Dan and Tonya,
Thanks for asking about how I felt about the marathon.

I know that I am more fit than I have ever been prior to a marathon. I can run 40 mile weeks without thinking of it as being a big deal. I did a 50 mile week without even noticing! Well, my legs noticed, but they didn't fall off.

I may be about 5-10 pounds heavier than I was at my lightest for a marathon. Then again, I may be at or below. I don't have my records of weigh-ins. C'est la vie.
On the other hand, my long runs have really suffered. I'm willing to accept a certain level of pain and discomfort. Apparently, that level ends somewhere between 85-90 degrees. It's just not fun any more when it is that hot. Today was just a few degrees cooler than this weekend and I was able to pretty easily complete 9 miles with hills. This weekend, I could barely do 6 on the nice, flat canals..
My only saving grace here may be that I'm slow. 9 miles took me 1:48 this morning. Coach Daniels' doesn't recommend long runs of more than 2.5 hours. I've always wondered if he was right. I'm going to get my answer, at least in part.
I set up Air Force to be an assessment of my fitness and also a training run for Tucson. It will serve both purposes. I'm pretty sure the result I will get is: Great progress, but work on the long runs, kid.
And, in the cooling temperatures, I will.
So, I'm happy, excited, and nervous as can be. I'm really looking forward to the extracurriculars like seeing my in-laws (honestly, they're great!), the pasta dinner, the Museum of the Air Force, and spending some time with my wife and boys. The race is going to much cooler than Arizona, except for maybe my last hour.
My New Year's Resolution (don't laugh, fast people) was to break 5:30. My plan is to stick with the 5:00 pacer. If all goes well, I break 5:00. If not, I hope I can get 20 good ones and then figure out how to complete the last 10K (I've done this before. :P ).
Thanks for listening!
Billy
PS - Wrigley Field is a magical place! I've not been to Fenway, but you go in, and, at least as an erstwhile Cubs fan, you feel like there is just no way that they make them like this anymore. Go to modern stadium like Chase Field in Phoenix. Everything is commercialized, sanitized, made to get you to buy more stuff. Wrigley is about watching baseball and nothing else. Enjoy!
