Wanjiru running Fukuoka

Samuel Wanjiru, Paul Tergat, Atsushi Fujita and Toshinari Takaoka headline the elite field at Fukuoka on December 2.

I know that Wanjiru has never run a marathon and Tergat and Takaoka are among the giants of the sport, but I think the hype is justifiable. Wanjiru has run 26:41, which he did as a junior in the race where Bekele set his world record, and holds the half marathon world record of 58:33.

Tergat is, well, Tergat.

I'll confess that I didn't know too much about the Japanese guys. Takaoka is old at 37 (though not as old as Tergat) and on the comeback trail, but he has a 2:06:16 to his name from 2002. Takaoka was also 4th at Helsinki. Fujita is also a 2:06 guy, and that 2:06 is the course record at Fukuoka.

This really ought to be the sixth major marathon. The two questions: who do you think will win and how fast will Wanjiru run?

I say Fujita wins and Wanjiru runs 2:07.

Foreign Runners:
Paul Tergat (38, Kenya), 2:04:55
Haile Negussie (28, Ethiopia), 2:08:16
Daniel Yego (28, Kenya), 2:08:16
Alberto Chaiqua (34, Portugal), 2:09:25
Mark Carroll (35, Ireland), 2:10:54

Domestic Runners:
Toshinari Takaoka (37, Team Kanebo), 2:06:16
Atsushi Fujita (31, Team Fujitsu), 2:06:51 (course record)
Shigeru Aburaya (30, Team Chugoku Denryoku), 2:07:52
Atsushi Sato (29, Team Chugoku Denryoku), 2:08:36
Yuko Matsumiya (27, Team Konica Minolta), 2:09:18
Samuel Wanjiru (21, Team Toyota Jidosha Kyushu), 58:33* (world record)

I think if the weather is good, the worst Wanjiru runs is 2:07. I would expect 2:05.

Re: Wanjiru running Fukuoka
Hadn't read this that Wanjiru was making his debut at Fukuoka...with the crappy distance running news we reeive here in the US, I'm surprised I even know who won NYC!! That explains where Tergat was this fall season - I wondered why he wasn't at Chicago, Berlin, or NYC.

About as "pancake flat" as London (which is to say not at all). Why would Fukuoka be slower than London? More world records have been set there than in London.

Re: Wanjiru running Fukuoka
Always interesting to see how fast half marathoners run the full marathon. Does anyone know what mileage Wanjiru does? If high, then sub 3 min/km (2:06). If low, 2:07 plus. If conditions are great, I wouldn't mind putting a bit on a WR.

"This will be the foundation. I want to run the marathon in the Olympics and so I want to take a good first step toward making that a reality." Next April`s London Marathon will be the Kenyan Olympic selection race and Wanjiru intends to compete. "This time I only plan to win in a 2:06. With the experience I gain in Fukuoka I will go much harder next time."<HR>

Admit it, after reading that quote wouldn't you love to see him blow up. Respect for the distance.

I hope humility was lost in the translation. If not, my money is still on a fast time, but a crash-and-burn would melt the heart.

Re: Wanjiru running Fukuoka
Looks like he ran a very steady race - Just following the plan, confident that he could take the race at the 40K mark.

Now we have to wait until London to see if he can make good on part # 2.

Yes, looks like the perfect first marathon. Even pace to the 22 mile mark, change of pace to shake off his opponents, cruise to victory. Would like to see what he can do when he puts the foot down.

Not too shabby of a debut!
