Why would anyone pay that for a race bib?

You also have better chances if you're a foreigner. I have dual citizenship and registered this year under my native country, and got in. if you check small countries with few runners, their acceptance rate is very high (because organizers want to pride themselves with as many countries as possible).

For NY Road Runners, the number of races you need to run to get an entry is 9.  Based on my friend's experience, not that tough given all the random 5k's and whatnot they put on.

Only ten minutes or so.  Very doable for all ages.

I think it is right after the deadline for the qualifiers, which I believe is May 1.

FWIW - I already have a NYC qualifier for 2008 from a half marathon - still working on a BQ

I'm not sure I agree that anyone who trains hard enough can get into NYC or Boston.
