Re: Sunday October 10
WOW WHAT A FINISH! ...

10:10am - Gharib injected a surge and opened five meters. In the home straight it looks like Gharib is going to get it, but Ivuti is clawing his way back. He draws alongside. Ghyarib and Ivuti are side by side in the home straight. Gharib is not beaten, though. He opens another stride. They're just 20m from the line. Ivuti is inching back alongside. Side by the side at the line it is almost impossible to separate them. At the line, it appears as though Ivuti may have it. He and Gharib are shoulder to shoulder at the line. Ivuti's appears to have it by the width of his vest. A stunning finish. We have to await the official result. Unofficial time is 2:11:11. Njenga is third (2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd). Defending champ, Cheruiyot (who had stomach cramps) is fourth.

What a women's finish. The women from Romania lost the race while celebrating down the finish line and the winner beat her at the finish in a full sprint. Unfortunate for the women from Romania. She had no idea that the other women was even there.

Re: Sunday October 10
Both finishes have been AMAZING!

It's wicked hot here though, 79 already and humid. I was at the start for a while, then rode my bike up to mile 5 where everyone was soaked!

The Romanian woman was amazing though (Pirtea). This is her first marathon ever...and she never looked back. The Ethiopian (Adere) sprinted the last few hundred meters, was far the the right of Pirtea, kind of a sneak attack...then BAM! She passes Pirtea, who was waving at people yelling for her. Honestly, that was amazing!

The men's finish was crazy too....it took them a few minutes to figure out who finished first!

Nirvana's timing hasn't been updated yet I didn't see him this morning either, but I looked for him!

As for me....riding to and from the marathon gave me 18 miles on my bike today.

GO NIRVY!!!

Re: Sunday October 10
I was pulled from the race by the medical staff at mile 15 due to heat exhaustion.

It was for the best as I don't even remember much after the 13.1 point. I saw a girl convulsing and in cardiac arrest in the med tent. It was bad.

Re: Sunday October 10
Cool real time updates. I'm sure Nirv is done by now though.

I got back from Army Ten Miler just a little while ago. I'll do a full race report in the next day or so but here's the short version.

Time 70:19, 638th male finisher. I was shooting for a sub-70 and got oh so close, averaging less than 7:03/mile. Even so I still PRed....by 2:23! I banked time early but lost the bubble in miles 6&7 as the heat and humidity really bore down on us. Finished strong though -- 6:51 final mile; only mile 2 (6:42) was faster.

boyerdavea - sorry you had such a tough day. You did the smart thing to dial it back late. There will be better days ahead I am sure. It was a pleasure meeting you and running together when we could.

Look forward to reading all the reports later, probably this evening.

Meanwhile, it's time to go get ready for soccer. Yep, we have a game at 2:30. I'm not supposed to be playing in this one, but the lineup looks a little thin so I just might have to take a run or two out there. Bottom line I am ready if necessary.

Re: Sunday October 10
WOW. Never saw that before. Last year or the year before there was a marathon that actually added an extra mile, but I haven't seen one that has closed the course early.

How early did it close? What did they do for the people already on the course intent on finishing?

The logistics must have been horrendous!

Chances, I have to say I am SO GLAD I TOLD YOU TO STAY HOME! (Not that it was my call, mind you - just glad that you did it).

I hope nobody is seriously hurt from today. Aside from egos, anyway, and even those should be intact after battling with this weather. There's no glory in death.

Hahaha....the extra mile race was the Lakeshore Marathon in the spring of 2005...I know because it was my first marathon. Funny thing was it was a BQ race...somehow. The weather that day was similar to today's weather, only with an earlier start time and a little less humidity.

As for the logistics for the early closure, I don't know....I can only imagine that some people were very close and were told they could not finish. I'm sure the trib will have more info soon.
