Lifetime Goals?

What are your lifetime running goals...ones that if you achieved but nothing more, you'd truly be happy with having that as your all-time PR? When did you set them, and how are you doing in achieving them?

800m - sub-2:00. Probably never happen unless I quit training for long distance altogether.
mile - 4:20 - haven't even tried. I'll get back to it later
5K - sub-15:00 - I'm probably close but haven't run one recently (PR 15:37 from indoor track 2003). I have a love-hate relationship with this event.
8K - No firm goal but I'll be happy to get under 25:00.
10K - sub-31:00. Hope to be close next week, but don't think I'll get it this year.
HM - sub-1:09. This one I would like to lower but it's realistic for now.
Marathon - sub-2:22 and make the Trials.

I actually set most of these in the 2001-2002 time frame, when all were far, far off. I have made decent progress in the middle range (5K thru HM) and less on the edges. Hopefully by this fall I'll be close on everything except the mid-distance events. If I can avoid over-training or getting too busy with work/family, I hope to break most of them by next year.

Sub-4 mile

sub-14 5K

sub-2:20

I haven't decided yet if I would want to participate in the Olympics, if I ever was good enough someday. Just the safety issues concern me.

Right now I'm a 15 year old male with a 4:59 mile PR.

Yeah, all those dead Olympic athletes each time around is a real drag.

I would like to run in the Canadian cross country championships and run well since (I think) it's actually an open race, as well as make the national marathon and half marathon championships.

Yeah, for the same reason I decided not to put windows in my house just in case a pig happened to fly through and hit me in the head ...

Seriously, i) the Olympics is a 1 in a million shot and ii) you can't live your life worrying about what MIGHT happen. Everyone dies sometime, just make sure you live to the fullest in the meantime. Morbid perhaps, but it's true.

The National Capital Marathon in Ottawa is the Canadian Marathon Championships. I'm running it this year. ( May 28 )

It's too bad there isn't a US style Olympic marathon trial for us Canucks. Running in that would probably be one of my lifetime goals.

My lifetime goals were to run in the Olympics and the Boston marathon. At least I ran Boston. I'm sure I still have a shot at the Olympics, too, right after I get through the infinitely more likely occurances of winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning and having a pig fly through the window and hit me in the head ...

Hey, you'll never get it done sitting at the computer. I mean, of course, getting hit by a pig flying through a window.

I forgot to mention the second goal on my list, right after XC nationals: run a 10k on the track. That means, I'm guessing, that I'd be in low-30s shape, though I don't know if I'm good enough to get under 31.

LOL!

Seriously, Dan, aurang, I want to thank you. I don't know what the heck I was thinking saying "I don't know if I would do the Olympics if I was good enough to." You have shown me the error of my ways. Of course, I would frigging do it, the chances of anything happening are a million to one, and its a once in a lifetime opportunity! Olympics is the #1 place you can be

And by the way, even though it may sound like it, I sware this post isn't sarcasm.

Thank you

Re: Lifetime Goals?
Yes,it would be a dream to run in the oylimpics. I would say my goals are to complete a marathon, run a sub 4:30 mile or 1600, and be known as a "local hero" or better yet a "local crazy man that runs too much" A am still fairly young, so letss see if i actucally have the potential to do any of this.

One step at a time, man. I have to win the lottery and get hit by lightning first ... then I'll figure out the logistics of getting hit in the head by a flying pig ... I think I'd have to move the computer, it's fairly close to the front window, but the trajectory's all wrong ...

I'm glad you didn't take it personally, I was just trying to make a point while being a smartass which is pretty much the same as all the rest of my posts.

Re: Lifetime Goals?
Interestingly, I've never really thought about this too much, but it seems like I might have less-lofty goals than some of you. As Mark Wetmore states, "there are no miracles in running." After minimal thought, here goes:

800 - sure, sub-2:00... whatever.
mile - sub-4:20 would be nice, but probably never happening, as my college 1500 PR was 4:09. Not to mention, I may never even run one again. Downhill road mile would be my only chance.
3k - under 8:45. Currently 8 seconds away, as of this past winter.
5k - I guess as someone with a 15:15 PR, I should say sub-15. Seems logical.
5-mile - under 25:30. Current PR is :30 away from that, but could probably have been a lot less if I ran it at the right time.
10k - sub-31:30. This one bugs me. I need to get in a fast track or road 10k this year, which hasn't happened in a long time. College track PR of 32:44 still stands, in part because I've had so few chances to break it. Fast 10k opportunities are like dinosaurs around here.
10-mile - I think anything under 53:00 sounds cool.
1/2m - under 1:10 would be great. A little like the 10k, I have had few opportunities to get a good PR for this distance. It currently stands as whatever is in my bio, from a split in a hilly 16-miler this past winter. Grrr...
marathon - under 2:30. I would put money on this coming down this fall, if I could stay healthy for the next 6 months (which I would NOT put money on).
That's all I got.

Re: Lifetime Goals?
from a 'would-be-soccer-mom', if only my kids liked soccer ... hahahhaha ...

lifetime goals .. didn't have any set in concrete but little thoughts in my mind twinkling about are here:

1) run a 5:30 mile again, with training ... very lofty and not realistic but hopeful ... more realistic is under 6:00 and maintain that for as many years as I can!

***what I am doing to make this happen is got my base up to 30+ MPW and am doing track workouts 2X week aimed at basic speed and VO2Max

2) 5K under 21:00 and maintain as many years as possible ...

*** same as stated for the mile time

3) sub 3:30 marathon ... very lofty and not very realistic but hopeful ... more realistic is train for and FINISH in under 4 hours ... will not be happy if I finish slower than 8:30 pace but that'd probably keep me trying so long as I finished, lol

*** outside of a year lay-off with knee and then broken foot I've been steadily increasing weekly milage and LR length with structured workouts for LT, VO2Max and striders for BS to round things out ... even though focus is on shorter races this year I am increasing LRs to marathon range and will try to complete one this fall if I stay strong and healthy; either way, my goal for 2007 is to focus training on marathon using the strong base I will build this year ...

4)WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY back in my mind is training for and running at least 30-50 mile races (if you can call finishing racing, lol) - if I complete a couple marathons and make it in my 8:30 pace I can see training for higher milage soon after as being very realistic ...

5) top lifetime goal is to always, for the rest of my life, stay healthy enough that within a month of trying be able to run 3-5 miles without a walk break ... I don't know if I'll always run but I always want to remain active and plan to do just that and running is a good way to measure success in that as far as I'm concerned ... every few years throughout my adult life I have done this even though I didn't seriously pursue running again till 2 years ago ... I'll be 38 next month and am happy with things thus far ...

Re: Lifetime Goals?
5k: sub-15:00 (currently at 15:18)
8k: sub-25:00 (currently at 25:18)
10k: sub-31:00 (currently at 31:38)
10 miles: sub-52:00 (currently at 52:24)
1/2 mar.: anything right around 1:09, and I have a ways to go because I've never run a good half marathon
Marathon: 2:22:00 or better

Competitively, and I know both of these are a stretch, particularly the 2nd, if I somehow managed to qualify for the Trials in the marathon or made a US team at any distance/event (anything from the NACAC cross-country meet to an Ekiden relay), I'd be the happiest guy in the world.
