Re: 11.3.07
I'm sick about the news on Ryan Shay....that's so sad. Amazing how someone can train like he obviously did for so long and then actually DIE running the race....
i was pulling for Ryan hall and Sell and glad they both made it....hall is something else.....
well, my 5k today didn't go too well, but i finished in ok shape at 25:28....this thing turned out to be one hill after another, including 2 very substantial hills....i went out too fast, for me, not expecting a long hill in the first mile, in a cemetery of all places, and was already sucking wind at the first split, time 7:36 (slow and easy for many of you)....the second death hill went on forever on the heels of 2 other smaller hills....i knew i was "toast" when i saw it looming up ahead.....second mile was down to 8:25 and third was 8:35....last tenth was :47 i think it was...a pathetic kick to the line was all i could muster, or really wanted to muster i guess....yep, not my day....
But like all of these races i do, i really enjoy them....it was cold this morning, around 40, but clear and beautiful....made it easier to see the headstones in the graveyard!
I was somewhat amused after it was over to see that my time would've won my old AG of one month ago, 35-39, by 3 MINUTES! As it is, i managed only seventh in the 40-44 AG...just my luck to end up with the speedsters after my 40th birthday! 39th OA out of several hundred....
Well, it's a sad day for runners....i always say a prayer that i'll be okay on these runs, much moreso for my kids and wife than anything....i don't know what you say to Shay's wife or family....nothing really you can say other than the usual canned stuff, much of which just sounds insensitive (never want to hear "he's in a better place" - alltime worst?)
Guys, you're inspiring on many levels....i appreciate you all and wish you all nothing but the very best as time goes on....thank you, be smart with your running and God bless....
Phil
