MRI Negative

I've been having extreme burning, pins and needles down both my legs and glueteus maximus. I also have weakness in both my leg muscles. I get involuntary muscle twitches in my thighs and my calves. I had an MRI which came back negative for pinched nerves. My doctor didn't like my muscle reflexes, when the muscle was supposed to stop, it kept jerking, this is why the MRI was done, however they didn't find anything? This has been going on for 3 years now, and since the first year has progressivley gotten worse. This started after an accident. Is there anyone out there that has had these problems, might shed some light. I'm only 22!, and walking is an effort. I also wake up at night because it feels like my lower body is being shocked!

Re: MRI Negative
Was this a lumbar MRI that was negative? If it was a lumbar and you have brisk reflexes that continue as well as altered walking you my have a cervical myelopathy (the spinal cord in the cervical spine is "being pinched"). Are you seeing a neurologist or spine surgeon? If not request a consult!

Re: MRI Negative
you may want to discuss an EMG (nerve conduction study) with your doctor(s) if you are having what in doctorspeak they call progressive neurological symptoms. in plainspeak it sounds like you have some nerve disorder and it's getting worse. if you haven't seen a neurologist (a doc who specializes in nerve disorders) you need to.
for your own records, document clearly exactly what your symptoms are, what muscle groups are affected (gluts, quads, hamstrings, calves, feet, for instance) whether you have any loss of sensation/feeling, and the history of your symptoms (pain has gotten worse, more intense, more frequent, weakness has gotten to teh point that you can't do xyz, twitches didn't start till x no months ago). also if you feel you have weakness you may want to measure your legs (calves, for instance) over time, to watch for atrophy (muscle wasting). the more information you have the more likely you will get the attention and workup you need.
good luck.
