Re: 11.3.07
I caught the tail end of the trails. I'd picked Hall to place but was surprised how he smoked everyone - I thought it'd be much closer.

After that it was 11 miles for me at an average of 7:50 mpm. At the turnaround I thought about going longer, to make it 13, but decided to hold that thought until next weekend. Overall, I felt OK but not great. My split was even despite I almost getting run over a dump truck backing down the trail on the way back... strange day indeed

kfuller: good job with hardware.
brown82799: bummer about the 5k not panning out - still, a good hill workout. I found the 35-39 to be more competitive than 30-34 and hence AG awards are harder to come by... nice to know that 40-44 gets even harder!

Re: 11.3.07
Wow amazing trials this mornings...crazy about Shay...

I was a little skeptical about running today after my "reaction" the other day, so I decided to run on the treadmill, so I would be close to home.

I was scheduled for 6, but my breathing was still kind of wierd...I was not sure if I would be up to it. I took of and after about 3 miles I got that good feeling and knew I would make it 6...But instead I took a page from Tonya's book and threw the plans out the window and ran 7.

So 7 miles (10:26/m)...PR for time and distance...Great run.

Have a good weekend everyone and I have been sworn to secrecy about any Turkey Trot that may or may not have happened in Omaha this morning, so you will have to wait for a report...if it did in fact happen, or maybe not...we'll see.

Re: 11.3.07
T & P - Isn't it early for a Turkey Trot? Glad it was fun!
Alex - I was thinking it was a homecoming dance or something.

I can't believe about Shay, that's terrible!

Well, a happy note...I ran 10 today...haven't run double digits since August I think. Makes me happy since I plan on running the Derry 16 in January so I should be ready for it

Remember to turn the clocks back tonight.

Oh and lastly, I found this website today that already had 90% of my races saved on there. Maybe I'm totally behind the times but found it interesting...freaky at first but then thought it was cool!

Re: 11.3.07
Hey ya?ll,

Alex- you had me baffled earlier, I thought all this time you meant the trials! Glad you?re looking forward.
Nirvana- I hope the rest helps.
Everyone else- Nice workouts today!
Good luck to all you racers today and tomorrow! Hope today?s racers did well!

I was able to watch the men?s Olympic marathon trials this morning after a lot of patience getting the feed to load. I had to refresh a bunch of times after getting error messages.Hall ran an awesome race, I didn?t expect him to do that good, just expected him to be in the top 3. Really sad about Shay, though. 4 miles for me today?.around a 9:30/mile average. Having some pain in my left achilles and on the front of my lower left shin. I?ll do some extra stretching tonight. Goin to the men?s last home soccer game of the season against NC State. GO TECH!

Re: 11.3.07
Six miles today in the steady rain. Windy, too, and quite cool (41) compared to what we've had in these parts.
The first mile I thought this was going to be another slog, but things seemed to pick up. So it's a start.

That is terrible news about Brian Shay. Guy was just married in July, too. Somebody mentioned that there seems to be more tragedy in running than there used to be... that is because there are so many more marathon runners than there used to be.

Keep the faith. Stuff happens, sometrimes.

Good runs, all

Re: 11.3.07
The Turkey Trot I ran in this morning was an out and back--out from
an activity center, through a school parking lot, through a neighborhood,
and then back again. We arrived 30 minutes early or so, and I got my
bib and race packet. It was a cold 30 degrees, but nice, clear, and
sunny. Perfect for a morning run.

I was looking around and my eye caught a guy from Team Nebraska.
I'm not sure, but I think he was the only one from the team that was
participating. He won, of course. Some absurd time of 15:32, or
thereabouts.

It wasn't anything different than a normal 5k. Before the race I had
been inside the building, and my garmin didn't have a signal. I didn't
know this, however, because when the gun went off, I pushed it to
start it, but when I looked at it the next time, it was only calculating
my time. So for the entire race, I really didn't know what pace I was running.

The course went through a sharp uphill, then flat for about .25, then
a sharp downhill for .25 or so. It was less than encouraging
because I knew I was going to be coming back up that hill...

The second mile was nice and flat, through a neighborhood. Around
1.25 I saw the Team Nebraska guy passing back by me.

Ridiculous.

Around Mile 2, I caught up with a couple of guys and passed them
with ease. One of the guys said, "Let's try to keep up with her."
As I ran back up that huge hill I told you about, they caught up with
me and passed me, but I quickly passed them once we were
back on level ground. As I started to pass them, one of the guys
had to stop--to throw up. At first the other guy kept running, but then
I guess he decided better of it, turned around, and went back to help
his friend.

From the time I started the race until the end, I hauled a$$ (as much
as I could). I say as much as I could because my legs were still
sore from the nearly 19 miles I ran Thursday, plus the 8+ I ran
yesterday. I can only IMAGINE what my time would have been
had I not been so sore. Maybe next time I'll actually think about that,
seeing as how I've done that twice now--run 16+ miles a day or two
before the 5k. I'm an idiot sometimes.

