Black Monday 10.08.07

I can't even believe how messed up everything has been recently....it seems like everything is just piling on. First was Tonya's mother, then my friend's accident, then yesterday in Northern Wisconsin there was a massive shooting with 7 people dead, one being the gunman and all other them were so young, and also yesterday I found out my grandpa had a heart attack but I guess he is normal now. I'm just so scared as to what's going to happen next. I wish everything would just go back to normal...

Going to get in a 5 mile run or so later today. They are having regional cross country meets this week and I am going to watch some of the races at the local park. There will be races with 2 of the fastest runners in the state and it should be fun to watch.

Have a great day everyone and I hope today is a wonderful day for running.

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Good morning all -

Still can't believe all that went on yesterday. Even this morning, Today Show was reporting on Chicago. The heat we are having is bizzare. Today we are having a high if 85 !!

Nirvy, not too long ago I read your blog and your reports from first race and Jamaica. I really appreciated them, however now you have a story to top those reports. I am glad to hear you are ok and resisted the drive to finish. Still can't believe someone died.

Hawk, you got the juice!!! Wow soccer game after race.

Dave - sounded like another rough race

Mom - love McDonald's fries. Cool you didn't do drive thru and had the fun of stinking people out.

Chance and everyone else, looking forward to reading full reports. It will motivate me for this Sat 5k

Alex- I hear what you are saying. It is important to remember that these events in our lives impact who we are and make us realize how precious life is. We are stronger and better because of what we go thru. We don't have all the answers as to why God allows things to happen, however think of all the mercy & blessing He does give.

Alex--sorry, but welcome to reality. Sometimes life sucks. What I'm going through with my mom and grandparents isn't fun. But, it's life. Ya gotta make the best out of the cards you are dealt...

I can't believe the Chicago stories! I had several friends that did it. Still waiting to be sure they are okay! Remember last year, the winner slipped at the finish? Chicago is certainly NOT on my list of things to do in this lifetime!

I felt great yesterday. Overnight, my legs tightened up. I begged my coach to let me do a workout this morning. He relented, and allowed me a 30min ride. So, this morning I was on the road to nowhere. I have the trainer set up in the garage now. I was able to open the door and at watch people heading to work. Better then looking at a brick wall...

4boysmom - I hope your friends are ok.

As for never running Chicago, last year was unfortunate that the winner slipped. The vinyl was stupid & they've learned...of course, the individuals holding the finish line this year didn't make much sense either...but whatever.

As for this year, they did what they could...having 90 degree heat indexes in October at 11:00am is not normal! I'm very sad that someone lost their life yesterday...and 3 people are still in critical condition...but it's an unfortunate risk.

I'm worried that Chicago is going to get a bad rep now because of this...but you know, there is no greater support system then this city...I really don't know what other marathon you can run that has 1.5 million people cheering you on. I mean, random people were pouring water, opening up hoses, giving out ice chips...the people who cheer you on are the best reason to run Chicago.

Anyway...sorry, I just get upset when people focus on the negaives of this race when there are just so many positves!

I do agree that the size needs to be brough back down to 35,000 vs. 45,000...even though only 35,000 showed up yesterday to run.

Alex I'm sorry that things are negative for you right now, but as 4boysmom said, it's a part of life. It's unfortunate, but these things happen. Just be happy that you have people in your life who are there for you and can listen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok me....I think I'm going to try and get a lunch run in, though my allergies are driving me bonkers today!

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Life--yep. That's how it goes. sigh

Well, I'm going back to the big city today.

At 3:00 pm I'm boarding a plane back to Omaha, leaving my
dad with the 3 bedroom house that my sister, brother, and I
grew up in.

Not to worry, though. My dad and I cleaned a LOT of my mom's
things out last night--all her medicine and medical stuff from
the last 9 years--and he was all right doing that, so I think he'll be ok.

Plus, I already have a flight to come back the weekend of October
26th to help with anything else that needs to be done. (Plus there's
a 5K that weekend in Amarillo )

Alas, no workout for me today. Thought it might be a good idea
after the last week I had--on top of running 63.7 miles, with a 12
miler last Wednesday and a 17+ miler yesterday.

