Trying to build up again. 53 miles this week.

Mon 10 EZ
Tue 8 EZ
Wed 0
Thu 10 EZ
Fri 0
Sat 10 EZ
Sun 15 slow (hot!)

Doing okay. Today's run was rough though. Temps pushing 80 F... sweat response not yet working quite right. HR was really high, given the effort.

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
Mon - 2 ez, 2 light tempo (5:40, 5:20), 2 1/2 ez. Achilles bad.
Tues - Off, achilles so bad I'm having trouble walking.
Wed - 4 slow jog/walk, achilles very bad.
Thurs - 4 slow jog/walk, with 2 x 400 at marathon pace (99, 95). Achilles bad, but maybe improving?
Fri - 3 slow, some walking. Achilles still bad.
Sat - Off, doing as little as possible.
Sun - Eugene Marathon, 2:45:23, 28th overall, 1st master

Week: 43.7 total

I paced the marathon perfectly for a PR, but wheels just fell off with 2 miles to go. I still hung in there pretty well, spent a little time in the med tent, and got a good result. My achilles actually feel a little better now than before the marathon. Go figure...

Well there's your problem, you're just not running enough marathons ...

Seriously, though Greg, that's a great race considering all of your troubles in the last little while.

As for my training this week, I just did 15 miles worth of light jogging in my second week post Boston. Just taking my time, I'm in no rush to jump back into serious training.

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
Monday -- 1.50 Hour Cross Ride
Tuesday -- 4k Light Run
Wednesday --
Thursday Evening -- 1.00 Hour Flat Spin
Friday Evening -- 1.00 Hour Flat Spin
Saturday Evening -- 1.00 Hour Flat Spin
Sunday Afternoon -- 2.00 Hours On the Legs
Sunday Evening -- 1.00 Hour Flat Spin

The mystery foot problem didn't like the short run on Tuesday so I gave it a rest on Wednesday whereafter it went well on the bike. Decided to start doing long walks with running interspersed on some days and began yesterday. The foot did fairly well with this and it feels as if it is doing better this morning. Hope to pick up the short runs again this week if I may. Congratz on the great marathon megapronator!

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
M: 71/2 steady, about 7:30 pace
T: 9 a.m. at 7:30, 4 p.m. slower
W: 12 speedwork, with a ladder, 800, 1200, 1600, 800 at 5k pace (5:30/mile) and one lap jog recovery after each one. Finally starting to come around with speed.
Th: 4 recovery at 8:30 pace
Fr: 5 at 7:30 pace with last 1/2 mile at 5:45 pace
Sa: 90 minute slow trail run, probably about 10 total.
Sun: 14, very hill, tough trail run at a steady pace, last 3 on road at 6:15 pace (goal half marathon pace).
Total: 61. That's high mileage for me.

The long run on Sunday was a tough hilly run but good. It is one thing to write down on my schedule to do a long progression run with the last 3 at goal half pace, but it is a difficult workout to finish. My legs were shot after we came out of the trails, but I was able to maintain 6:15 pace. I'm trying to train my legs to run fast when they are already exhausted. I will only do that type of long run every other weekend. It took a lot out of me.

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
Greg, sweet marathon! I'm so happy for you. My friend down here in AL did the Eugene full as well, but didn't quite get his sub-3.

Anyhow, my last week, which was a major recovery:

M: Off
T: 6x200m cutdowns, 200mR: 33, 33, 32, 32, 31, 31 (Hurt like ****), 8.5M
W: 2x2000m in/outs 3kP/LT, 400mR, 8.5M
R: 6.6M EZ run on trails
F: 3.4M Jog around a soccer field
SA: 5k Race, 17:30 (ran the last mile on cruise--unintentionally--and wound up going slower than I wanted. No one was around to push me. First time I ever won a race, albeit on a slow time), 7.5M
SU: 10.5M Long Run

Total: 45M

So, this week and next, continue to work on speed and race more. Hope everyone is well...

