consecutive training years, how many for you?

I've never even had one ... I ran in-season and sporadically in school ... and a knee injury followed by a broken foot split my current 2 years running up ... so I'm a newbie runner in all reality ...

At what year (training year) and age are/were you at when you performed your best in races? For older runners, at what point (if any) did you feel your training efforts became more maintaining your performance than improving it?

thanks ..........

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
I joined a track club at age 11 and trained consistently until I was about 22 with most of my PBs coming at age 20-21. I ran sporadically for a couple of years after university and then quit running altogether at 25 and didn't run again until I was 32. Now I'm 37 and have been running again for 5 years, but didn't take it very seriously until about a year and a half ago. I can still get PBs in the marathon or HM, maybe even break my 10k time from university, since I trained for the 800 and 1500 back in those days, but I doubt I'll see any lifetime PBs at anything shorter than that.

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
I ran off and on prior to the age of 30. Ran 4:37 mile as a high school freshman. After high school, while in college I ran one 5k(17:56) and didn't run another race until the age of 30 in 2000. Since then.............

Primarily a marathon runner, I have dabbled at various distances.

Marathon: Caught this bug at the age of 30 and haven't stopped since. Running as many as six a year. More than anything this is the distance I love. In my seven year now, I keep learning more.
1st: (4:19 / 2000) I remember saying right after "never again"
(PR 2:54:22 / 2005 Chicago Marathon)

I suppose I elaborated a little , but it has been a journey!

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
Ran in high school and college back in the 80's and stopped for 13 years except for the necessary yearly Army PT test (I was a reservist). Started running consistently in 2003 and PR'd at pretty much every distance from 10k on up in 2005 when I started training seriously. Going for another marathon PR this year at age 37. All the best to you!

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
I started running about 27 ½ years ago when I was 32. Although I never stopped running altogether, there have been several periods where I didn?t run many miles. Almost all of my PR?s came at age 43. By the age of 45 I was not improving any more and my mileage also started to tail off considerably around then. Still I could run in 36?s for 10k when I?d put together a couple months of good training until about age 50. By age 51 (1998) until about 18 months ago I was hardly racing at all and ran only a few miles per week.

For the past year and a half I?ve been back running decent mileage again and racing. Although PR days are long gone, running and racing is as exciting now as it has ever been.

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
Currently 32 years old and been running for about 13 years. Most of my PR's were set 4-5 years ago, but I think that's mainly because I ran into a streak of injuries starting in 2002 and am just now getting back where I can train consistently at the level I want. I hope to break most of my PR's this year and continue on from there.

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
Age 12-18 (HS) - mostly in-season only. PRs mile 4:53, 3200m 10:32, 5k (CC) 17:01

Age 18-22 (College) - Year round but low (20-40) mileage. Little PR progression until age 20; 5K 16:13, 10K 34:18

Age 22-25 - Progressively higher milege, topping out with a 4000 mile year in 2003. 5K down to 15:37, 10K 31:45, HM 1:10:12, marathon 2:29:27

Age 25-27 - Suffered inability to recover, sometimes ran great and sometimes poorly. Diagnosed about5 months ago with low iron. Brought it back up, now training well...hope to break 2 year streak of no PRs very soon.

I'm sure my best years are still ahead of me.

Re: consecutive training years, how many for you?
Teenager - weights all the time

Age 20-23 - weights big time

23 - 27 Intense cardio training, exercise classes, occasional running, still intense with weights

28 - 35 Classes with running about 12 miles per week - even more intense with weights/supplements

36 - present (will be 40 in May)
Went off the Creatine, still lift a decent amount of weights but more maintenance (dropped 15lbs of muscle) increased miles to 18 - 20 miles per week and last 2 years increase to 25 - 27 in spring/early summer (for 1/2 marathon).

PRd two straight years in 5K, 10K and 1/2 marathon. My miles won't change much but I am training smarter and still learning. I plan on PRing in the above races again this year at age 40. I have learned a few more things in the past year that should get me over the top.