Everyone have a great workout/rest today!!

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Yeah Alex, things have been pretty crazy lately. I almost feel bad that the first thing I thought when I heard about Chicago was "I hope I don't have to deal with that in a few weeks."

kfuller- enjoy the run, and watching some good CC races. That's always a good time.

Hope everyone can hold out for a few days until we get the forecased reasonable weather.

As for me, I feel pretty rested since I kind of took the race yesterday as an intense speed workout rather than an all-out race. I'll stick with the scheduled 1 mile recovery day though cause I don't want to take any chances.
I am a little excited because my wife mentioned an interest in trying to ease into running a little bit and actually enter a few races. She had been VERY resistant any time I brought it up before, so I just let it go.
I'm thinking her sudden change has to be caused by one or more of the following three things:
1. She wants me to chip in on an elliptical machine so she can train. And she knows how much I'd like for her to be out there with me.
2. The race yesterday, and the Air Force half a few weeks ago were the first ones she came to and watched I think, so maybe she caught the bug there a little. (Although with the heat yesterday, I'm sure it couldn't have looked like I was having much fun. Even when I'm not killing myself in a race, I don't look very pleasant. I'd post the pick from the Air Force, but I can't get it to work on my profile, and I'm not sure how to direct post them here.)
3. She just wants the T-Shirts. She did walk one race that I went to last year because the shirts had a big Mastadon on them...

Whatever the reason, I'm all for it.

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
All i can say this morning is wow....it takes a lot to surprise me but cancelling a marathon qualifies....I was in JAX, Florida over the weekend with my wife's family and could not post, but i could access the board and see what was going on, to some extent....i went to the update feature on Chicago, saw Nirv's times but then noticed the updates had stopped and concluded that he was forced to drop out....sorry to see i was right....didn't realize the extent of the catastrophe until this morning....but who would ever expect heat like that closing on mid-october in the Windy City?
Proud of your determined effort, Nirv, but also glad to hear you were pulled from the course and are okay....certainly that's what matters....a job well done regardless....

Dave - Sorry your race didn't turn out well either, but with your injury and this heat, the writing was on the wall....way to hang in there and persevere....proud of you too....

I ran in the Marine Corps 5k in Jacksonville Sat. morning instead of the race on the calendar. I was there for a memorial service later in the day for the pastor who married me 11 years ago....what a fine man he was, and talk about being proud of someone....if you want to read over nearly a year's worth of inspiration from a dying man, and a true man of God if there ever was one, go to jacksnell411.blogspot.com for a moving, inspiring experience....

As for my race, wonders of wonders, i was first in the 40-44 age group even with a painfully slow 26:34 chip time....thankfully the half-marathon pulled in most of the good runners, allowing me my "victory"....it started in the dark, in steady rain, 75 degree heat and nearly 100% humidity...i know, of course, that the conditions slowed me down a lot (huge crowd to fight through for over half a mile, the humidity, soaked clothes, ankle deep puddles everywhere!) but even had i been able to run in ideal conditions, 24 would've been a great day...

And get this....the race ended with about 100 meters or so across a muddy, water-logged field beside Alltel Stadium where the Jags play. Not exactly how you want to wrap up 3.1 steamy, foggy miles...

Adding to the excitement, i had locked my keys in the car before the race. So there i was, in the dark, 6:20 in the morning, surrounded by the miling masses, none of us exactly sure where to go, pouring rain at this point, a race to run and a memorial service to be ready to depart for by 9:30....nothing to do but find my number, find my chip, warm up a bit, run the race, borrow a cell phone, call my wife and have her bring me her key (surprise - she wasn't thrilled)...then she couldn't find me for 30 minutes, in spite of my "clever" plan to ensure success....all she said as the window rolled down was "don't ever do this again when we have something important to do!" and then she roared away, spray from the tires nailing me in the forehead....i could only grin (inwardly) and walk away, beginning the half mile hike back to the car.....

I'm only a hack at this stuff, obviously, but i sure as heck am enjoying myself, rain or shine...i only wish those of you with miserable days could've had better outcomes....i know it means a lot to you...

