Re: Maine Runners
Bob that sounds great to be able to jump in after a run. I have fished the river in the past from a boat and also along RT 9 and have not done that for some time. Now that i live just up the road i hope to do it more often. Also i hope to run in Saco and Biddeford and at Camp Elis. Is there any good routes out around UNE?

ElUFA
I wanted to know if Bob was doing any fishing on the Saco river. But i have done all three in the past but i like to surf fish the most. What about you?
Do you do any ice fishing and are there any good spots in the Buxton area? What is your favorite fishing?

Are there any trails in this area because i just move here in November i unsure of the area?
Do you run along route 202 or are there better places in the local area?
As far as trails i do like back cove and Gambo trail in Windham.
Does anyone do any snow shoe races...

What does everyone do for Crosstraining?

Keep up the good work and it will pay off on your runs.

Haven't done any snowshoe races but would love to give it a try. I have been snowshoeing a lot the last couple of years, it's a heck of a workout. Where do they have races?

Other than that, I lift weights 3-4 times a week during the winter for cross training, and put some time in on the stationary bike. In the warmer months I do a lot of biking (mostly mountain biking), kayaking, swimming, and hiking. Also play some group sports occasionally.

Re: Maine Runners
they have them around the state and last year they had some races in Biddeford. I will check and see what i can find out.

You do quit well on your cross training. I'm hoping to do better.

What is you race pace? I've just started to get under 8 minutes before i got injured..

I am now starting to get wary of this winter and all the snow as of late and looking forward to some warmer weather, even though I continue to run outdoors, mainly because I really can't stand the treadmill. Although, I'm leaving this week for 10 days in the sunny Caribbean, so life could be worse! <HR>

I was wary of the winter before it ever began! I too used to run outdoors in the winter but after several close calls withe cars due to snowbanks and darkness I decided to join a gym. I pretty much do all my running on the dreaded treadmill in the winter. In fact I just completed a long run of 22 miles this week end (3:09:45). I would still prefer to run outside but have gotten over the "mental" hurdle that most have with running on the treadmill. I also work some good cross training in with all of my short runs with some weight training and some stationary bike riding. I hope you have a great trip in the "sunny Caribbean", I am headed to Las Vegas on March 18th for a week and will certainly be running outside then. Actually I hope to get in a few runs outside if the weather can at least stay calm towards the end of February since I am running the half-marathon at Boston's Run to Remember.

I look forward to meeting up with you sometime and taking some nice runs. What type of pace do you prefer on a 5 or 6 mile run? I like a nice comfortable 8:00 minute mile at that distance, it is comfortable and still a good work out for me.

Re: Maine Runners
Boothy - I like to flyfish the most. Not to beat my own drum, but I'm actually a much better fisherman than I am a runner. I also do a lot of surf fishing for striper during the summer and the place that I fish is the jetty at Camp Ellis (mouth of Saco River). As for ice fishing, I don't do too much of that, but Kennebunk Pond in Lyman is a good spot. The IF&W stock that pond with brown and brook trout, and there are largemouth bass in the pond as well. Speaking of largemouth bass, there's a 13 acre pond in my backyard (own by our association) that was stocked w/largemouth bass some 12 years or so ago. It's now a self sustaining and thriving population. Action in the summer can get really hot, so if you're looking to do some bass fishing, send me an e-mail at jwu@neamaine.com. I also know of a lot of good spots for fly/trout fishing throughout the state. However, I prefer to keep them secret and not post them online. Send me an e-mail if you're looking for those type of fishing and we can talk.

As for running, I live on the Gorham end of Buxton (off Route 112, near Route 25). I mostly run on the road from my house to Groveville and back (8 miles). Another loop that I do (which always freak my wife out) is from home to Route 114 in Gorham and back for 8 miles). If you're looking to do some trail running, Gorham Trail has a trail that basically parallels Route 202/4. The only section of that trail that I'm familar with is near the Gorham high school end, so I'm not sure how long is the trail. I too run along the Back Bay/East End trail a lot (really close to work), so we may have actually crossed paths without knowing it!! Other trails that I like to run are Stroutwater, Macworth Island, Audubon, and Freeport. Portland Trail (www.trails.org) has some great maps, so check them out.

I went and signed up for the Boston Run to Remember 1/2 Marathon today. Still not sure if I'll be able to run it or not because I may have to travel for work that weekend, but I've ran along the Charles before and I like that route. Hopefully work won't get in the way for this race.

I usually run my daily five miles at around a 7:30 pace, once in a while I go out and see how fast I can run it. My best was 6:52, although that was before winter, and before my ankle sprain. I'm quite a bit slower now.

My last half-marathon last October I ran at a 7:24 pace. Lately though I have been running my long runs around 8-8:30 pace. Once the warm weather gets here I will start to push it more.

Sounds good, 8:00 will be a good pace for me too. I'll catch up with you on this thread after I get back in about two weeks. I'm on my way out the door!

Well from what I read here I would say that we are somewhere near each other as far as running is concerned. My last half-marathon in March 2004 I ran in 1:33:39 a 7:09 pace that was the Mass Law Enforcement half, and in October I ran my last 5K in 20:10 for a 6:30 pace, I am really shooting to get in under 20:00 for my 5K times and think I should be able to do it this year.

I run pretty much all of my long runs at around an 8:00 minute pace and even my shorter runs at the same pace unless I am incorporating speed work such as intervals or hills into my run then I jack it up.

Look forward to running with you soon.

You are correct - the cold is something else too. I have been running inside a lot more this year than I have in the past.

What does everyone think about the proposed Sunday hunting? I do not think it is a good thing. I avoid certain running routes in October/November due to hunting season - except for Sundays. I hope it does not pass.

Hi Bob, I just got back from almost two weeks in the Carib and wouldn't you know it, this morning halfway through my long run I pulled a muscle in my back..could barely walk after that, much less run. I'm not sure but I feel that maybe it was because of the cold, my muscles felt very tight after a few miles on the road. Luckily I had my cell phone with me and called my wife to come get me. So, this sux.. I have my first 5K next Sunday so am hoping that it's just a couple of day thing. It is also one of my goals for this year to get my 5K time down under 20 minutes. Boy, now I really can't wait until spring! I'm pretty sick of the snow, and it looks like we are gonna get whacked again this week.

MaineRunner, I too am sick of the winter. However, I simply cannot stand the threadmill so force myself to run outside despite the weather. I have been averaging almost 25 mpw so far this winter (was sidelined for a while due to ankle sprain), but only ran 5 miles on the TM all winter.

My two cents on the Sunday hunting: It doesn't really bother me. I do some trail running but only during the warmer months. And although my daily route takes me right by water company property where hunting is permitted, I wear a bright orange hat during hunting season and feel pretty safe. It is only for about a month anyway so I can deal with that. Besides, I don't think the law will pass.
