Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
If you on the west side of Cary, you may not be too far from the American Tobacco Trail parking lot. If you are near the center or north Cary, Umstead is close. Both these parks have excellent bridle trails.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
I am pretty sure the Museum Trail is asphalt like the rest of the greenway. Bob's suggestion for running in Umstead might be the best way to avoid running on concrete or ashpalt; however therer are those slight hills in Umstead to consider.

I am hoping to get back into my routine of running in Umstead every other weekend or so. I hate the hills when I am running them, but my joints like the hills and my ego likes the hills once I have finished.

Ack is right, Amy! Take care of yourself and we'll hope for quick healing.

I'm having one of those inner dialogs today - do I run tonight or do I take it off? Lots of reasons to run, lots of reasons to take it off. Good reasons on each side, even. Guess we'll see in 4 hours when I leave work and turn left for the gym or right for home.

Safe running to everyone over the weekend, especially anyone racing.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Just wanted to drop an invite to you guys to join some of the south easstern ClubHouser's December 3rd at the Charlotte marathon. We have two relay teams set up already, but we'd love to have anyone interested come join us. I think there's a 10k option. There'll be a social after the race. I don't think there's a recent thread going in there right now, but just post a new one or chase down sistergoldenhair, luckylily, GaReb, Profound Samurai, DogMom or myself.

Knoxes, I would love to come join you, but I am recovering from Richmond and can't make it. However, we are looking forward to a detailed report on the festivities.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Oh, does anyone know any gyms with pools in Cary? Coworkers have suggested Rex Health and I used to coach at the Y, so I'm familiar with those. I'd like something not too expensive or crowded, though. (I know, a not crowded pool in the Raleigh area?!)

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Amy,

I have just recently learned about the Optimist Pool off of Six Forks Rd in Raleigh. I understand that it is a covered (with a bubble) pool open to people for a small fee. The Pullen pool is also open year round. Neither of these is in Cary, but they might be better than nothing.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Well, I was a guard with the City and the Y for a long time, not to mention the 2 years I spent as a year-round swim coach with the Y... Ironic I'm having to search for a pool now.

I found 4 options that would work (and I'm posting them in case it helps someone else out).

1. Morrisville Rec Center - Bubble, 5 lanes, $3 entry fee if you're a resident, $6 otherwise. Pretty inconvenient lap swim times for people who work. Doesn't appear to open til 10 am or so.

2. Rex Health and Wellness - Fairly steep sign up fee ($200) and it would be $88 / month for both Mike and me to join. However, more convenient lap swim times.

3. Cary YMCA - For my age group (young adult) it's $95 joining fee and $30 / month. It gets much more expensive if you add family members, etc, but we will probably go this route for location and time conveniences.

4. Pullen Park - Several ways to "join" from one time use fee, punch cards (15 sessions), month sessions (30), or year long passes. I used to guard here and can say it's a good facility, you just have to be prepared to share lanes early in the morning, especially if it's swim season and the high schoolers are there.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Well I decided to delay signing up for the Umstead Marathon just in case I get injuried. I look at the web site yesterday and in ten days they signed up 148 out of a maximum of 200. Well I went ahead and got signed up. It looks like this will get full sometime in December.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
Has anyone measured the South Turkey Creek Trail in Umstead from the East gate on Reedy Creek Trail to the beginning of North Turkey Creek Trail? I'll take GPS or better. The map in the web site Umstead Coalition is inaccurate due to the trail being extended a couple of times.

OK, I'll confess that I'm not very technologically inclined (what IS a web? WHERE is it?!) so the mapmyrun.com was a little easier.

Re: Raleigh, NC runners!!!!
I can hardle believe that the Umstead marathon is almost sold out. Twenty-one spots are left as of 11/27/05 out of 200. I'm glad the marathon has grown in popularity. Training is going well witha 14.4 run yesterday in Umstead including North Turkey Creek trail twice. My hands were pretty cold in the early morning!

Feeling good--not fast--just good. My feet, ankles and knees have improved since I've started using a well cushioned insert in my shoes.
