Honestly how hard is it to get into NYC Marathon

Honestly, how hard is it to get into the NYC Marathon?  This is a goal of mine for 08.
Thanks

There are qualifying times (see their web site -- about on the same level as BQ) that automatically get you in. As for the lottery, I think you have about a one in three or four chance of getting in. I say that because if you get turned down three years in a row, I think they give you automatic entry the fourth year.

that's all correct - if you're fast enough you can get a guaranteed entry based on a full or half marathon (within a certain time period)

I got shut out once, then got in through the lottery the following year (for the 2006 race)

one other way, if you are a member of the NYRR and you race a certain number of races during the year, you can get a guaranteed entry that way as well

Quali times for NYCM are a bit faster than Boston.

The 1/2 Marathon standard is a lot easier to achieve in my opinion then the qualifying Marathon time.

Completely agree.

As for getting without qualifying, it can be a daunting task. Even running 52 marathons last year and raising money for an organization that benefitted the mentally and physically handicapped, I was repeatedly told the only way in was to raise even MORE money for a separate charity.

Easier to put in the miles and just qualify.  You know, unless you are Lance.

I had my 3rd lottery refusal in a row this year...guaranteed entry for next year.  I can't wait!

Re: Honestly how hard is it to get into NYC Marathon

As for the lottery, I have a friend who says that while the lottery is supposedly random, it's only random for certain times.   Meaning:  They only take so many qualifiers from each time bracket.  You have to put down your expected qualifying time on the application.  They then put the people who are expected to qualify at the same together.  Then, randomly pick from there.

Makes sense to me. This prevents the race from having too many finishers in one time frame. Ideally, the RD would want the runners to be somewhat evenly spread throughout the course. My friend argues that if your time is on the slower end of the spectrum (say, 5 hours), you have a greater shot of getting in. Just a theory mind you.

does anyone know what the time you need for 1/2 marathon to qualify?

I tried checking the NYC Marathon site but it is all about the race on Sunday.

NYC does not give you the extra 59 seconds like Boston does.  Also note there is a specific time frame in which your qualifying race needs to be run.
