Not sure there is a run anywhere that can me more inspirational (at least for me) than the Army 10 Miler. This year's was no exception.
I didn't do this run in memory of any particular fallen soldier but there were many who did. Between the t-shirts of those running for others or the fallen and the many soldiers who have been wounded that were running, it was difficult not to shed a few tears during the run.
Great crowd support and it seemed very well run. Many thanks to the soldiers who manned the security points and water stations as well as the Army bands who played along the route. Only administrative comment is that although the 3 wave start seemed to help, there was very little discipline in keeping folks with similar pace together. This caused me to have to pass a great deal of runners and contend with the congestion in the second wave (where I should have been starting based on my target pace).
Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and although the start seemed comfortable, it quickly became very warm. Racetime temps were over 75F and humidity was high.
This was my first race with my HRM but I ignored the heart rate throughout. Interesting to look at if afterwards and I'll be curious to hear comments about what the data indicates about my fitness and race approach.
I started with the intent of running about an 8:30 pace and got caught up in the crowd and just went for it. Sort of what happened last year so I wasn't suprised. Early splits were over 8 and then I settled into a bit faster pace and was able to maintain it to the end. Very difficult over the last mile or so with the grade on the bridge. Here's my splits:
8:14, 154bpm (83% max)
8:09, 164bpm (89% max)
7:59, 168bpm (91% max)
7:42, 169bpm (91% max)
8:01, 170bpm (92% max)
7:49, 172bpm
7:50, 173bpm
8:06, 176bpm
7:37, 177bpm
7:59, 178bpm (96% max)
Based on the heart rate info, I have little doubt that I could not have maintained that pace much further. Heart rate increased steadily over the entire race.
No chip or gun time yet, Garmin pace 1:19:24. PR by more than 2 minutes

Edited to add - Chip time 1:20:45. A bit dissapointing as I was hoping to go under 1:20 but still a very good race for me.
