Re: Ryan Hall
It is odd to see Meb as the slowest of the elites, in spite of having an Olympic silver medal.

I'm not sure I want to speculate on what Hall will run. I haven't heard what his race plan is, but what little he has said indicates he is planning on going aggressively. That could mean a huge debut, or an ugly finish. I think he is certainly capable of going 2:08 or better right now, but so much can happen in a marathon, especially with no prior experience. But, he is running it to gain experience, and getting the experience of going out conservatively and running a 2:12-2:14 probably isn't as valuable as going with the leaders and seeing what happens. He has to feel like he can run with anyone right now, so he might as well try.

Maybe he'll be the guy throwing down the 4:30 surge

Re: Ryan Hall
Look at it this way, Hall ran 13 straight at 4:33. A 4:50 pace for 26.2 = 2:06:42

I would think if he was able to do that, he should be moving very comfortably after 18 at 4:50, which is probably what the top handful will be running. That's 17 sec per mile slower than the pace he ran solo at in Houston, which is huge. If his legs are reasonably fresh when he lines up, I can't help but think he'll be very competitive with the world's best. Of course 26 miles is a long ways and he hasn't done it before.

I want to see Hall, Lel, Geb, and Tergat coming into the final stretch together. I want runners all over the world jumping off the sofa and screaming at their TV sets--"Go! Go, baby! GO!!"

You won't see that in the US - though with any luck and an early wake-up, I'll sit at my desk and watch it online!

Re: Ryan Hall
With satellite TV, I am surprised no one has made a running channel yet. Throw in a bunch of training stuff for beginners to get a decent audience and get ad space to pay for it, but then cover the races for the people who really want to see them.

Look at all the other special interest garbage on TV that makes it. There's got to be a market. Come on!

Great thread by the way. Ryan Hall, one fast dude, wow!

Re: Ryan Hall
Great thread.
It really surprises me that the US networks don't carry some of the marathon majors, esp. with likes of Deena, Meb, Sell, Hall, and Culpepper. In Europe, we can get live coverage of all 5 majors, and others Paris , Amsterdam, Rotterdam etc... All this, despite a dearth of top European marathoning talent (in men's race at least). Perhaps it all comes down to advertising and sponsorship? Shame.
Anyway, I'm intrigued to see how Hall fares in London.

WCSN.com has a 24-hour channel in the works. I'd expect to see it available on cable or satellite by summer.

And Boston is on TV nationally (Versus, used to be OLN). Its earlier start time means I'll have no problem getting the local sports bar to put it up on the big screen!

Gotta love the brass set on Ryan Hall - sticking his nose right into a hornet's nest like London. Good for him - he's only got one shot to learn to race the marathon before the Trials when it really counts - why not do it against a stacked field? And smart move to cash in on his Houston performance - I hope he got a phat appearance fee to enter London. As for how I think he'll do - obviously sub 2:10 is well within his range - I could see him throwing down a 2:08 with a solid but not spectacular debut...which might net him 8th place in that race! Should be good to watch though!

How many months before the Trials?![/B]<HR>

Well, color me impressed with your predictions... perhaps Ryan Hall read this post and thought "8th?! I'll show HIM!!"

I may have to schedule a business trip to Europe to watch the race...although I watched part of the race on the internet and it really wasn't too bad. Heck, they don't even broadcast NYC, Boston or Chicago live nationally in the US - why would they do London?! Grrrr...

Who do you have: Mavericks or Warriors? How many games? How much money should I put down?

Re: Ryan Hall
Ryan ran an awesome race! Wonder what race he'll do next. By the way he has been talking I think he is going to focus on 26.2 going forward.

When are the trials?
