Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26

I'll start us off even though i had a bad week and will probably out of the loop for a while!

My goal 5k race went badly on Saturday. Started off okay but my heel was nagging me throughout and i fell off the pace mile 2. Mile 3 my calf started hurting too and I limped home in 16.18. Have taken this as a sign that my body needs a rest so am going to chill out for a while, try and get my heel sorted and then start back up again in the Fall. I've been logging 60-70 miles a week for the past 6 months when my previous average was 40-50 plus I've been running through my heel problems all summer so I'm going to start physio tomorrow and try and get it sorted.

FWIW my week was

M- off
T- 8.25
W- 2.5 w/up, 1600,1200,1000 all at 5k goal pace with 2 minute recoveries, 2.5 w/down. Hit all these at sub 5 min pace feeling very comfortable so was pumped for Saturday after that- little did I know!!
T- 6.5
F- 6
Sa- 2m w/up, 5k in 16.18, 1m w/down
Su- off

Hope everyone else had a good week!

Sa- 12.75 miles very easy w/group 7:31 avg

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
Su: 11 at long run pace (8:00) with last mile at 5:40.
M: 8 easy
Tu: 4 easy on treadmill
W: 8 steady, about 7:40 pace
Th: 9, with 4x200 at :43 each. Tried to run at goal 10k pace.
Fr: 3 easy on treadmill, with last mile each 1/4 run at 7:30 pace, 7, 6:30 and 6:00 pace.
Sa: 8 total, 10k race in 40:00. Too hot for a long warmup or cooldown.

Total: 51

The 10k was the hottest race I have ever run, and one of the most hilly. Temp was over 80 with high humidity. Luckily most of it was in shade. I went out in 6:12 for the first mile and decided to try and run by half marathon effort. I finished 3rd overall (obviously a very small race) but felt controlled the whole way. It was too hot and hilly to think about running a fast time, or even a tempo run for that matter. It turned out to be a smart decision, because the next morning I ran 14, the first 12 easy long run pace and the last 2 at 5:45 pace and felt strong. The last 2 miles were a major effort, since that pace is about 4-5 mile race pace for me.

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
Mainers,
Very sorry about your continuing heel problems. Was the calf issue from compensation for the heel? Hopefully rest and treatment will have you good as new soon. 16:18 isn't bad considering how brutally hot it was Saturday.
Dan, That was another good week.65 miles with a day off on singles is stout.
Tusca,
Are you feeling better?

My week:
M-6
Tu-9
W-8 including 5 progression tempo, finished strong.
Th- 8
F-8
Sa-8
Su-13
Total-60

Hey Laker and esteemed others,

Sort of. I've been hitting the pool and stair stepper mostly, and been putting in some faithful PT and strengthening/flexiblity work. As the week progressed, leg felt like it was loosening up and not nearly as sore.

HOWEVER, the one run I did do, I ran in some cumbersome brace in 100 degree heat and the knee was a bit sore after wards. I told the doc about it today, and he said, "well, we'll schedule you for an MRI"; he just wants to make sure there isn't any loose cartledge "floating around"...

In my un-medically trained opinion, I don't think anything's really THAT messed up with my knee as it has been improving--granted, sans running. I don't know...any thoughts you guys have?

Anyhow, nice race Mainers, but sorry to hear the PT is flaring up. It's a stubborn injury--have you been giving enough attentioon to your calves and stretching, as that often is the root of the problem.

Andy: seems the legs are coming back round.

MRCT: Ditch the time on that race and call it a training run. Those conditions are brutal.

Dan/Laker: Your weeks look like they're coming together...

