Does anyone else use a weight vest during training?

If so... what weight and brand, and why?

Not a good idea unless you want to destroy your knees.

If you want to get stronger, run uphill. Easier on knees AND wallet.

Re: Does anyone else use a weight vest during training?
I don't wear a weight vest (and never would), but a full hydration bladder pack provides extra weight and it's useful on long runs - fluids, electrolytes, food, extra gear = specificity. (no, I don't do this for any particular training benefits, but our races typically don't have aid stations, so we need to bring our own stuff)

If you're looking for speed or strength workouts, just run hills, like Andy suggested. Again, specificity.

The risk of injury will definitely outweigh the benefits (if any). Hill work would definitely be more beneficial.

Your muscles and connective tissues are prepared to support your body weight and weight distribution. They are not ready to support additional weight in random places. It will catch up with you. Definitely stick to hill work.

Re: Does anyone else use a weight vest during training?
I do have a weighted vest, I introduced it on runs very gradually, 1lb of weight, as i lost weight i put half of that lost weight into the vest.... i.e. I lost 20lb of weight, but put 10lb back in the vest.

Now I didn't notice it going in there at the time, and when i took it off oh my my running felt super quick...

Mind you, will I do it again? (i only did that for about 2 months), probably not, it did make me slow down mind you as I couldnt made the pace, but being concerned over my knees etc I have opted out...

For hill repeats I might, and i say might wear a mild amount of weight to add that little extra, but shall see...

Would i recommened it to anyone, probably not, its something I am aware of the possible dangers and it just for me adds a bit of variety. from the articles ive read about using them, they only suggest using them on shorter runs, upto 3-4miles at most.

One thing i did notice after using one mind you, was my push off was sharper, but then its just like running uphill all the time, so its not going to do wonders for your speed, just increase your strenght (yes i know that sounds a bit controdictory :S)

If you have to blow money on frivolous stuff, get the parachute thingies to challenge your running. The object is to get less weight off your skeletal system, not more.

I saw an idiot the other day with ankle weights with a painful look on his face. A few years ago I messed up my right knee for a couple of weeks on a Marine Mud Run race. Not worth it!

What is the difference between a weight vest and hydration pack/backpack?

A hydration pack weighs a pound or two. A weight vest would weigh much more. But even given that weight discrepancy, I won't wear a hydration pack either.

I run in scuba gear, but only with one tank.
