Duct Tape & Jackrabbit Sports store

How many of you use duct tape on your feet to prevent blisters? Does it work?

Has anyone ever been to Jackrabbit Sports Store in NYC? If you have what was your experience there? Did they fit you correctly with running shoes? I am yet to find the right pair of shoes and I am thinking of trying that store.
Thanks!!

Hi!

I work at JackRabbit. Come check us out. We think we're great, but then of course we would.

The nice thing is that with the video analysis, you get to see for yourself what you look like running. Although our staff are well trained to advise you, at the end of the day you you'll be making your own decision about what direction to take with your shoe choice. One piece of advice: it tends to get really busy on Saturdays and during the week in that key 5:30-8 time, so if you can make it down during the day, or Sunday, it will be a little more calm. (Sundays are kind of "spurty" and hard to predict).

And if you can bring your old shoes, that's often helpful.

As for duct tape. Ouch. A better fitting pair of shoes, maybe different socks; I'd go there before taping down my feet.

Well, I don't work there,.... I did not even stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but I have shopped there.

I was not purchasing footware but there were others there who were and the process was very similar to what I have done when I go to my local store in West Hartford, CT. They even had cyclists on frames trying out stuff so it would say to give them a try.

to jackrbt geek - you can send the endorsement check to...... (haha)

I use 2" cloth tape. I have blister prone areas. Sometimes I tape before a long run. Other times I have to tape as a blister is healing. I did get orthotics and since I've been using them I haven't gotten any really bad blisters.

I went to Jackrabbit (on 14th Street) when they were having a spring sale - bought a very nice pair of gloves for 20% off.

Anyway, I used to tape my feet all the time, but I haven?t since I started getting shoes that fit and double-weight Wright socks. Regarding duct tape, it seems a bit crazy to put duct tape on skin that you might be pulling off along with the tape, but, I suppose that if it works for you ...

I've used duct tape for hiking boots, right on the heel. Helped, but didn't prevent blisters. Removing the tape with blisters didn't hurt too much, but I think I'm lacking nerve endings from so many blisters over the years. Lube works, maybe lube the blister spot, then tape. Lube has prevented blisters from my running shoes.

I've used duct tape for hand blisters... digging post holes for a two mile fence with absolutely no other alternative. It stopped the bleeding and made finishing more comfortable. As to removing the duct tape... everything else on my body hurt more so I didn't notice.

Yeah post hole digging as cross training. Maybe I'll write a book, "Cross Training for the Craftsman". Splitting wood, kneading bread, roofing...

Any buyers?

Re: Duct Tape & Jackrabbit Sports store
Well, when it comes to hiking, duct tape is your best buddy to prevent blisters IMHO. I used to do some primitive camping/canyon hiking in UT and we would practically wrap each entire foot every morning before double socks and hiking boots and it really worked a treat.

When it comes to running, I've only had one blister incident (lucky, I know, but I haven't been running quite a year yet). Right after the blister, I popped it and used antibiotic cream first and then bandaided it and put duct tape over the bandaid and that worked well. Then once it was healed I continued to lube the spot and duct tape for a few runs. So it can help. I would never apply tape over a blister without anything in-between though, but I think that's obvious.

HTHs!

jack rabbit is fantastic and the people who work there are great - one of whom is an author and world class endurance athlete (and all around great guy) and the owner is super helpful and caring about his customers.

Re: Duct Tape & Jackrabbit Sports store
Never been to jackrabbit but....

I almost always duct tape my feet. I found that I got blisters on my arches and other kinds of tape wouldn't last more than 3 miles before I sweated them off. I just wrap my arches in duct tape and I'm fine!! One day last week I didn't have any duct tape and ended up with huge blisters... bummer. I highly reccommend duct tape for blisters... although sometimes it hurts if you try to pull it off an existing blister.

If you want a real guru of running shoes, I highly recommend this guy named Keith at Super Runners Shop in Huntington, LI. I went to 2 podiatrists and Jack Rabbit in Brooklyn, and no one determined what was causing my constant injuries.

When I went to this guy in Huntington, he didn't even try to sell me a new pair. I was fully prepared to buy a new pair at the time. He told me why my sneaker wasn't working properly and gave me something to insert in my shoes to correct the problem...and it did!

The next time I came in, he fixed me up with my the pair I have been using injury free for well over a year.

This guy's an expert. I have absolutely nothing to gain by promoting this guy. Do yourself a favor.

Re: Duct Tape & Jackrabbit Sports store
Duct tape - ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!! In the beginning, I would get blisters across the balls of both feet. I tried different shoes, vaseline, bodyglide, second skin, powder, three different types of wicking socks(including double layer wright socks) - nothing even came close to helping....until I tried duct tape. That was three years ago - any time I plan over three miles, I put a strip across each foot, followed by sock and shoe. This has worked for distances which included marathons. Afterwards, I merely remove the tape - and no skin comes with it. It has been the only solution I found which worked for me.

Have a great day!
Vicki