PS: Here's a question for all of you out there. If you had to choose btw 2 5ks, would you choose: 1)one which is on Friday evening, will have about 300-400 runners (some of whom are fast), but has some rolling terrain OR 2) a Sat. morning 5k on a flat course you've run before w/ not a whole **** lot of runners in your time range.

In other words, which race do you think would be more likely to draw a better race from you: a race on an "easy" course w/ not many runners, or a race on a tougher course w/ some runners in your time range?

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
M - off
T - AM, 6 easy 6:40 avg. PM, 8 miles including 4 mile tempo 5:19 avg. Best so far this year.
W - 12.5 easy 6:45 avg.
R - off
F - 12.25 miles, including 8X(2:30ON/1:30OFF).
Sa - 7.25 miles easy sub-7 avg.
Su - off
Total for week: 46 miles

---Volume was terrible, but the workouts went well. Goal HM next weekend, we'll try for 1:11:30 if the weather is decent. It's been a long time since I went into a goal race so far off PR shape, so the motivation is hard.

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
Tusca, I would choose the race with the tougher course and more people for you to run with. I would get more satisfaction from running a tough course well and battling a few good runners to the end. You can always pick another day and easy course to try for sub 17:00. It's too bad you and I don't live in the same state. If we lined up at the starting line together chances are one, or both of us, would go sub 17.

I may run a hilly 5k this Saturday and run long on Sunday. I have never tried that, but as long as I don't tack on too many miles after the 5k, I should be able to run long without a problem the next day.

Thanks MRCT. It is a shame about not towing the starting line, but who knows...where are you, coincidentally? Michigan?

Anyhow, good points about the function of competition.

And by the way: I think it's fine to run long in SU after a SA race, especially if the LR is under/at 2 hours and is run pretty easily. It's been my experience that past 2 hours I start going into glycogen depletion and then I'm sh*t the next day or two...

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
First off a huge congrats to Mega, truly inspiring!!!!

Andy,
Good luck this weekend.

Tusca,
17:30 isn't bad, remember one step at a time. As to your question, two ways to look at it. I would almost always pick the tougher race with better runners, that's what it is all about. However, if you feel you let down mentally because you were alone last weekend, then maybe running another similar race would give you a chance to work on that aspect again.

My week:
M-5
Tu-5
W- 6
Th-6
F-6 including 8x200
Sa-8
Su-6
Total-42
Feeling great, had to hold back all week. Will start ramping up the intensity this week. Next goal is a local 10k around July 4th, want to break 35:00. Will put the marathon training on hold and really work on my speed, which I haven't done for a few years.

Re: training summaries 4/23 to 4/29
Congrats on everyone's races this past week.

Week 15
Mon: 8 miles
Tue: 4am + 6pm
Wed: 6 miles w/ two just slow of threshold
Thu: 8am + 4pm
Fri: 8 miles
Sat: 8 miles
Sun: 5k race w/ 9 miles am + 4pm
Total: 65

Spent most of the week trying to recover from the half that I wasn't going to race but did. Still wasn't ready on Wednesday, so I bagged the week's workouts, with the hope of running well on Sunday. 5k went well. Opened in 5:34 and had a 100m lead just before 2 miles, but I made a wrong turn and had to back track to get back on course, which put me in third. I went back into the lead with a half mile to go and won by 30s in 18:02. My wrong turn added about 200m, so it would have been roughly a 17:20 otherwise. This was my first outright win (have won team triathlons before), which was pretty cool.

Tusca, I'm in Connecticut. I was hoping my member name would give that away. One of these days I will learn how to type up a profile with a picture. Although all of my race photos are pretty ugly. I need to get a picture at the halfway point in a half marathon, when I still look somewhat composed.

Oh, the CT...duh. I used to live in Boston, no more, sadly...

Laker, it's funny: literally as I crossed the finish line, the first thought that hit me was "well, this is what Laker meant by one step at a time"...and don't get me wrong: I'm happy w/ 17:30, seeing as how in June 06 my PB was 19 flat...nice improvement in a year IMHO...
