I am training for the half marathon. It will be my first official race. The full marathon will have to wait a while.

Re: Houston Runners??
I am running the EP half marathon which is the same day as the Houston marathon I think. January 19th? I keep waiting for the website to be updated.

On June 1st I began with a 104 KRBE run and then joined a training program. I run in Memorial Park on Saturday's with a group and then 3 days a week by myself. I have been surprised at how well my body has adjusted to running. I have a couple slight pains but nothing serious. I started out and couldn't run a 1/2 mile. I ran 5.5 last weekend. Of course first thing I learned was to go slower. I am not as quick as I want to be but I know it will come eventually.

So RX7 have you ran in a lot of races?

Rachel....

I have run a few 5Ks but that is it. My brother ran the Houston Marathon last year and it has inspired me to train to run one. The 104 KRBE run that you did.....was it at Memorial Park in the evening?

Hope all is going well with your training...

Happy running

Re: Houston Runners??
The 104 run was at Greenspoint Mall at 7 am on Saturday. It was nice because they closed part of Greens Rd for us but it was so hot and humid! The run was a 6.6 miler but I heard they shortened it by 1/2 mile. It didn't get started until about 7:10 and it took me 1 hr 9 min to finish. I pushed at the last and it took me a few minutes to try to catch my breath after I finished. My first 'official' run. I started with a friend of mine that is faster than myself and it had me off track. I knew better but I kept talking to her and jogging along. She probably had a negative split while I was almost on empty the last half. Good learning experience though. There are 2 more runs in preparation for the half marathon. Hopefully the next time I will be better prepared and keep my pace.

My sister went with me Sat and she wanted to start the program but didn't want to be with strangers and my group is to far ahead now for her to train with me. That is neat that your brother inspired you to train for the marathon. Maybe next year I will train for the marathon.

Hope your training is going well.

Hello Rachel...

everything is going good with the training...this weekend I completed my long run of 9 miles and pace was 10:05. My goal is to complete the marathon under 5 hours so as long as I keep up this pace I will be doing good

hope all is going well with your training too

Re: Houston Runners??
Hi RX7,

It sounds like you are on target to finish in the time you want. I hadn't thought of what time I wanted to finish in. I think I will wait and see if I can get my pace down a little over the next 5 months. I don't think I can add miles and work on pace at the same time so I'll have to wait and see. Are your long runs feeling okay? I have a 7 mile run this Sat and I hope that I can go a little slower and enjoy it more than this past weekend.

I found when the preparation races are. On October 5th we are scheduled to run the Brazosport Run for the Arts. It is 10 miles. Then on November 10th we are running the KRTS Classic 25K (but we only run 12 miles) that is the 2nd race of the Houston Marathon Warm-Up Series. Are you running in the Warm-Up series?

Aweeztx,

Good luck with the Half! I don't know how many people are going to be running but I am sure a lot. Did you know that the sign up party for the Half is on Sept 9th at Memorial Park? Online registration begins on August 16th which is $5 cheaper and you can bring your confirmation to the party and get a free "in-training" t-shirt. Also free food, music, and beer. Course you can't drink the beer but it should be fun to see everyone who will be there race day.

Re: Houston Runners??
Rachel,

My long runs have been going pretty good. The toughest long run that I had was 6 miles which was about a month ago and that was a mostly a mind thing. The program that I am running has been excellent. This is what has been working for me: When running 8 mile runs, I drink water at 5 miles. And for 9 miles (9 has been my longest so far), I take GU and drink water at 5. It is recommended to drink a sports drink or take a Gel when running 90 minutes or more. A few of the miles have been tough but overall things are going good.

I haven't thought about doing any of the marathon warm-up races but its something that I will check into....

Happy Running

Re: Houston Runners??
Yes, I am training but would like to find a running partner in Houston, on the WestSide. Say Cullen Park and Hershey Park to run in the week.

Please advise.

Nick
