Around the Bay 30km race, Hamilton, Ontario

Hi,

anyone doing or has done the Around the Bay race in Hamilton? I need some advice regarding the training as the race happens around end of winter.

I have done a Half Marathon so max. distance I ran is 21km. Never trained/ran in winter condition so I would like to know how should I train for this. I know running on the treadmill just won't cut it.

Any word of advice? Thanks.

ATB 30K is the oldest roadrace in North America.

The weather can be anything in Ontario the last Sunday in March. Most often lately it has been damp and blustery.

The course goes counter-clockwise around the bay with the first approximately 18K being pretty much pancake flat until you reach the north end of the Burlington Beach strip at North Shore Blvd. It gets rolling and hilly real quick at that point for the next 9K.

Since it is 3 weeks before The Boston Marathon and has a somewhat similar pattern of where the hills are a lot of people use it as a last long training run for Boston.

I'd suggest getting used to running in the wind and deciding how much you need on to keep you comfortable.

Training for hills would be a good plan too.

I am a lot slower than many who post here, but I've run ATB four times. The weather is the issue first and foremost. It can be warm or frigid, blustery, windy, you name it. Hard to prepare for, in that regard. Living in Buffalo, I assume it will be cold, etc, and wear items that can be added/removed.

It is a sweet distance and course, very well supported by the city and community. I love and respect this race very much. As for the hills, they are in the last third. Train for hills, period. Get ample long runs in. You will them have a great race and enjoy it!
Hope to "see" you there!
