strength training while training for first marathon

Hi I just ran my first half marathon and I am now training for a full marathon. My question is should I still strength train (I'm following Hal Higdon's program)while I'm trainig for a marathon. Would it be considered overtraining? Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: strength training while training for first marathon
I weight trained my legs twice a week and my upper body twice a week before my first marathon. All I can say it worked for me. Especially pumping my arms with light weight (8-12LBS) in a running style.

Re: strength training while training for first marathon
Congrats on your first half and good luck on your first full. Which race are you running?

I posted on this in November and got some good responses. You might want to check them out...the thread is called 'Strength Training'.

I focus on core exercises for abs and back and upper body sets with 15-25 pound dumbbells at high reps. Since I run 5 days a week and cross train one day I don't do any additional leg strength training.

Hope this helps!
