The Next Generation of Active Youth

It's great to see so many people interested in being physically active and getting outdoors. But I worry that the next generation of kids won't be the same way. What can we do about this? So many kids don't even have a playground or sports field within walking distance of their home. I'd love to see everybody who cares about this issue take on the project of volunteering to fix that problem. It's easy to build a playground or renovate a playing field in your hometown if you get enough people together. Anybody interested?

It's a sad fact that children from wealthier families are more likely to have access to places to exercise.
I see an awful lot of kids, though, who go to really nice parks and just sit there playing video games. Children need to be taught how wonderful exercise can make you feel-they don't really understand or care that they may get heart disease at the age of 40 if they don't exercise.
The real key is teaching kids how to do the kinds of exercise they will do as adults, but if the adults around them don't care about exercise and keeping fit I doubt whether the kids will develop much interest in it.

Have you seen the Wii video games? (pronounced wee).

You hook it up to your tv, and then choose a sport - golf, tennis, bowling, boxing, and baseball. You then choose an image, a little person in the video to represent you. By holding the controller in your hand, the tv image - you- will do the exact movements as you do in real life.

Picture yourself boxing. You have to dodge and punch and move around. It's quite a work out. On top of it, every so often, a streamer goes across the screen saying, isn't it time for you to go outside and play?

You can really work up a sweat playing those games, as well as wrench your shoulder from tennis and baseball. One downfall - the controllers have been known to slip from the players hands and kablooey through the tv screen. Then it really is time to go out and play.

Is that what that does? I never knew. How neat.

I swear, it's the most clever compromise you could dream of. When my boys and their friends hook up the Wii, I have to crank up my air conditioning and turn on fans because they sweat so much. They are doing some cardio!

helen82, the technology behind this is mind boggling. It's wireless. You have complete freedom to use the hand-held controller. So you can move around the room as if you had a tennis racket or to put a top spin on your bowling ball. The big question is, what's next???? Maybe a Wii that delivers hot dogs and beer during a baseball game?
