Marathon Survey

Hi All

I'm conducting a simple survey of runners who've completed a full marathon. What I'm looking for is;

Age (on race day)
Sex
Time
"What stopped me running faster at the end was......."

Re: Marathon Survey

M
3:09 - just running to finish

35
M
3:03 - even pace - fitness level - 5 weeks after marathon#1

35
M
2:56 - Weighed 232 pounds - this was decent for fitness level

36
M
2:56 - Good for fitness level ran even race - had took a few months off in the winter

36
M
2:49 - Should have ran faster ealier - last 6 miles the fastest of the marathon

36
M
2:47 - Poor hydration strategy and ended up low on hydration - also ran a little fast the 1st 15 miles - these things cost me @ 2 minutes in overall time.

Generally is seems that in all my races - there comes a time 18-22 miles where I have to embrace and welcome the pain of pushing muscles that have a fair amount of lactic acid in them and forcing them to continue. I think a lot of people (Not all) think that they hit the wall (Glycogen Depletion) but actually just do not want to embrace the pain.

...my calves locked up over the last four miles, probably due to runing in shoes I never used for a long run--but I did not slow down. My last mile was faster than my first.

sick, simultaneously over- and under-trained, and preparing for Boston in one of the flattest places on the planet.

duh, I didn't finish!

Next week: 34, still male, and I'm hoping for sub-3:05.

Re: Marathon Survey
Age-33-Male
2:48:23 - unaware of splits -first time to race this far

Age-34
2:58:00 -Tried to break 2:40 with less training than year before ? major bonk

Age- 41
2:57:03
Idiotic pacing. Ran 1st half in 80 when I knew I?d have to go through Chinatown hills later (San Francisco). Most painful marathon ever.

Age- 41
2:50:17 - Just the normal late marathon pain

Age-43
2:43:15 - Start a little too fast but held on o.k.

Age-44
2:44:09
Hills through first 20 beat up the quads. Lost my PR during last 2 miles. Big slowdown.

Age-47
2:58:09
San Francisco hills see to it that last 10k is never easy

Those are all 7 of lifetime marathons and pain was always part of reason for not running faster at end.

Re: Marathon Survey
  • Age 24, male
    - 3:53
    - Not enough endurance. Raced on a whim with no marathon training (longest run 6 miles), with no intention of finishing. Went out hard, but then had no way of dropping out.

    - Age 31
    - 2:49
    - Leg muscles destroyed, walking at the end. Not enough long runs (only 1 run over 16 miles) so couldn't handle the distance.

    - Age 32
    - 5:25
    - Out way to hard and hit the wall at 18. 80 minute 19th mile, and then walked to the end. Splits 1:22/4:03.

    - Age 34
    - DNF
    - Pretty fit, but out too fast on a hot day (1:13 half). Didn't drink and hit the wall at 30K.

    - Age 38
    - 2:44 PR
    - Quads wasted by hills, walking at the end. Injured for 8 weeks before the race and felt I lost a lot of endurance and never got the speed.

Not sure, but I doubt the sex change will allow you to qualify for marathon O.T.

Re: Marathon Survey
age/best for the year. Male. I've run 11, so this is a sampling.

30 / 2:55 - slowed at 21, started too fast
31 / 2:39 - inadequate fluid intake
32 / 2:39 - struggled in middle, not at end.
33 / 2:35 - held pace, good enough.

That's it, so far.
