Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Thanks Gottagetfaster. The map shows they have added some two non-bridle trails. One is early and the other is about at the half-way point. We should be fresh enough to dodge those roots!

I have one more week before tapering. I am going to make the best of it. I will try to get in over 50 miles which includes a 20 miler Sunday or Monday. I plan on running two runs a week in Umstead that include those non-bridle trails, so I can feel more comfortable with what we are about to face.

I am getting excited as March 5th approaches.

This will be my last marathon for the year. I plan on going in Cary road race 5k, Run the for the Bulls 10k this summer and 1/2 Umstead marathon this fall. The stress of the marathon training is too much with out a break. I miss the speed work.

My plan is to do Grandfather mountain marathon in the summer of 2006. Hope to see you there.

Hey all:

I'm a Chapel Hill runner registered for the inaugural Knoxville Marathon (www.knoxvillemarathon.com) on March 20th (my second, after doing Richmond last fall). It's quite scenic and challenging (plenty of hills, though not terrible); I lived there during/after grad school from 73 to 77. So if you've been training and haven't yet made plans, you might consider it because some spaces are still available.

I ran the Sycomore trail this past weekend and discovered it is pretty darn hilly. The last portion of the trail seemed to be straight up! At one point I was grabing trees to help get up. After seeing this trail, I am thinking that it might not be a very good idea to have any specific time goals!

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
I ran the Company Mill Trail today. This trail is run near the beginning of the marathon, and it too was very hilly. The trail twist and turns and rarely is level. You seem to always being going up or down. When your going down you have to be extremely careful with the numerous roots and rocks that are there to twist your angle. We are on this trail for 1.5 miles. Plan on taking this one slow, and note there is little to no room to pass, but if your behind my fat butt and want to pass, just let me know and I'll be glad to step to the side!

When I ran it today, I put in a 5k pace effort and was only able to get a 10 minute/mile!

I plan on running the Company Mill Trail a few times more, and I will include the Sycamore Trail also. Thanks for the heads up on the difficulty.

Also a warning for the Cedar Ridge Trail. This trail turns into a single file trail about a mile into the trail and tends to be muddy in spots with a few steep hills--making the footing a little dangerous since this is run near the end of the marathon.

Well when I signed up I wanted a challege--I would say I got one!

The Company Mill Trail isn't too bad if you run it counter-clockwise. Personally, I think Umstead is uphill every direction. Has anyone run the Turkey Creek trail? I tried to run it this weekend but I couldn't find the trail.

I have run the Turkey Creek trail several times. It connects to bridal trail near the Sycamore trail, but it ends at Ebenezer Church Road on the other end. You then run along Ebenezer for a bit - but there is a huge shoulder where the have recently moved Ebenezer so there is basically a trial beside the road. It seems to be the toughest section of bridal trial in the park, in my opinion.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Well I had the chance to run Company Mill Trail and Sycamore trail today. I see your point about Sycamore's long hill at the end. I have to vote Company Mill Trail as the most difficult--though I was able to run the trail faster today with less effort.

I ran eight and half miles in Umstead at a marathon pace and was able to go under 10min/mile pace--great! I run twenty in Umstead Monday afternoon and will try to put a 10:30min/mile pace together. This will be the last super long run before the race. I hope to be ready to finish around 4:20, but I realize much depends on how I feel race day.

Good luck with your last long run. I ran my last one on Saturday. I will run 14 this weekend in Umstead and I will try out the Company Mill trail. I am not really looking forward to it if it is much tougher than the Sycamore trail.

Good luck in a few weeks.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Well I ran my twenty, opps, I ran my nineteen and walked one mile. First, I was amazed at the North Turkey Creek Trail---a beautiful, well maintained trail that is very hilly--the steepest hills in the park! Second, not wanting to carry my Gatorade very far, I left it at the Reedy Creek Lake area while I ran the loop shown in the marathon map. Third, I wore myself out the day before raking and seeding with not much to eat. These collided in a tougher than normal run--I was dehydrated and starved miles before the finish. I was very disappointed with my performance. I kept dreaming of eating a Snickers bar at the end of my run!

I will try to run my next long run, around 14 miles, in Umstead also. Good luck to all.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
lesil22, I plan on running the Umstead Trail Marathon March 5th and I don't plan running any races before then. In fact, I'll be so slow in the marathon that I wouldn't necessarily say I was racing!

After March 5th, I thinking about Cary Road Race April 9th: 10k or 5k.

Good luck in China Grove if you chose to go--sorry there is nothing local here on the 26th.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Ran some medium runs in Umstead over the week, but did my last long run of 15 miles on the pleasantly flat American Tobacco Trail. I plan on three more medium runs in Umstead before the marathon.

Gottagetfaster, did you run the Company Mill Trail?

I have decided that a faster than 4:40 finish will be my goal instead of the 4:20. While this is slow, I think it is realistic based on my training experiences to date. I have been able to lose about seven pounds and this has helped, but I underestimated the hills. Now I have more respect for how tough this marathon is. I plan on using how I feel and my heart monitor to aid in my pacing--I will adjust my pace to try and finish faster than 4:40.

See you at Umstead!
