DC Running Clubs????

I am moving from London to Washington DC in 3 weeks. I'm VERY sad to leave the lovely Serpentine Running Club. Can anyone reccomend a social yet serious running club in the DC area? I have a car so I can get out to NOVA, but would prefer not to head up to MD.

About me: Right now I run 4-5 days a week, about 25 miles. I do one run a week with the club, about 4 1/2 miles at a 9 1/2 min mile pace (which is just right and pushes me).

I am training for the Army 10miler and would like to get my pace down to about 9:15-9:20 mile pace before race day.

Thank you!!!

Hi Rachel,

I'm moving this topic to 'The Neighborhood' forum where I'm sure you'll get a better response than in the 'Med Tent'.

Sorry I can't help, but I am in the DC area too and have been toying with the idea of a running club. I really think I need to to improve speed (feel like such a slow poke!) There are a few to choose from (NOVA and DC), but maybe there is someone on the forum that can speak to internal culture or perhaps a favorite area club?

Hm, can you reccomend any names? I saw a few that seem fairly competitive, and one that is all women, neither of which suits my needs... maybe someone in this new neighborhood forum can help???

Re: DC Running Clubs????
These are the ones I've heard of, I guess I am just too chicken to show up and see for myself!

DC:
DC FRONT RUNNERS
DC ROADRUNNERS CLUB
WASHINGTON RUNNING CLUB

VA:
NORTHERN VIRGINIA RUNNING CLUB
METRO RUN & WALK RUNNERS

Some of these I've heard of at races and such, others I saw on the Internet.

I arrive in DC close to August 30th. If you would like, we can go as newbies the same night? let me know if you are interested. running with the serpentines knocked 5mins off my 10k time! i really push myself when i run with others (i only run in a group once a week though, because I do enjoy my junk miles and long slow runs).

let me know, and i'll send you my email address.

Rachel -
That's what I've been toying with in my head as well, one group run per week (maybe track work?) to speed up my 10min mile pace. I haven't really worked on speed much, I've only just begun incorporating one fartlek run each week. I am ok with my 15-20mpw for right now. My longest run of the week is 5 and I am working on getting that up to 8. So two goals--get to 9 1/2 min mile and increase long run.

I am in DC (work) and Arlington (home) and you mentioned no MD -- so those groups leitnerj posted wouldn't work. But I definitely think having a newbie partner in crime would be super (a nice kick in the pants for me to stop talking myself out of it!). You can e-mail me at marsha_saunders@yahoo.com

Re: DC Running Clubs????
I also live in washington DC and am a member of DCRRC and WRC. But I do not run with them much cause of time constraints.

The DCRRC is a big club, where as the WRC is a small (& cozy) group of about 120 people. Their respective websites are given below -

http://www.washrun.org/[/URL" target="_blank"> (WRC)

http://dcroadrunners.org/[/URL" target="_blank"> (DCRRC)

Check them out, both have runners with varying levels of expertise. They also have a few social events from time to time.

Re: DC Running Clubs????
Thank you guys for the advice. Marcie, you sound like a great running partner (I'm about a 10 min mile too for comfortable runs, but closer to a 9 min mile pace for short runs (4 miles)). Let's definately meet up for a run when I get back. I have an interview on the morning of the 30th, so I guess I could do a run that evening. DC works better for me. The C&O canal is a fav run of mine. Where abouts in DC do you work?

Cheers,
rach

PadyK - DCRRC, are they the one's that run Burke lake every Saturday?

Rachel454 - If you ever need a running partner in the evening let me know. I work on the Potomac river and would be happy to run with you.

Rachel hasn't even arrived in the states and she seems lost already (just kidding).

Anyways, first off, the DC FrontRunners is a group for gay and lesbian runners(so I've heard). I don't know anything about them however.

The DC Road Runners, which meet at Iwo Jima(in Arlington, VA) at 7am, Saturday mornings. Training paces and distances vary. Usually get around 50 people or so weekly

FARC(Fredericksburg Area Running Club) meets on Sunday mornings, you can go to farc.org for more information on their weekly runs

The main websites for running resources are

racepacket.com
runwashington.com
farc.org

Fredericksburg is an hour from DC, or appx 75 miles south.
