Friday August 10

Good morning everyone.

I hope everyone is having a cool day running today. I have a scheduled day of rest and I think I really need it right now. I am going to spend most of the day doing nothing but hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate.

Yesterday I was able to put in 9 miles at lunch, vs the 12 scheduled. I ran on a TM to stay a little cool and not get too dehydrated as I knew I had a long day. Well the gym was hot and no fan blowing so I cut it short.

I began to hydrate the remainder of the day until it was time for the change of command ceremony. It was hot and very humid. The heat index was around 110 or higher. Left the office around 5 PM waiting for the ceremony to start at 6. It was hot and sweat was just pouring down. Not to mention we were out there in uniform (long sleeves and long pants, with a cotton beret on). About 30 minutes or so into the ceremony my body just gave out. Everything around me just started to go black, so I took a knee. It cleared up so I stood up and next thing I know I was behind the formation with the medics asking me if I was OK. No clue how I got there. I was at least 20 yard behind were I was standing. Anyhow, two IV bags later I was release from the medics to go home.

There was absolutely nothing I could do about it. No matter how hard I fought the fatigue and dehydration the body just said that was it. I was not the only one the black out yesterday. There must have been at least 30 or more.

Happy running all.

I am schedule for 20 tomorrow in the Pfitz plan, but I am also registered to run a 5K. Not quite sure what I am going to do yet. I may plan on doing both. 10 ? 12 mile warm up 5K race with 3 mile cool down. I think it will all depend on how I feel in the morning.

Good Morining

Dave - good to hear from you!. Pay attention to the signs your body gives. I am thinking there is not a lot you can do about the military schedule, but if your body needs to recover let it at times when you can.

Well, we bought the car on Wednesday it's nice, but like I said I HATE investing in a car. 07 Ford Fusion. Atleast it starts.

Yesterday I missed my 4 m, so today I will have to catch up at the gym on the TM. No time for outdoor running. !!!!
Race on Sunday and looks like the temps will be nice.

Great day all.

Re: Friday August 10
Wow...a bit of a quiet Friday. Maybe a lot of people are off today?

Anyway, it's Friday, which means spinning and stretching for me at lunchtime. It will be interesting to see how my body responds to back-to-back cycling days, having done 18 miles of biking on the roads and trails of Fairfax County yesterday. But I think it will set me up well for tomorrow's 17-mile long run. After running hard earlier in the week my knees were pretty sore, but today they feel relatively good, and that's after sitting in the cramped nosebleed seats at RFK last night to watch DC United vs. LA Galaxy...in case you hadn't heard, some guy named Beckham made his debut in Major League Soccer. But our boys in Black & Red won anyway!

Dave - I'm not a military person either and probably can't begin to grasp the physical demands that type of life puts on you, but at least as far as the running goes, listen to your body and ramp it back up only when you feel ready. You've got such a tremendous base down I can't imagine you losing much ground over this.

Apple - congrats on the new car. Still loving my Toyota Prius (bought in December '05). Hope you get to run today, even if it's indoors. And oh yeah, big series for the Phillies this weekend. Jamie's turn in the rotation comes up, too!

A great Friday to all!

Morning Everyone,

Dave - I know that those ceremonies are killer under the best of circumstances let alone that kind of heat and your training schedule. Take it easy before you get back out there with your full on schedule.

Apple - Nothing like a car that starts :-) If nothing else it's comforting to know that at least for a while you don't have to worry about the car.

Hawk - Good luck on that run. You runner/biker folks amaze me.

I don't have a run today but will do a core workout later since I missed it on Wed. Slept 12 hours last night something I never do. Funny my legs feel fine but the rest of me is just kinda groggy/sleepy. Guess I needed the sleep and am appreciative of the rest before my long on Sunday.

Happy running all. Hope the heat breaks soon.

Re: Friday August 10
Dave - Wow, that's something...two IV bags? That's kind of scary to
know that you were that dehydrated. I guess there's not a lot you can
do, but I'm with everyone else--just be careful before you get back out
and do a whole lot. However, there were 30 other people? you said?
That sounds to me like it's not necessarily your body that is the
problem--rather the heat. In that case, there's not a lot you can do
except, when you have a choice, just be smart about when you
go outdoors. Take care of yourself.

Apple - Glad you got the car situation taken care of. I know that
feeling, buying cars you don't want to have to fork over the money
for. When we moved to Omaha in May my husband bought his
jeep, which at any other time would have been fine...it's just that
when we arrived we only had his income. It sucks to try to find
something affordable and find someone honest enough to give
you a good deal. Hope you enjoy your new car, even if it cost
you some money. Hey, at least you know it will run when you
get behind the wheel!

CMJ - That's very cool that you got to see Beckham play last
night, AND get beat! That's great. I'm looking forward to reading
how your spinning goes. I tried spinning once at my gym a while
back, but it wasn't for me. I just can't get into the biking thing...
don't know why. I might one day when my legs give out on me
and I don't have a choice!

Dan - I got in a good 9 hours of rest last night, so I know how
you feel. Lately I've only been sleeping about 5 hours or less
a night and it had started to take a toll on me.