Alex - I hate these things you're experiencing....it will ease off and improve but keep your head up and soldier on as it really is a part of life that recurrs from time to time....

Sorry for the length, folks, but i wanted to give you all a nice feel for my racing foray this week, which i normally spare you all from....

Have a good day....

Thanks, brown.
There are a lot of sucky things in life, and a p!ssed off spouse is certainly one of them.

5.5 miles for me in a steady rainfall, 53 or so degrees. Today marks trhe second anniversary of my last marathon, run in Hartford, Conn., under remarkably similar conditions.

Good runs, all

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Hey all.

Still can't believe about yesterday. I am sure the family of the man who died can't either. I've run only one race in that kind of heat, and it was only a 10K.

Four miles for me today on the treadmill. The baby is napping and my son was supposedly occupied, though I surprised myself by sounding suspiciously like my father, except substitute "treadmill" for "car:" "If I have to stop this treadmill (car) and get off (out) you're going to be sorry (I'm going to be angry)."

First three miles at an easy 9-ish pace, and the last mile between 7:30 and 8:30. Even that faster pace felt easy to me, so I am looking forward to the 5 mile race next week to test myself. I'm wondering if I should be regularly training at a faster pace these days - have I improved by base level of conditioning recently? Only a race will tell me for sure.

Good ones, all.

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Rest day for me after yesterday. Meanwhile I am just taking in all the fall-out from Chicago and from Army Ten Miler which also had a fatality. Also reflecting on my own performance, which I think given the conditions was a good one. I didn't break 70 minutes but came really close...knock 15 degrees off the temperature and I would have gotten it for sure. I still got a PR for my efforts, and the confidence that the sub-70 is very much within reach (suddenly the Broad St. Run in Philly and Cherry Blossom in DC look like attractive potential targets for the spring).

I don't know what it is about a 10-miler but it's quickly becoming my favorite racing distance...I like the challenge of having to combine marathon-type endurance with track-type speed and it seems to suit me well.

Alex - hang in there. Life's events, good and bad, sometimes come in waves. You just have to ride it out and keep your head through it all. The sun will still come up tomorrow.

Brown - great race report. Hope the wife doesn't stay too mad at you.

Apple - luckily I only had to play about 10 minutes of the soccer game yesterday. That was about all the "juice" I had left after the race.

Tonya - have a safe trip back home today. Good call on taking the day off. You've been through a lot lately. Normalcy will return but gradually.

Mailbox - glad to hear the wife's getting interested. I go through the same thing with my wife. It doesn't come easily to her but I try to support her.

4boysmom - hope your friends are ok. And you're nothing if not dedicated. Do you ever take an off day?

Baba - nice run in the rain. That weather actually doesn't sound so bad right now!

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Thanks, Hawk....she was fine by the time i got back to her granddad's place....just anxious about being late to the service....she doesn't understand why i run and prefers that i not, but that seems to be a common theme for a lot of people....i love her just the same!

I didn't mention it earlier, but it seems like they did the right thing in Chicago, stopping that race....easily could've had a few more deaths and serious situations....haven't even run a HM yet, but it would seem combining extreme heat, a competitive spirit and 26.2 miles is a very dangerous thing....people know intellectually that they need to change their goals in conditions like that, drop their times by several minutes per mile, whatever, but most just can't do it.....

Re: Black Monday 10.08.07
Hi all,

Some great running out there today folks! Keep it up!

Today is a scheduled day off for me, which is good. The quads are still sore for some reason.

I've decided that this week, there will be no speed work heading into the marathon. There was one day this week I was supposed to do strides, but nope. The only up-tempo running i'll do this week is during the 7 mile run I have to do later this week. The plan calls for 2 of those 7 at marathon pace.

I hope you all have a great day.

By the way, I checked the long range forecast for Sunday. It's calling for a morning low of 42 and an afternoon high of 60. Partly to mostly sunny skies. If the winds are light, it sounds like I might have a perfect day to run a marathon. I'm still hoping to PR, but I'm taking nothing for granted given what happened at the Equinox.
