Racing in Early pregnancy-requesting experiences of others please

Anyone out there - either personally, or knows of someone- who had put in the miles and trained for a marathon only to find out that during the one month-out taper time she's pregnant? My marathon is August 19 - I'm a fast runner that has done over a dozen marathons. so I'm conditioned (resting HR is extremely low-38bpm) and had a great last few long runs up to a 22 miler and am completely done with the really long runs until race time.

I know people hate most of all to give any advice (besides "rest")to pregnant women, BUT... I'm active and I've been told by my doctor that if my body is already conditioned for it i could do it, but maybe should not for piece of mind. I'm just wanting to know what OTHER active women's experiences have been on this. Anyone?

I figure i'd be a little slower, as I ran 2 hours last weekend and had to slow it down a bit, which was a little annoying, but necessary. By the time of the race I will be about 7 weeks along. Maybe I should just do a half marathon...or give up the race to be safe. Everyone is different, but it would help to know others experiences...good and bad.. and i'll make up my own mind.

Always best to go with your docs advice. However When I was pregnant, my doctor told me to not allow my heart rate to exceed 130-140 bpm.

Again, Follow your doctors advise, but if you feel up to it give it a go. Give yourself permission to stop at anytime that it does not feel right to run, either walk or if you need to, stop the race there. Enjoy having a new running partner!! Speaking of which, do you have someone else (I was lucky enough to have my mom running a tri with me during my last pregnancy) that can help if you need it, just in case. Congratulations.

Not sure where you live or where your marathon is, but it is very important that your core body temperature not get too hot. At 6-7 weeks of pregnancy, your baby is very vulnerable to excess heat.

Re: Racing in Early pregnancy-requesting experiences of others please
I ran St. George Marathon and did not know i was pregnant...very early. I did fine and ran normal (i'm a slow runner)... I miscarried my second pregnancy at 12 weeks and I know it was not because of running, but it was the most awful thing and I won't do anything to put my baby at risk... I'm pregnant again (due dec 13th) and I just make sure that I'm able to run and talk at the same time during my runs, (slower but still long distances 6-7 milers several times a week the first part of my pregnancy) as it got hotter (live in arizona) my friend and I just listened to our bodies (my running partner is pregnant too... so nice for us to have support from each other).. We never did less than 3 or 4 but have not yet gotten over 5 because of the heat (i will do up to 6 on the treadmill inside if my 2 yr old daughter lets me). Now here is my oppinion. The first part of my pregnancy was easy and i did fine running the same long distances that I was doing before... I've only run 4 marathons and I don't think I'd do a whole marathon knowing I was pregnant ever agian, however I'd do a half but very very slowly...no walking but walkers might pass me.... Keep working out during your pregnancy and get good weekly mileage (we do 20-30 a week which I think is good) and your delivery and recovery will be easier... then find a good marathon to run after the baby... you'll only need 3 or 4 months to train and you will loose your baby weight so fast... Get a baby jogger brand jogger as well.. they are the best!!!