I did manage to get to the gym last night for the predicted hour
on the elliptical, followed by my 8 mile run. Went something like
this:

Elliptical - 12.38 miles
Run - 8.21 miles, 65 minutes, 7:53 pace

Today I'm planning on the same thing.

This weekend I have a long run -- 22 miles. I haven't decided if
it will be tomorrow or Sunday. Doesn't matter which day I do it
because I'm kind of looking forward to it. This week, if all
continues to go as planned, I will PR on my weekly mileage.

Happy Friday, and Smart, but Fun Running to All!!

Re: Friday August 10
Dave - I know you're the man, but please consider cutting your day in half tomorrow....run half the distance you're planning, because of the heat, and just go back to normal Sunday or Monday....give your body an extra day to bounce on back w/o putting it through 20 miles in this awful weather....with ALL due respect, 18-20 miles tomorrow on the heels of passing out would not be smart.....this is serious heat, even for the deep south....

Apple - enjoy the new car....what the heck....my old Betsy Lexus is a 1992 with nearly 240,000 miles on it.....still runs like a top and looks pretty good, but after 15 years, I'm afraid retirement is coming up in the next few months....

Hawk - nice job on the bike....sorry you had to endure an entire game of soccer.....lord, the misery....i would prefer electric shock torture to having to watch that stuff.....you don't get the feeling i'm not a fan, do you?

Vash - 12 hours of sack time? Sweet. congratulations....maybe i can be so lucky tonight...

Tonya - Don't forget your cape on all of these runs....you're in some kind of shape!

Today was "interval" day....Did 2 WU miles @ 9:43 & 9:26, then one @ 7:57, half mile jog, one @ 8:06 and half mile jog/stagger/slobber/incoherent babbling/where am i? cooldown....then walked half mile home....forecast high here today is 105....yep, 105....77 when i ran and muggy but felt a tad cooler than wednesday....at any rate, run felt pretty good and i can feel some gain, small though it is....24.1 miles this week is a weekly PR....

Stay cool and safe all.....

Re: Friday August 10
good afternoon everyone,

Dave -- echoing what everyone else said... take it easy tomorrow!

Hawk -- good luck with the ride.. how did Beckahm play in the game yesterday?

Tonya -- great work with the double

EQ - great work on the speed work.. you must be enjoying the cooler temps around the area just as much as me!

As for myself. I did a 30 mile bike ride with my girlfriend this morning (avg 17.1 mph).. we thought it was going to be shortened by the rain, but were pleasantly surprised that we could get the whole thing in!... After the ride I went out for a 3 mile run (7:50 or so pace)..

I'm going to a wedding for a college friend in a few hours, then the rest of the weekend is wide open for me.. hope everyone has a good one!

Nice easy run in the blazing noon sun...wow can you feel it, then 8 striders on the football field.

5.9 miles.

Stay cool and be careful...especially you Dave! I've passed out because of the heat before and it is not cool.

Re: Friday August 10
OK, back from the spin session and refueling on lunch at my desk. I love working out at lunchtime but afterwards I feel like I could eat a horse. And I'm only 130 lbs!

One of the interesting things about these spin sessions is they seem to vary every week, yet you always seem to hit V02 Max at around 25-30 minutes. I like the instructor a lot, she's incredibly fit yet very patient and a good motivator, a real natural for the job. I can also say from yesterday's road biking workout that I've learned a lot through spin that will make me a better rider. Anyway, today was quite intense, with an emphasis on a high leg speed, then a couple long climbs late. I was drenched by the end of it.

Anyway, I'm ready to run long tomorrow. And like Tonya, I'm fired up for it.

BTW, Vas, I'm definitely still a novice cyclist. But I'm working on it.

And by popular demand (sorry brown) - the Becks report! As you probably know he's been battling a sprained ankle for nearly 2 months, one that he picked up playing for England in June and then aggravating in his final match with Real Madrid. All day long before the game the official gossip was he wouldn't play vs. United. But many of us were suspicious. For all Beckham's glam image, he is a great competitor with a tremendous amount of pride and an unbelievable work ethic. I've always been proud to count myself among his admirers. My gut yesterday said, "he's playing." And sure enough, in the 78th minute, he did enter the match. DC United were sitting on a 1-0 lead and Becks immediately had an impact, even with LA a man down due to a red card earlier. Even though he's not fully fit yet, his long ball touch is still magical. He put at least 2 balls in threatening spots where the Galaxy could equalize, but DC United was equal to the test. As for the stadium atmosphere, it was absolutely electric. The buzz over Beckham was feverish, but our fans were awesome -- animated, passionate and into every touch -- we were DC United's 12th man last night, no doubt about it. Bottom line -- I've been to a lot of "big" matches in my life, including last year's World Cup in Germany. I'd say this experience for me was only exceeded by seeing USA vs. Italy in Kaiserslautern last year. It was THAT good.

Hey people.

My heart hasn't been in it this week, so I'm hoping I get my groove back soon. One mile on the treadmill during the baby's nap, and then she woke up, and then four miles pushing her in the jogger later in the afternoon (and for THAT she fell asleep).

meh.