My training week went as such:

M: 1 hr on the stair stepper, moderately hard.
T: am: 10x5 on/1 off, 70:00 pool; pm: 50:00 stair intervals +med ball/core.
W: 1:40 pool run: 5x(1 on/1off, 2 on/1 off, 3 on/2 off, 4 on/2 off 1 on/1 off).
R: am: 40:00 pool run, 15x1 on/1 off+weights/core; pm: 4 mile jog in brace---like I said, knee was kind of sore.
F: am: 40:00 pool, 6x3on/2off; pm: 90:00 pool, 8x8 on/2 off.
SA: am: 50:00 pool 1-5:00, 5:00-1:00, 1:00R+weights core; pm: sick from cold baby brought home from daycare.
SU: Still under weather from baby's cold.

Today, I feel better, but like I said, doc wants an MRI to be sure. So, there's the long-winded answer....

PS: If I don't get my *** back in gear soon, I'm guessing I'll have to scrap that Dec marathon? What's the least amount of time you guys prep for the marathon and still did well? Obviously, I'll move it back if need be, but just curious...

i have been although maybe not enough!

I knew things weren't right down there but I've been able to keep it under control by resting and easing off appropriately. Meanwhile my training and racing was going great so I carried on with this approach until my goal race. Saturday I've taken as my wake up call that this short term approach needed to be ditched so I can get over my problems once and for all, so that's what I hope to do now!

I don't have enough marathon experience to answer your query I'm afraid! having said that, with your base you should still have some time to give it a decent effort in December I would think, even if you have a couple more weeks cross training

High arches? Pronation? Weak in calves and/or heels? How's your propeception? Just general questions I was asked when I dealt w/ this.

I had it bad in college and orthotics was the solution for me...

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
Boring week for me:

S: 19.5 @ 7:17 pace - nice and easy - comfy weather
M: 9M progression run - 3M splits: 19:30,18:26,17:55 (6:12 p)
T: 9M progression (easier) - Splits were 19:44,18:48,19:17 (6:25p)
W: 9M run - tried to keep it easy - Splits 19:25,18:30,18:23 (6:15p)
R: 9M run - 3m splits 19:52,19:12,18:42 (6:25p)
F: 5M in some good heat and humidity 3@18:46, 2@11:40 (6:05)
S: 2.5wu @ 8:00, 8.5 @ 7:17 in some nice heat

71.5 miles for the week at a pretty good intensity. Now this week a slight taper (60-65miles) for a labor day race (10k). This gives me ~70mpw average over last 5 weeks - however, I am fearing that I won't do well since I haven't been running track recently but we'll see.

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
Hey guys,

My week was light enough that it's not even worth mention other than 23 miles due to a slight calf strain during my first taper week. I appreciate ya'll letting an uncompetitive guy post in the competitive forum though Quick question...my injury is a calf/achilles strain that I always get when I push mileage up to a new level. First it was 40mpw, then 50, etc all the way up to now it hits me when I try to hit 70 more than one week in a row. Is it normal to get the same nagging pains as you progress to new levels? Thanks!

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
This really is turning into the "injury thread"! I wish you all a speedy recovery!

I'm happy to report that I made it through the Hood to Coast Relay sore but uninjured. What a gret experience! My fifth year in a row with this team although we always have a few new additions each year. Obsessor was one of them. We successfully defended our Mixed Submasters title, crossing the line of the 197 mile race about 40 min. ahead of the next team. Since we started at 7:45pm on Friday night, as the second runner, both my legs were in the dark. The first leg was a 1500 foot elevation drop over about 5 1/2 miles. It was more like controlled falling. I didn't dare push the pace, my quads would have been destroyed. I still managed a 5:52 ave. which for me is a one mile PR, five times in a row! Next it was hop in a van, try to eat, try to sleep (both which weren't very successful) then run again 6-7 hours later. My second leg was fairly flat and my final leg had a two mile hill toward the end. I took a Starbucks Double Shot 30 min. before my final run and manage a pace faster than my second leg! Overall distance for me was 17.5 miles at a 6:35 ave. pace. We celebrated on the beach in the beer garden Sat. night before heading out for real food followed by real sleep. Oh, and I should mention the celebratory homemade cherry wine that Obsessor and his wife brought with them! Managed a two mile run barefoot on the beach the next morning with Obsessor, his wife and another teammate then watched as Obsessor took off for another couple hours worth of running. His handle that he uses for his posts is accurate! Quads are quite sore as expected but no worse than after a marathon I suppose. Still trying to catch up on my sleep. To give you an idea of how tired I was, when I got home Sunday night, I had trouble following the directions on a box of Hamburger Helper as I made dinner!

