Steamtown Marathon report/any other racers?

Hello fellow Steamtown racers,

Just wondering how everybody fared in the race?

I didn't make my goal of 3:30, but did finish in 3:43 with a PR so I'm ok with it.

I know we didn't have the weather debacle as in Chicago, but we did have to deal with unseasonably high temps and humidity in Scranton. I can honestly say I didn't outwardly feel the effects of the weather. Perhaps the cloud cover helped keep that awful feeling of being beat up by the heat at bay. I did/do have tremendously sore quads and calves. I'm thinking mostly from the hills, but don't really know if it might also be the effects of the heat. I was cramping during the last 8 miles, but it was manageable.

My original goal of 3:30 was down graded to 3:36 when the weather forecast started creeping up. During the race, my legs were so beat up (I thought from the hills, now I'm not so sure), that I simply couldn't lift them like I wanted. I felt very good aerobic/cardio wise. I wanted to GO, but my legs were not cooperating. I down graded my goal again and thought I could pull off a sub 3:40, but just couldn't do it.

None of my friends/running buddies reached their goals in this race. They cited the heat as a huge factor. I would love to hear how others did.

Karen

Karen,

Even if i don't always follow my own mantra, ANY PR is awesome so way to go!

Yes, chicago will get the press for the heat but Scranton wasn't exactly cold!

Re: Steamtown Marathon report/any other racers?
I was there. Other than being a bit slower my race went about the same. I thought that I was in about 3:50 shape going in and ran a 3:58. I too pushed my goal back to sub 4 due to the heat. It was muggy but the cloud cover saved us. I had the same feeling as you, felt like I could go but the legs had other ideas. From what I understand the median time this year was about 10 minutes higher than past Steamtowns.

Funny thing was I was hurting bad from 20 to 23, but as soon as got over the hills on 24 I felt much better and was able to push a good pace to the finish. I passed alot of walkers the last 2 miles. I am thinking the hills gave my legs a break from all of the pounding they were taking.

This was my first marathon and I would have liked to run a few minutes quicker, but I am very pleased with the way I planned out and executed the race all things considered.

Jesse, I was hoping to see your report here. Looks like the warm weather stung everybody this weekend, hope it wasn't too bad.

I was there too. After running a 3:43 in the spring at the Pocono Marathon on a nice cool day, I figured I could run about a 3:48 here. Well, the humidity just beat me up and I ended up with 4 hours. I am quite a sweater and I lost a lot of fluid during the race despite drinking at every aid station. At mile 22 I slowed dramatically. I qualified for Boston at my spring race so will try again for a sub 3:40 there.

Dane, I started with your friend in the fairy costume. It was hilarious! You ran a great race. I agree with your blog that the course was far from an easy down hill course.
You ran a great race! Sunday presented so many challenges that I don't know ANYBODY who achieved exactly what they wanted.
