Nothing against Lagat really. It's just that people had pretty much left Webb for dead, and it's great to see him jump in there and finish with a kick like that. Guess I phrased that wrong.

Got it. Agree w/ you that it's nice to see Webb live up to his potential (sometimes, it seems, in spite of himself)...

He definitely has the Dr. Jeckyle Mr. Hyde thing going on. By the way, I raced with you at the Mid South Half at Wynne last year. You came in ahead of me, I was at 1:24:27...11th I think. I'm not a huge fan of the out and back thing, but that course actually flowed pretty well I think. Is that on your radar this year?

Re: Where did that come from?
Webb's final 100m was 12.9 vs. 13.7 for Legat. But it was really the accelleration in the final 50m that stood out. I don't have a breakdown for that, but it was really impressive. Webb needs a move that like in his bag of tricks to be competitive in championship races on an international level.

I found it interesting that Webb's final 100m was faster than anyone closed in the 800 (Robinson closed in 13.9), and only the top three 400m runners closed faster. Of course in those races everyone is slowing down at the end, while the 1500m guys are cranking it up. But it does give a little perspective on how fast Webb was moving. Manzano was nearly as good at 13.0.

Ha, small world! I liked that race--well-supported by the community and decent course--but don't think it's on my radar (unfortunately) this year. I'm going to do Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville and Columbus half, so it doesn't quite fit in...but I'll be back again.

You know, I met another runner from Wynne in May at the Corinth 10k. Decent guy: I think he finished w/ you or right around you.

Hey, do you know that guy in his late 50s who put down that 1:24 something? Age-graded, that's a wicked, wicked performance.

Re: Where did that come from?
Yes. David Williams. He finished one second in front of me. I was chasing him for the last 2 miles, and got right on his heel coming onto the track, but he had just enough to hold me off. He's a great runner. Still runs a 17:15 to 17:40 5K....he's amazing.

I've never stuck a fork in Webb, the guy is just as incredibly inconsistent as he is talented. I guess part of the exciting part of his races is wondering which Webb is going to show up...

Re: Where did that come from?
Just on Dixon. He ran 3d, not 2d in 72 behind Vesalla and Keino. In 74 he missed a medal (4th) in the Comm. Games 1500m, running the 5th fastest time in history, his 3.33.8. That was the most exciting race I've seen with Bayi running 54.9, 1.52.2 and 2.50.8 enroute to a WR 3.32.2. Walker was 2d 3.32.5, Jipcho 3d 3.33.2, Dixon 4th and "Gruffie" Crouch ran a new Oz record and 7th fastest ever to finish 5th in 3.34.2.
Dixon just missed a medal in 76 in the 5000m behind Viren, fellow kiwi Quax and Hildebrand.
His 10k time of 28.11 is actually his road best.
He also won 2 bronze at World Cross.
In 1980 he missed the OG because of the kiwi boycott. He took his frustrations out on the US road circuit and was very, very successful. He eventually moved up to the marathon where he had great success.
