How much longer was your HIM Half Mary than a Stand Alone Half Mary?

I am trying to set some time goals, estimates for my HIM and as it's my first, don't really know what to expect.

My best Half Mary was 2:01 and my slowest 2:13....I was guessing I should expect 2:30 for it in my HIM? Does that sound about right?

Also, how much slower is your bike pace from Oly to HIM?

I figure the swim should be about the same as it's not really much longer.

Thanks!

For both my HIM's I wasn't 100% as trained as I could have been in the run...

For the first I hadn't really run a half marathon. The only one I had run was 2 years earlier and as part of a longer run - I think my time was 2:27. My marathon PR 4 months before the HIM was 5:16. My run for the first HIM was a 2:55 or something. Yikes! I just didn't really feel like running! I made a friend and was more content having a friend than running alone. Also, I think my longest run between the marathon and the race was 9-10 miles.

Fast forward to October of last year for my 2nd HIM. I was right in the middle of training for a January marathon, so was on a better schedule. I ran a 1/2 marathon in 2:24 two weeks before the HIM. My longest run before that was 10 miles, so it was a bit of a jump, but ok. At that HIM I ran a 2:40 split. I could not have gone much faster that day...also because I didn't think I could go any faster. This year I will aim for a 2:30-2:35 in the same HIM as it will be 3 weeks after I run the Chicago full marathon (thinking I will be way better trained on the running, if I don't break down somewhere along the way).

So long story short, I ran a 2:24 stand alone and a 2:40 HIM.

Did the 1/2 at Hawaii 70.3 in 2:19. I died in the heat. First 5 miles was mostly asphalt and 0 shade. Did the Hibiscus Half mary 2 weeks later in 1:45. The biggest difference is that the half mary starts at 5am with temp around 72 and the course was generally flat except the hills around Diamond Head. Didn't start the 70.3 run until 10:30 with temp around 90 and that course had more undulations. Lots of factors to concider when trying to guesstimate your time.

I'm willing to bet if you can stay hydrated on the bike, your half mari for the HIM will be in the low 2:1???

You want to see the extreme between the two for me?

Fastest stand alone 1:35 - Last year was my 1st 1/2 IM, and it was extremly hot and humid on a very hilly run course. My time (I hate to admit this) was 2:42. I was uncomfortable I had to walk a lot. I went from a 7:00 pace to over a 12:00 pace between the two.

I have this same race in two weeks, and I have MUCH more prepared for the run portion and hope to finish around 1:45.

Run
Two HMs: 2:04:49 and 1:58:00.
Four HIMs, run splits: 2:46:17, 2:28:26, 2:24:47, 2:40:37

Your success on the run will depend on your nutrition, your bike, and the weather. Luckily, you can control the first two.

Bike
My pace for the bike is maybe 1mph slower for HIM vs. Oly, but it's tough to get a real fair comparison because of course differences.

Swim
I too used to think that Oly vs. HIM swim shouldn't be that different, but I do notice the difference. The Oly is 1500m (or 1640y). The HIM is 1.2mi (or 2112y). So it's about 500y more (or 30% further). Not as big a diff as the run/bike diffs, but also not what I'd consider "about the same".

Not that I run them often or train very well for them, but my last 1/2 m was off tri training and 1:31 and my two HIM's were 1:48 and 1:44. I cramped up some in both.
