For me, a "long run" is more than 15-16 miles or so. That's the point where I start taking care to really prepare for the run by thinking about what I eat the night before, how much water I drink the day before, etc.
<HR>

I agree with 15m as the beginnnig point for "long" runs when I'm building up for a marathon. Over the winter/off-season, i like to try to get in a weekly run of at least 10m (double-digits) to stay within reach of that longer-run stimulus.

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
"They" think, anything over 30 mins is long...

"I" think, 90 mins is the minimum "long run"...that's what I run as a maintence long run when I am not training for anything in particular-which is rare.....

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
It's amazing how my own idea of a long run has changed as I have progressed in my distances. When I first started running, 5 or 6 miles was a long run. Now, 10 miles seems like a not-so-bad distance. Long runs for me right now are 13+. The non-runners around me are in awe when I say I'm going for a quick 3, 4 or 5 mile run.

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
The public, as in non-runners? I would agree with 30 minutes as the minimum cut-off for a long run. As health guidelines dictate that 30 minutes of exercise is enough, I'm sure a layperson would think more is "long."

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
I am with runninirish-most of the non-runners I work with think anything over 30 minutes is long (long enough anyways).

And I consider minimum of 90 minutes to be a long run.

and one who does 25- 50 miles several days a week.

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
Again, I agree it's especially subjective, and depends on where one is in their training. Me, I'm training for my first half-marathon. For me right now, a short run is anything under 4 miles and a long run is anything over 6 miles. Hopefully though sometime soon I will consider anything under 10 miles a piece of cake . . .or so I hope . . . we'll see, I'll keep you updated . . .

My acquaintances (including my own siblings):
1 hour of running = are you nuts?
1 hour of spin class or biking or hiking or insert sport = fitness, good for you!

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
2 weeks ago I told a few colleagues of mine that I did a 15k long run. One of them said, "f*******k you're mad!" This comes from a a guy who cycles 10 times that much in a "long ride". Some guys here do my long run as their morning run and run what I did so far this year (about 240 miles) in 2 to 3 weeks. My response to those guys, "f********k you're mad!"

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
came back from an easy 5 mile recovery run last Sunday evening and my neighbor asked how far I had gone. When I told him he said "Ouch, that hurts just to think about". I didn't tell him I had done a 17 miler the day before.

I consider anything over 10 miles a long run. When I'm not marathon training my longest is usually 10 and I call it a "long run"

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
My co-workers think that anything over 3 miles is a long run. Some of them think that changing into running clothes is a workout in and of itself. A long run for me is anything over 8 miles. The longest I've ever run is 13.1, though. But that number will be growing in a few short weeks!

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
I'm not really sure about the general public, but I've noticed that saying I ran anything over about 4 miles usually gets a "wow, that's a long way!"

For me, a long run is >90 minutes. Of course, during marathon training my long runs are a lot longer!

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
Right now, a long run for me is >20km (around 2h), basically the time/distance that will make my wife complain for being gone for so long.

Re: What do you think the public considers a "Long Run"
Before I started running I wouldn't think that any average Joe could even run a full mile. just based on what it felt like for me to run 20 feet it didn't seem humane. I think I became interested in running when I learned what average people can accomplish. When you think about it is pretty amazing that I, an average Joe, can awake at 2:30 in the morning- run 15 miles and still punch the time clock before 6:00 AM. I wouldn't even bother to tell my co workers because they wouldn't buy it anyway.

Most non runners in socity probebly consider running anything over 3 miles long. I don't bother discussing it anymore because I'm so sick of the "running is bad for your knees speach".
