USC recruiting an eighth grader!?

It seems that Ryan Boatwright is a pretty good basketball player seeing that USC head coach Tim Floyd to offer him a scholarship--despite the fact that he just finished eighth grade! Boatwright apparently loved the campus on a visit and has made a verbal commitment to the Trojans.

I know that the scholarship offer and verbal commitment mean nothing right now. But still... this is a bit ridiculous, right?

Wow. Brings back memories of when SI ran an article on a kid named Schea Cotton; 10th grader from CA. The next Jordan, of course. Ended up playing at one of the UC schools...did not get drafted into NBA.

Picture of Cotton dunking made him look like a real man among boys at that point. Tough part is then turning into a superman among men.

Why would that be weird? I was recruited when I was in middle school......by the detention proctor. Seriously, it's amazing how low college coaches are stooping to get a leg up in recruiting these days. I've even read articles about kids being tracked by scouts when they are still in elementary school. Pathetic.

Ah the next Jordan...how many have we gone through? Being from Ohio, we had a few that were supposed to be the next best basketball player. Anyone remember Esteban Weaver? Kenny Gregory? Exactly. Going from school boy prep star to the NBA ain't easy. Every young kid who has those aspirations should watch the documentary Hoop Dreams. Anything can happen from the time you're "discovered" until you graduate high school.

Basketball recruiting is out of control...we have recruiting services ranking the top 6th, 7th, and 8th graders!

That is crazy! Kids are getting recuited earlier and earlier now. I know there has been some talk in other sports about putting a rule in place so kids can't commit to schools before a given deadline. I definitely think something needs to be done though...it's getting a little ridiculous.
