Mountain Bikes??

Is a mountain bike OK for doing my first duathlon? I found a reasonable priced one that seems like it would be good for my first bike. I sat on an actual road bike but it felt so awkard and different with the thin wheels and leaning so far over. I don't have a bike now and I just train on the bikes at the gym.

and...What the difference between a mountain bike and a recreational bike?

Any input on buying my first bike would be helpful. I'm 19 and a poor college student so I can't really afford anything over $150ish.

Thanks everyone
~Kelsey

Re: Mountain Bikes??
It kind of depends on what you are going to use it for. If you want a good all-around bike (races, riding around town, riding on trails, etc...), go with the mountain bike. A road bike is pretty limited as to where you can ride it. You will get a better bike for $150 than you will a road bike too. I'd probably go used, though, as you will get a much better bike for the money. You can always switch out the tires to a smoother tread for road races. You can do some races on that bike, then you can decide later when you have more cash if you want to fork out the money for a road bike as well. I have both, and the road bike does make a huge difference on the road, but it isn't practical to ride with my kids on the bike trail (they ride REALLY slow). If you're just doing it for fun, it really doesn't matter what kind of bike you have. You'll see everything.

If you are just buying it for the duathlon I would go with a used road bike. A mountain bike will be slow and discouraging. Even if you are a good runner, a mountain bike will slow you down and hurt your time. If you want an all around bike then a hybrid would be better.

at that price range, you'll be looking at kind of a klunker bike. If you plan to mostly road ride, maybe a used road bike would be fun, but like a $500 car, you can be buying a lot of problems if you don't know what you are doing--ask around and see if you canget some help with the purchase.

Re: Mountain Bikes??
I had a good mountain bike when I Started riding. 3 months later I bought a road bike. If that is your price range start saving the run in the 500 to 700 (starter) range and go up from there. Yes you will be slower on a mountain bike and can switch the tires for road. If you are looking to be competitive invest in a good road bike. Check the classifieds, e-bay, and etc. I know guys I ride with the have come up with some good deals. Be careful that you get a bike that fits you. Good Luck!
