Maureen. I'm not a local, but if you do stay in Westbank I've heard that the traffic on the bridge to Kelowna can back up during heavy volume periods - you may want to give yourself plenty of time to get to the start if you stay on the opposite side of the lake.

How was the race, by the way?

If you drive up at and think you'll get a room without a reservation, the most likely outcome is you'll be sleeping in your car.

The next-best scenario is you'll be in the "Honeymoon Suite" for $350 / night.

Last year, I saw many desperate last-minute room seekers phoning and driving around futilely looking for a place to stay.

The Okanagon course is mostly flat... but can be quite windy.

Club Fat *** - Mountain Highway Madness - Results and Report

They said it would never be done. Geoff Palmer, a recent immigrant from the flatlands of Winterpeg, however, done done it. On Saturday 11 September 04, he became the first person to ever go platinum in the Mountain Highway
Madness!

A veteran of the Rocky Raccoon 100-miler, Blackfoot Ultra and the Great Canadian Death Race, it was Palmer's first time at Mountain Highway Madness. "Allison (Knowles) and I had a lot of fun on the first 3 laps. The pizza bread and Eatmore bars kept me fueled for the fourth lap and the mountain bikers who kept asking, "HOW many laps are you doing?" kept me motivated. If I'd had some competition, I might have done five laps."

After the monsoons of Friday evening, it was a wonder anyone got out of bed for the run early Saturday morning. As it turned out, the rain held off at the start and as Laddie Hannan put it, "we ran between droplets" on the return leg of the first lap. The general consensus was that the cool, moist
weather was ideal for good times in this, the fifth running of the event.

The only downer of the day was that Colin Freeland's blue, Capilano Eagles vest and Doug MacKay's green windbreaker went AWOL from their resting place near the water fountain. If a good Samaritan picked them up, there's a cool beer as reward. Speaking of cool beers, all participants who attended the post run brunch were treated to a free cool one by the good folks at the Mosquito Creek Bar and Grill. All runners received some hammer gels and Laddie Hannan came away from this free run with a free ($45) entry to the
Grouse Grind run for her efforts.

Mark your calendars for the next Mountain Highway Madness on Sunday 20 March!

Ean Jackson
Host of the Mountain Highway Madness

I did a 24 - miler this morning and my legs were achig when I was done. My cardio is good, cuz i wasnt even breathing hard, but I guess I need to do some more speedwork........maybe too late. I did the 24 in 3:44. My goal for the marathon has been scaled down from BQ to just finishing the **** thing upright and conscious!! <HR>

Maureen, wow! 24 miles. Looks like you will have no problem finishing, and I don't know why you would want to scale back your BQ ambitions. You need what, 3:50? Even if you ran the 24 all-out, which I doubt, taper + race day should certainly add some energy. And you were not that far off BQ pace today.

I did 22 miles today, the longest I will run before Victoria. The rain was not too bad at first - it kept me nice and cool - but after I got drenched it became a pain.

Thanks, Bob. I took a long time deciding between Vic or OIM, chose OIM because it is supposed to be flatter.......we shall see. I just found the 24 miles my legs were aching by the end, and I really want a positive marathon experience. So I dont want to put too much pressure on myself, as I tend to be a tad competetive........lol. Best of luck in the remainder of your training and, of course on the day. Should be an interesting weekend, lotsa races to hear about!!

It was coming down pretty heavy today... think I caught a cold from today's rain run... but the good thing about the rain is it keeps the crowds down on the seawall... of course, now its clearing up... :-(

Did you decide on a tune-up/indicator race, Bob?

They have nice finisher medals at OIM.

Another good thing is you can actually park at the Start/Finish... for free... and there's a McDonalds half a block away. :-)

The OIM races aren't that competitive... it's a giant Running Room Love-In... run clinics from two provinces feed to it. Last year, Stanton handed out the swag (despite a crappy performance, I lucked out for two awards to go with my finishers medal)...

The Full (supposedly) starts before the Half and 10K, so you might get to watch those wimpy, short-distance runners burn by...

