Well I like the I/O 1/2. It is an exciting race. So you know my leaning. You would be running in familiar territory.
Plus I love running in the Umstead portion. The race is challenging, so if you were to improve your time that would be something extra.

Gottagetfaster, are still on schedule with Pfitzinger's 70mpw plan? You must really be putting in the miles now!

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Hi Jen,

I'm still around. . . sort of. I'm STILL having issues with my stress fracture, and I just had the doctor tell me to take another month off. . . so I can start running again in the beginning of October. I'm so aggravated!

So how is VSH working out for you? Have you ever worked with Sarah Carotenuto? She's in my class and works there part time, I think mostly just on the weekends.

Hope all is well with you! I hadn't heard that the umstead trails were dangerous in particular, although I guess they could be since a lot of times there's not that many people on them. . . maybe it depends what time you run. . .like I wouldn't really be bothered running on the hiking trails on a saturday or sunday morning, but at dusk I probably would avoid it. Maybe something happened there recently that I hadn't heard about.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Bob,

I am still on the plan, but I am running a few miles less than the 70 mpw. I will be hitting the 70 starting next week. This week is a semi-taper because I am running the running leg of the Duke 1/2 Ironman this coming Sunday and I do not want to embarass myself in front of my team. Next week will be the first 22 miler of this session, with 3 more to follow before November 12.

A few things:

1) You finished 931/1909 for your division. That's the 49th percentile, so you're better than average!

2) You did your best. If you're not happy with anything, just try to correct it for the next race. There are always more races...

3) I wouldn't dwell on the water thing. It sounds like you may be stopping at every water stop and that isn't typically needed. You really shouldn't need to stop more than 3 or 4 times in a half-marathon. What I do when I see a water stop ahead is pull out my Gu and swallow it before I get to the stop. This should be easy to do while running. I then run past the beginning of the water tables to avoid the crowd and grab a cup toward the end, then quickly step off to the side. I slow to a walk at this point and drink down the full cup, sometimes saving a bit to wash the Gu off my hands (the only thing I hate about Gu -- impossible to open w/o getting it on your hands). I can do this in < 15 seconds easily. Even if you stop 4 times you should only lose a minute.

4) Pee break -- nothing you can do about that. Personally I ended up running this race with a little more in my bladder than I wanted, but I didn't want to lose any time.

5) I'm not sure why you had trouble at the end. I know that my speed work and hill training (mostly the latter I think) really helped me with maintaining pace. Usually my quads give out on me but this time they were fine. Also I've already done 5 training runs over 13 miles. And I was well rested. All of that helped. Perhaps you can provide some more info on how you were feeling that last few miles? Overheated? Legs tired? Racing heartrate? Just out of energy?

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Well I have some bad news. The Western Wake Partners who are responsible for the new water treatment facility are looking to drive the water piping next to the Wake County American Tobacco Trail. This will close the trail for awhile and destroy the trees on one side of the trail. This construction may start in eighteen months. The Wake County Park is trying to get them to move the piping further away from the trail and provide at least a twenty-five buffer of trees.

I cannot understand why the Western Wake Partners would want to destroy part of the beautiful American Tobacco Trail and not take the effort to give the trail a needed buffer from this pipe?

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Hey Jay, thanks for the feedback. After I posted yesterday, I wrote out a 3 page race report for my dad (he's a triathlete and has run this race before). I felt a lot better, so I am not quite so in the doldrums now.

I think there are several things I could work on:
Practice drinking water on the run, or minimizing time spent at a water stop. I have been racing long enough to wait til the last water table then get out of the way. But I kind of use the time to walk instead of getting the water down and going. I think I stopped 4-5 times, but skipped at least 3 water stops during the race.

I was mostly OK til the 10 mile mark. Actually, til 11.5 miles. I had one 12 mile training run (I used the coolrunning beginner program, since they say it is designed for runners trying to run 2:00), and that was the longest. I know I skipped at least 3 miles a week on the training plan, and I do believe that cost me a lot. DH uses the same plan to run with me, and he was great through 10 miles and then crashed and burned during the last 5K.

I just felt like I ran out of gas. This IS the best I've felt in about 18 months during a half marathon, so I'm making progress. I also need to lose weight. I am a healthy weight, but I know I need to bring down the fat percentage and get back in the gym to lift weights.

So, it may not have been perfect, but I do not regret running it, and I'm not angry with myself. I DID give 100%, and I can't hold anything against myself. Now I know what to work on.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
I think you did well with the training program you used. To improve, you need to have some long runs that exceed thirteen miles. Forget that it says it is for two hour 1/2 marathons--I'm not sure why that is written.

Jump up to the intermediate program--you will do better.

Only the government would tear up a project it had just completed...

sigh.

