on your freestyle and your times should continue to improve.

Don makes an excellent point about the buoy placement in open water swims. You've made great improvements over the years and as someone who used to rely on breast stroke, I can definitely say that with continued improvement of your freestyle, you will see your swim times drop. Not to mention how much better your legs will feel exiting the water.

Congratulations on a great race.

Now get back to work and don't let anyone catch you reading this!

Great race and congrats on the improvement! I was happy that it was a bit cooler than expected and cloudy - I hate running the final stretch down Aurora Ave when the sun is pounding on you!

Good luck with your "A" race! (Which one is it?)

Re: Subaru TRI Naperville IL RR
Nice race, pinchburg. Congrats on consistent PRs over the course of doing the race. It's good you are learning to swim freestyle - you will get faster. And, like others have pointed out, open water swim distances vary, so that may also account for your longer time. Sounds like you pushed it nicely on the bike and run. But, to answer your question, yes, next time push harder and just deal with rubber legs on the run. Get your legs used to it during training bricks. Get your swim down and push the bike, and you'll see even more improvement next year!