Running ~3:50, you'll have plenty of pacers and any wind shouldn't affect you too much... could be a good race... IF you don't sleep in your car! :-)

Re: BC Runner's Forum
Hi all......... Thanks for the info Andele. Made a reservation, so I wont hafta sleep in my car! Well, as of today the taper starts. I confess I am looking forward to it. Ran the whole 26.2 this morning, mostly to assure myself that I could actually do it. It took 4 hrs and 15 min with breaks subtracted. All in all it took me 4:26:33. I surely hope that I can improve on that time as I am going for 3:50!!! I did not push myself, but I have a definite respect for the distance. Backs of my legs and my feet ached toward the end. Think I will try new insoles. Anyway, I hope everyone had a terrific run today, the weather was perfect! How is everyone elses' training coming on?

Yow! I've been putting my faith in the "race day will carry you those few miles farther than you ran in training" school of thought. Pushing my scheduled 21 to 22 was as far as I was willing to go - my hip is still twinging just a bit, even if it is mostly healed. Going into taper this week!

Today was supposed to be my last tune-up race, but all that was available was the Terry Fox run, and I'd rather have something certified and competitive. So I did next week's LT run today. I hate the track, but it is getting easier. The past couple of weeks I've been going faster with less effort.

I think maybe the Tree For Life 10K in Burnaby, next week:

It's certified, fairly level, and closer than Abbottsford.

Re: BC Runner's Forum
Jennsh,

Are you planning on running the Trail River Half at PoCo this October or are you volunterering just like you did last year? I signed up for it a week ago...apparently it's an out and back route from Hyde Creek Community Centre to Peace Park and back..from last year's course description it didn't seem like it. It will be a very scenic run though...it's part of my favorite long run route..

Bob, Maureen, and Andele: good luck on your upcoming marathons..I guess you should be tapering now eh?

Started my taper a little earlier than planned... came down with a cold this week, which hurt training. Too soon. I'll look to maintain and ramp down the last two weeks... something like 85... 60... 35...

Bob H. - I'm with you on the "magic of race day" school of marathoning. My long run tops out at ~22 miles. Taper, adrenelin etc. improve pace and endurance considerably compared with lead-up training runs.

Re: BC Runner's Forum
Slide Show at Vancouver Planetarium - Sunday 24 October - 7:30 pm

This multimedia slide show will inform you about the little known Sunshine Coast Trail, a 180-kilometer long wilderness trail near Powell River, British Columbia. It will entertain you with the story of how 4 Vancouver runners tried to run it, non-stop, from Sarah Point near Desolation Sound to Saltery Bay. Get a sneak preview of the film documentary that is being created on the running adventure. Hang out with hikers, bikers, runners, naturalists, loggers, media people and others who are curious about this gem of a trail that's only a few hours north of Vancouver. Enjoy a chance to win awesome draw prizes that include running shoes and outdoor gear.

Cost: $10 if pre-registered, $12 at the door.

All proceeds from the event will go to PRPAWS (Powell River Parks And Wilderness Society). The Sunshine Coast Trail desperately needs funds for maintenance and to fight the cutting of old growth trees that are already painted and flagged. All who attend will be eligible for draw prizes.

We have a tentative confirmation that Eagle Walz, chief architect of the Sunshine Coast Trail and author of the definitive guide to the trail will be available to sign copies of his book, "The Sunshine Coast Trail". We plan to have a supply of "The Sunshine Coast Trail" available for $17.12 including taxes... a must have if you plan to hike or run any part of the trail. (Chip in $100 or more and you get a free autographed book and a bear hug from the Eagle himself!)

The Vancouver Planetarium (HR MacMillan Space Centre) is located at 1100 Chestnut St., Vancouver. There is ample free parking. Your admission to the slide show also includes admission to the planetarium, so plan to come early and double up on your admission fee! There is only one show, so please register early to avoid disappointment.

Hey stranger!!! What 50km are you doing? Coming back to Vancouver perhaps? Fat *** is having an 80km in early November if you are interested.
I'm formulating my race plans for next year & it looks like Elk Beaver is high on that list.

Good luck to all the Victoria 'thoners!! My mother's gonig to be there for her 11th marathon.