I've been elected team captain for next year; big shoes to follow. I think I'll start recruiting early January for next year's race so watch for my post if you're interested!

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
aharmer --- I get right-hip piriformis syndrome every time I up my mileage again after any sort of decent time off. EVERY TIME. When I first started consistently upping mileage from the 50 mpw range to 80-100 mpw, I had all sorts of things pop up, then go away. Sometimes I adjusted my training, sometimes I trained through, depending upon how serious I thought it was. It's normal.

Tuscaloosa -- In 2002 I had a very mediocre summer, averaging only about 50-60mpw after having done 70-80mpw a lot previously. I had a decent 10-mile the first week of August, so decided to jump into Chicago. Basically I trained as hard as I could tolerate and limited myself to 80 mpw instead of topping at 100 in order to enable more quality. I did some sort of fast work every day, even if only 10X1min surges at the end of a 10-miler. It resulted in 2:29, a 7min PR at the time.

In 2005 I had a really bad training summer, looking back it was probably a combination of anemia and heat intolerance, just like I have this year. I gutted through every workout and 70-80 mile weeks until late July, when I couldn't break 16:30 in a 5k despite all the running so I just quit and ran 15-20mpw up until 2 weeks before Chicago. Then I got a couple weeks of solid work in. I still ran 2:36, which was I felt was amazing considering what happened.

Bottom line, if you do SOMETHING to maintain your fitness, a lot of the base you have built will not go away.

Multiple types of changes occur from training. Some are more long-term-- cardiac stroke volume, capillary density. Some are more moderate, like mitochondrial number. Some are relatively short-term, like blood volume, enzyme levels, and hemoglobin levels, which greatly affect VO2max.

IMHO, this makes (perversely) the well-trained runner who experiences a setback in the months leading into a marathon in a much better position than the 5K runner in the same position. The marathon is much more dependent upon the longer-term improvements; you don't run at VO2max in a marathon. For the 5K runner, if they have a significant drop in VO2max they are screwed.

The way I'd handle it is to maximize development of short-term, VO2max affecting variables....ie, focus on intervals and fast tempo runs rather than volume as you normally might for a marathon.

Andy,

Thanks for the info. That is really, really helpful! I suppose I'll keep at the pool as long as need be and hopefully maintain my fitness. It's boring as all **** though.

Laker,

Can you email me at jwoodcanyon@yahoo.com? I have some questions to ask you about your tri-training and don't necessarily want to clog the board w/ it. Of course, no rush...

Re: Training summaries 8/20 to 8/26
At the time, I was not displeased with my Hood-to-Coast results. But now that I see it on paper it does not look as good as I had hoped. All in all, a great experience. Dealing with all-night running on no sleep and little warmup and cooldown - tough. We had a good time, though!

(legs 9, 21, 33) 38:04 over 6.89 miles, (5:31) on gravel, gentle downslope in the dark; 27:39 over 5.0 (5:32) on gravel, gentle downslope early in the morning; and then 45:27 over 7.79 (5:50) on pavement, rolling hills, in misty blowing rain. I was very happy to have survived. The first two miles of the last leg were fairly painful. My "strategy" was to simply run as hard as I could on every leg, and the slowdown probably shows that. I'm not sure what the best plan is...

the week?

M: 9 and 11(hills)
Tu: 10
W: 5 in MN, 10 in OR, including 4x1mi off-road, 5:07 avg.
Th: 8 and 5 easy.
F: 5.
Sa: (see above)
Su: ~2:20 ...

Somewhere between 110 and 100 miles - much unmeasured, but I have a good idea of it, based on time.
