video of Cheruiyot's fall at end of Chicago

Chicago's CBS station's website has video footage of Cheruiyot falling at the end of the Chicago marathon:

Ouch. I hope he ends up okay. Those advertisement mats aren't the grippiest things to run over.

It was an amazing race and to have it end like that is awful. You can't even celebrate cause you are in the ER. I guess I struggle with the fact that there was even a question that he finished as he never crossed the line. It is obvious he won in my opinion. Great race by all and US did well I thought. Kind of hard to say how bad they did when times all appearedd to be a little slower than normal. Lots of US did great.

from what i read, his feet crossed the mats and he won for sure. that was pretty lame to have those slick banners on the road there. hope he is ok.

Have there been any recent reports on how he's doing? He's an amazing runner, and I hope he recovers all right from this.

The sad thing is that he will be remembered for the fall and not for the run.

Re: video of Cheruiyot's fall at end of Chicago
JoeV: I ran Chicago, and the local media had extensive coverage of the fall. According to everyone involved--including the race director, race referee, and even Chereuiyot's agent--the decals had nothing to do with the fall. The course was not wet, and they removed the decals immediately as a precaution, but 40,000 runners crossed the same decals last year without a single slip.

Chereuiyot's agent (I know I'm spelling it wrong, but I can't be bothered to look it up), told the press that as far as he and and his client were concerned, Chereuiyot simply lost his balance as he leaned back, and the fall had nothing to do with the decal.

Re: video of Cheruiyot's fall at end of Chicago
Oh, one more thing: You're right that he did win, but not because his feet crossed onto the mat. In a press conference, Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski said that USATF regulations specify that a race ends when a runner crosses the finish line with his torso. As Cheruiyot slid feet-first onto the mat, his torso crossed the finish line. Thus, he finished the race, and won.