As I ran the downhill back to the finish line, I heard people clapping,
Phillip yelling, "GO TONYA!" and just general cheers. Then I heard
the guy say my time, counting it down as I approached the finish
line--18:48, 18:50, 18:52--time!

PR - 18:52, and I made my goal.

Right before the race I had told Phillip I would like to try to run
6:00 miles, or just PR. Looks like I did it! I'm so excited!
I won a gift certificate for $100 to a local nursery, so flowers
or trees, I guess, here I come (most likely a re-gift ). I also
won a gift certificate towards a Road ID, a gift card to a local
grocery store, and a medal, which is super cool (has a turkey
on it).

Overall a great race. I would suggest it to anyone in the area,
as it was EXTREMELY well put on. Nicely done for only a second
year event.

Congrats Tonya - One of these days you will have to pick a key race and taper a couple of days to it.

Continued slow running - 6 very nice miles.

Was up early - Took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to get the live stream of the trials - but it was awesome. After 1st 2 miles painfully slow (@ 11 minutes) @ mile # 4 they picked it up - Hall was a beast.

Good running to all -

Tonya-- Congratulations! I got a turkey medal last year at a turkey trot and yes they are cool. I once ran the same time you ran today and I only dream that one day I can do it again. Great job on the race.

Re: 11.3.07
Another busy Saturday so just checking in with a quick late night post.

I accompanied my wife to her soccer match this morning and while she was playing I decided to strike out on the nearby roads for a short run of 5-6 miles. It turns out there was a great trail network less than a mile away so I got some trail running in! It was at Seneca Park in Montgomery County, MD, if that means anything to anyone. Trail was a good bit more challenging that Bull Run in Manassas which is basically flat all the way. All told I did about 5.2 miles, at 8:23/mile pace.

Later on after we got back home it was out the door for more treadmill shopping. So there was another mile or so of running that went unrecorded in my log. BTW, I think we're getting close to deciding on a purchase. Basically it's down to 3 models, one each from Landice, Precor and Nordic Track.

Horrible news about Shay.

Great job today by Hall, and of course, all the racers here.

That's all for now. Good night everyone.

This may sound strange, but I hope he vomited from pushing himself too hard rather than a stomach illness. If so, then wow. That's authoritatively grinding the competition down. Anazing.

I did 10 miles today. I got to run with...the 3 Day Walkers. We have a really nice greenbelt system here in Scottsdale and that's where they were. It was nice to have some more people on the route. Anyway, very nice group of (almost entirely) ladies as you might expect. It was a little warm. I'm gonna try to run in the morning instead of the afternoon tomorrow.

Cheers,
Billy

Re: 11.3.07
Ran an 8K cross country race at Van Cortlandt on Saturday. I had run the same event the last couple of years in 37:30 and 37:20. Looking at some of my recent performances, I thought that a strong effort could get my under 37 minutes.

The race was primarily for young, fast guys of college and just past college age, so as we started out, I looked around and noticed that the whole field was in front of me, with just a few stragglers bringing up the rear. I settled into a comfortably quick pace, knowing that the relentless back hills awaited me on the first 5K loop, and then I had the dreaded, incredibly steep cemetary hill to deal with on the second loop.

Despite my being well back of the main pack, I went through the first mile in 6:35, the same split I had run in a 5K race a couple of weeks earlier on the same course. As I headed into the hills, I struggled to find the balance of pushing hard enough, but keeping something in reserve for the second loop. A young runner just behind me kept me working hard as we negotiatied the roller coaster back hills.

The 5K mark was at the same point as the finish, and I went through in 22:10, only about 20 seconds slower than my recent 5K. On the flats I could see no one in front of me, but as I glanced back, I noticed a half dozen or so runners just behind. Not wanting to yield my position, I continued to press the pace. As I made the switchback turn toward cemetary, I caught a glimpse of a guy just behind me who had beaten me in the race a couple of weeks earlier. I thought, "****, I went too hard early, and now he's going to catch me again. Maybe I'll just wish him well and let him go by my on that damned hill." Honestly, I really thought that.

Instead, I found a reserve of energy, and pushed hard up the hill. A few cheering young ladies at the midway point seemed to give me a lift. As I crested, I thought that if I could put in a surge around the turn, I could get out of sight and discourage my opponent. I got rolling on the downhill and got to a half mile to go in 32:30. A quick calculation told me that I had a good chance to get into the low 36's.

As we hit the flat, I felt my rival just behind me. I continued to push, hoping I could hold him off. With 400 to go, I pumped my arms, lifted my stride, and pressed for the finish. I crossed the line in 35:50, a full minute and a half better than my previous efforts. Not many runners finished behind me, but I was happy with my effort.
