Good luck on your finals Alex.

7 miles via bike to the train this morning....thinking I'll just do the 7 miles home and then a 4 mile run tonight (versus 20 miles home via bike).

Felt great to be back on my bike again

Alex--good luck on your finals!

In just a bit I'll be heading back up to the bike shop to test ride bikes. I hate this! It's 200x worse than buying running shoes. Wrong shoes and you are out $100 at most. Wrong bike and you are out $2000. OUCH!!! This bike has to last me a good 10 years or more.

It's gonna be a L-O-N-G day. Hubby kicked #1 off the computer before he left for work (dog hadn't been taken out and had pottied in the hosue, all because son hadn't taken her out before getting on the computer). Sons 3 and 4 were fighting over a cereal box, so I told them they were done with breakfast. Then they went to the family room and were fighting over the couch, blanket and remote control. #2 isn't even up yet...............

Re: Tuesday June 5th
hello all

Doing a seminar tonight, so going into work late. Had a nice relaxing long morning. (sorry 4boys, I remember those days. Just keep thinking one day will ask yourself where did time go?)

Ran at 8 am and by than the heat was on. Took the hilly short loop. Did 3.92 at 10:15 pace. My time has really slowed down and not sure why. My training runs have included more hills and long runs are on the rough trails. Not sure if maybe I need to do more easy runs.

Past couple runs I have been stop worrying about the time and just running the course. This seems to help me relax & work on pushing harder on hills/mileage, but the time still sucks. Still doing the Hal's intermediate half program and trying not to do more than scheduled.

Well, everyone else have a great day.

Yay! I got to run today. 4.2 miles in 46:44.

Good luck on finals Alex

4boys - Are you getting a new bike or unhappy with the one you just got? Maybe I missed a post from yesterday or something...sorry if so.

Ellen - Glad you got to run, too

Nirvana - I wish we had drizzle. Kind of a haze this morning. I guess they call it June Gloom in SoCal. I was happy to see it myself.

Apple - Sorry you are disappointed with your times. But disappointed relative to what? McMillan predictors? Daniel's VDOT tables? Something else?

Have a great day all!

Hello everyone,

Day two of Pfitz 18/55 calls for rest, so I guess that's what I'll do. I think I may end up running the Helvetia Half Marathon this Saturday. I haven't trained for it, but since I've never ran a half before it would be my PR! We'll see...

Re: Tuesday June 5th
What a day for a run or whatever it takes to get out. Gorgeous here in Northern VA.

I'm still trying to grasp what happened in my workout last night. It was simply amazing. I went down to the local high school track to do a tempo workout. My original called for 2x20 at "10k pace" and I decided to do it on the track because I wanted to get an accurate idea of just how much ground I was covering during these runs. So after 1200 warmup, stopping to stretch at 800, off I went. I put the watch on 20-minute countdown and decided to focus on just counting laps as opposed to watching splits. Still, though I started off quickly -- :86 for the first 400, 3:02 at the 800. After that I stopped paying attention to splits. But as the run progressed I could feel myself getting more relaxed and had an inkling I was actually getting faster rather than tiring. I started to wonder - could I actually make 5k during this run? If I did it would be post-40 PR for me, by a lot. The closer I got to finishing, the more I realized it was going to happen! I was in that elusive zone, running really fast yet feeling totally relaxed. As I hit 12.5 laps I looked down at the watch...still 1:12 to go! Holy ****, I had just run an 18:48!!! And then I nearly made it another 400 before the countdown beeper went off!

I celebrated the accomplishment by giving myself the second 20 minute tempo off and did 5x300 (100 recovery) instead. I was gassed but still hit the 300s in :58, 1:02, 1:04, 1:06, 1:06.

Anyway, on the 5k, I haven't run that fast since high school...a quarter century ago. I'm still not sure I believe it. My first thought was I must have miscounted the laps but I was being very careful about that and firmly believe I counted them right. Moreover, the Woodson track is a very fast surface, sometimes I felt like it was pulling me along.

So now the question is, did I just get lucky and catch lightning in a bottle last night, or did I just have a monster breakthrough? I hope it's the latter but am still too stunned to completely believe it.

The other question is, will I have anything left for indoor soccer tonight?

Have great runs out there. Alex, good luck with exams. Study hard and do well...college coaches look not just at times when they recruit.

Re: Tuesday June 5th
Morning all!

Alex- Good luck on finals!!!! You're almost there!!!

4boys- hope that bike works out for you

Apple- it makes sense to be slower on trails and w/ hills. Do you feel like you're slower doing the same course that you were able to do faster before? Maybe your foot turnover has slowed with the harder terrain. In that case, doing some flat runs faster would help I think (sort of the idea of track workouts, right?) Hope you find your speed again soon

Brian- The half sounds like fun I say go for it and have fun!

CMJ- WOW!!!! That's awesome! Congratulations on finding some incredible speed last night within yourself and getting an amazing time on that track! I'm guessing this is a breakthrough and we're going to be seeing some amazing times from you in the future!

everyone else- great jobs out there. Sounds like some good weekday running

Still a bit sore from the race but not too bad Going to try for 6 or so, though maybe more? I haven't decided. I'll see when I get out there I guess!

have great ones all

CMJ - Wow, awesome time!

Addy - congratulations on your marathon! You should be very proud!

Have a great day everyone!

Re: Tuesday June 5th
Another 3 mile run for me today later this afternoon. It looks like we have some quality runs this morning.

Alex---Only 3 days left, good luck.

4boys--Hope the bike situation works out and you find the bike that works for you.

Brian--If you are still in good shape and your conditioning is there it should be a fun time.

CMJ--Good job on the 20min tempo and the 5k time. I believe you will have some great races. I have been running for 3 or 4 years now after not running for nearly 10 years after high school cross country and I am starting to hit my zone. My training runs are feeling faster and relaxed. Looks like the same thing is happening to you. Enjoy the speed.

Have a great afternoon everyone.

Re: Tuesday June 5th
cmj - Amazing !!!! Nothing like that feeling when you know you are in the moment of making a PR.

Addy - same course, slower times. Never thought about the foot turnover, but you could be right.

Billy - disapointed compaired to my previous time. I am getting slower!!! My average pace was between 9:15 - 9:45 mile. Now past 5 weeks I have been averaging 10:15-10:45. uugh. Maybe I am putting too much emphasis on time or maybe it isn't that big of a deel to slow down certain times.

Kfuller - thanks, I hope you're right. My background is similar to yours so what you say here is really encouraging. I ran HS and college XC/track, retired after my junior year of college, then didn't compete again for 18 years. I don't ever expect to run like I did back in those days, but it feels good to know at least some of the old mojo is coming back.

Apple - sounds like you're just going through a tired phase in your training. You can probably push through it and get back to your standard once your body adjusts to the increased workload, but if all else fails don't be afraid to take a break. Sometimes it's the best thing.
