Are you sporting an MP3?

Sorry if I don't get these gadget terms exactly right... but my buddy stated I must be the only runner who no longer has an ipod music thingy. After taking a look at other folks on the treadmill, I thought he might be right. I don't know that I'd call those folks "runners" though, and certainly not "competitive runners".

I thought I'd come to this forum to find out how many of you listen to music as you train. I don't, and rarely wish I did. Maybe for the treadmill sometimes, but I try to stay away from that as much as possible too. I'm wondering if there's any correlation between amount of music listened to during training, and competitive levels? Do any elites, or even sub-elites, listen to music for the majority of their training?

I never listen to music and I almost never run on a treadmill.

Re: Are you sporting an MP3?
No music while running for me. The only exception is when I run on the treadmill, which is very rare (as in maybe half a dozen times a year when the streets are covered with ice, severe thunderstorms, etc.).

I use the Ipod for long runs only (and the treadmill if I have to run on it). It's too distracting for tempo, intervals, etc. but a life saver on the 2 plus hour runs, especially in the winter when it's dark and cold and otherwise boring.

I listen to music sometimes, but not always. Sometimes when Im feeling pretty good I'll throw on my Nike mp3 player and just run a measured route and go by feel. When I do wear it I tend to run harder than I planned.

Re: Are you sporting an MP3?
If you want to run well, forget the earphones.

Years ago I read a fascinating article about the differences between competitive runners and the rest. The more successful runners were "associators" and the rest were "dissociators".

What this means in plain English is that the "associators" spent most of their runs monitoring how their bodies were feeling and making fine adjustments all the time. In contrast, the dissociators used all kinds of techniques to distract themselves from how they were feeling during their runs. They typically did not improve very much.

The "earphone set" are clearly dissociators. Unless you spend most of your training time learning how you are responding to the training, then you won't be able to do it in races. FOCUS!

Very interesting, I never thought of it that way. Thanks.

I sometimes listen to music while doing easy recovery runs, never while running hard workouts or racing. I don't think the study you mentioned (from Jim Fixx's book? I saw that a loooooooooong time ago!) accounted for the fact that not all runs are created equal in terms of intensity and the need for focus.

Never, although some days I wish I did -- longer, slower runs in the cold and dark, for example.

Well, that makes sense, although I still think that the safety aspect weighs against earphones at any time outdoors. I like to remain fully aware of my surroundings. If I am about to be attacked by a dog, for example, I want at least some warning.

Re: Are you sporting an MP3?
don't own one.

Since I run on my own treadmill, I play music for hard runs and if for some reason I'm running on the treadmill for easy runs or long runs I watch a dvd. Unfornuately, I started this bad habit when we moved to this house which has no windows in the basement. I used to run with no music, just watching the landscape through a window.

I read (on this board, I'm pretty sure) that one elite American runner listens to music a lot -- although he said he makes sure he doesn't all the time since he doesn't listen to music while racing. Don't know if I can find the link to it or not, though.

Edited to ask: what did you mean when you said you weren't sure the people running on the treadmills, listening to music, were really runners?

Dan Browne (2004 US Olympian at 10000m and marathon) has talked about sometimes running with music during his slower recovery type runs.

Re: Are you sporting an MP3?
I can't STAND listening to music, or anything else, while running. Whether it's distracting me from the running or all of the other things I manage to occupy my mind with during a run, I don't know. I lean towards hypothesis #2.

I'm in trouble when we start having kids and some runs must be relegated to the treadmill. I can't seem to occupy my mind the same way there, yet both music and TV seem very distracting. Maybe the wailing baby will become a good substitute?