Sounds like some longer long runs will help with that. FWIW, here's what my 1/2 marathon and marathon racing history looks like (I'm leaving out a half dozen or so 10 and 12k races):

01/26/03: 1:56:54 (Home Depot 1/2 Marathon)
10/26/03: 2:02:50 (Jungle Run 1/2 Marathon)
12/07/03: 4:22:22 (California International Marathon)
02/01/04: 2:00:10 (Home Depot 1/2 Marathon)
01/08/05: 1:48:12 (Ocean Isle Beach 1/2 Marathon)
01/30/05: 4:15:42 (Miami Tropical Marathon)
09/04/05: 1:42:29 (RnR 1/2 Marathon)

I used Hal Higdon's Novice program for the first half marathon. This was after I had been running for about 6 months. I think my goal was 2 hours. The Jungle Run was a "tune-up" race as part of my training for the CIM. I used HH's Novice program for that as well. My goal for the CIM was 4:20. I ran the second Home Depot 1/2 on basically zero training ... took most of Dec/Jan off for recovery. I think a calf cramp at the end of that one slowed me down.

The OIB was a tune-up for the Miami Tropical. I don't recall which HH program I used for the MTM but my goal was 4 hours. It was probably the Novice program again. Unfortunately I took all of December off from training and only got in a single 20 mile long run. I probably shouldn't have run the MTM at all but my excellent results in the OIB convinced me I could do it. I finished with a PR but went out way too fast (went out at 9 minute pace but ended up walking lots of the last 8 miles...). I chalk up my good results in the OIB to the marathon training I was doing for the MTM.

Right now I'm doing the HH Advanced I training program for the Cape Cod. My goal time had been 4 hours, but I've since revised it to 3:45 and I'm considering revising it again to 3:36 (8:15 pace). Clearly all the speed training has really helped my pace. The last few weeks I haven't followed the HH Advanced I to the letter, subbing in equivalent swimming time for the short days (e.g, instead of running 4 miles, I swim for 40 minutes). I did this due to my previously mentioned achillles issues. I think this will give me the extra rest I need w/o compromising fitness.

One week before the RnR I completed a 20 mile long run on Sunday which followed a 10 mile run the day before. I then took the rest of the week off. I ran an easy 6.5 miles the day before the RnR. But even with that I still faded a bit that last 2 miles. I chalk this up to two things: 1) going out a little fast. 2) heat.

During all of this I've steadily (but slowly) lost weight. I was almost 190 before I started running. I'm 155 now. I'd like to be no more than 150 on race day in October.

I do most of my training on a treadmill. Weekend runs are at Umstead/ATT as weather allows. I wont run outside anymore with the dew point over 70, though thankfully it looks like we don't have to worry about that anymore this year.

As long as I'm sharing, I may as well throw down the gauntlet. I set a goal about 18 months ago to qualify for the Boston before I'm 40. I turn 34 this Dec 24th. I now think I can qualify for the 07 Boston by running a 3:15:59 qualifying race sometime next year. If I am able to do that, my next goal will be to run a sub-3 marathon. After that, I think I'll be pretty durn happy to just maintain my fitness level, though a few co-workers have been trying to convince me to do an olympic distance triathlon. :-)

Anywho ... I'm not sure any of that will be a help to you at all, but I was in a sharing mood. :-)

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
oh boy, I've got lots to respond to here!

bobalu thanks for the directions!

swatkins The rationale was that it was pretty desolate. If I got seriously hurt, it could be a long while before I could find help or help could find me.

emlennon Good to hear from you, I know Sara very well! I'll be at State tomorrow with Kathy D. from anesthesia to interview. VSH is miserable I quit about 2 weeks ago..long story!

runamy You are not too fast for me., my most reliable pace is right at about 10 minutes, so my long runs are a bit slower than that, I'm too slow for you! Thanks for the offer, but I think you'd be bored, bored, bored with me.

I actually did my last long run at the ATT in New Hill with a friend, that place is sooo great. The only downfall I can see is the lack of potties!

Thanks again for all your responses. The positive, friendly attitude "in here" is one of the things I love about my new home in NC.

Great days and runs to all.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
I am happy to report my instincts about my headache medication were right. I have dced the medicine and I have had 2 consecutive fabulous long runs. Last week I did 24 (I was scheduled to do 22 but felt so good I ran an extra 2 miles). Today I did my shorter long run of 13 miles and again felt great. I can even run up the big hills on the North Turkey Creek Trail and the Bridle Trail without an issue. One more long run till the marathon October 9. Woo hoo!

Swatkins, congratulations on figuring out your meds. It sounds like you had a great run. I am still waiting for the first time that I feel so good after 22 miles that I throw in a couple of extra miles. You have my respect.
