Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
cinderella 18- I am not a woman, but I don't think I would worry much about running in duke forest during the daytime; I have never seen anyone sketchy in there, mostly just dogwalkers and other joggers. It's really not all that isolated. there are lots of trails, I don't know them all; when I go I just park at one of the spots along nc-751. If you're looking for something that's a little bit in between, you can run the trail around the duke golf course; you don't really see much of the golfers, it's moderately hilly, and very well-travelled (no safety concerns). To get there, park in the lot just south of Erwin Rd on nc-751, or in the lot near the washington duke inn (751 and science drive). If you'd like to meet up to run a few of the other trails, let me know and I'd be happy to try to arrange something.

Does the Cary Road Race still end on the track? I always thought that was kind of cool. I finally made out to the Turkey Creek trail--it is an incredible trail. What a hill!

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
They moved the Cary Road Race to Regency Park. I think this is a good idea. I ran the course, and I think you may enjoy the one mile run around the lake to make up for not finishing on the track at Cary High School.

Umstead 100 starts Saturday:

Wondered if anyone was in this? I planned on going out Saturday morning for a run around the park and give my emotional support to the runners.

Hmm, thanks, didn't think of that!! My friend bought some shoes there and was very unhappy -- they made her knees hurt after running about 5-10 miles in them, they still looked fine, but they wouldn't take them back! I don't know about going there. . .Has anyone ever been (the one in cameron village?)

I will be working one of the aid stations on Saturday morning and afternoon, but there is no way you could get me to try and run 50 or 100 miles!

Have fun sharing the trials with the ultra folks.

Looks like a squall line will pass through Saturday morning. This is going to be rough on the Umstead 100 runners and volunteers. I think I'll push my run in Umstead to Sunday morning.

Good luck runners and volunteers.

cinderella18 -
My favorite Duke Forest loop is on Whitfield road. Just east a half mile from the New Hope fire station on Whitfield there is an entrance with many cars parked along the road. The wide open trail loops around to the fire station on Whitfield and then you follow Whitfield back to the car. It's a scenic, hilly 4 mile loop. Great for hill training. Many runners and dog owners. I run with my dog always.

Gottagetfaster, it looked a bit dicey Saturday morning. How did you and the runners fair in the Umstead 100? I came out Sunday morning and saw about thirty some runners still on the course.

I was there from 10:30 until 1 pm and everyone looked good. I had to go do some work around the house for a couple of hours and that is when the weird weather started. I think the temperature dropped 15 degrees in a few minutes and there was some hail. I got back out to Umstead aroun 3 pm and there were some really wet and cold runners. We were providing custom fit garbage bags and they were going like hotcakes! Several of the runners looked to be in rough shape. They had started their laps in fairly warm weather and proceeded to run through rain and ice and with the temperature dropping very fast. Our aid station was about 4 miles from the start/finish, so most of the runners were just trying to make it back there so they could change clothes.

This was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone - helping at the aid station that is, not actually running one of these events.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Does anyone know of problems parking on Trenton Road outside Umstead Park? There are "no parking" signs posted, but it seems to be a common practice to park there. I figure its a risk, but where else can you go to run before the park opens at 8:00 AM?

I have parked by the No Parking signs on Reedy Creek road on many Saturday mornings and have never received a ticket or gotten towed. However, I am ususally leaving the park by 9 am, so I do not know what happens after that time.

There are usually 5 to 10 cars parked when I am leaving, so there are a lot of other people using the same entrence.

I have been a bit concerned about the safety of my car, but so far nothing has happened.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Thanks Gottagetfaster.

Well with the Cary Road Race days away I have successfully gotten sick! I can only hope to feel well Saturday to at least put in an effort for my 50 minute finish--but not looking good.

Any chance someone could write an Umstead 100 report? I would like to hear about anyone's experience in the race.

Calfpain, welcome to the board.

I am hoping that your name is based on past problems and that you are currently a healthy runner.
