Running Core?

Does having good core muscles (abs and back) really make you a better runner?

How and Why?

Re: Running Core?
For me, strenthening my core has made a significant difference in my running. I always had weak ab and back muscles and towards the end of longer runs my upper body would get tired and sore. As I started to use my core more and strengthen it through pilates I really could feel it in my long runs. I developed better form as well. I believe however that it is better to be well rounded in strength. I have never "only ran" I love biking and strength training and so I am a big believer in cross training. Your core muscles support your entire body and when you have stronger core muscles you take some strain off of other muscles that are forced to pick up the slack.

Re: Running Core?
Core strength and balance exercises allow you to maintain form while running. You can also drive you arms harder. Such exercises should complement your other training activities. It translates into better running performance. Try it, you'll notice a difference.

Note that you don't have to go to a pilates class but guidance from a personal trainer will help to get the ball rolling. Of course, there are a bunch of DVDs on the subject.

Remember, the stability and bosu ball are your friend...

having stronger, more toned muscles in the core and upper body also help your body process and use oxygen more efficiently.
