Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Kneejerk, many runners find me overly conservative, but I find that one should train for a full two years before attempting a marathon. It can be done, but with a lot less satisfaction. There is so much work involved... Besides, there is a lot to be gained from running distances between 5 k (a demanding distance!) and the half marathon - and one of the things we learn is what kind of runner we are...

And you seem to have a talent for speed.

Hey JB! Yes, I'm still around. No, there is no better time, unless I can arrange to be back home by 8:30 AM, or starting the run at 6:30 PM. Bummer of a schedule. I might as well be in LV... But thanks for thinking of me. I'm sure I'll hook up for a run with the gang before my final departure for LV.

Grommit... Thanks for the Saturday invite, but my timing on Saturdays is even worse than on Sundays. But if ever you want to put in a run on a Wednesday or Friday morning, with an end time as late at 10:00 AM, I could do something.

Also, for anybody interested out there, I wouldn't mind company on a late night run on Tuesdays, or a dinner time run on Thursdays in the NDG/Westmount area. Post your interest for pace and distance information.

Well, I went from multiple posts each day to one per week, but here it is.

Once more, my congratulations to all the Ile-Bizard runners... you turned in some great times. And welcome to the new posters. It feels great to see all this interest in the Montreal area.

Train safe, and take care.

Mars

Coureur: I agree 120% to what you just wrote. Learn your trades on short distances. You get more out of marathon as an experienced runner.

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Hello everyone,

Friday at last, what a week. With all the ?not feeling well? nonsense all I managed were Mon, Wed 5k outdoors, and this evening 5k T/M. I can?t recall the last time I had such a low mileage week?serious bummer.

Saw the post for Sunday morning, I?d like to join in, I had a nice time two weeks ago..and I have treats for Titus, but I?ll have to see how I can work things out. I?ll check in again sometime this weekend to see what time KJ, JB (Titus) and anyone else are getting together.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Seems like a lot of us are sick at the moment.... I still have this headcold which is more like a sinusitis... I may just take another couple of days of rest, although I'm making eyes at my sneakers as I write this.

KJ: I would agree to certain point with Chops & Coureur on the idea of building up to a marathon slowly, give yourself enough time, get to know your body...... Personally, I had been running for about a year (like yourself) before I decided that I really liked the distance element. I then picked out a race with no real idea of what I was getting into..... bought a book with what seemed like a good program and went for it. The training seemed to go on for ever and more or less took over the rest of my life !! I will never forget the day before the 1st race, I drove the course (Adirondacks: http://www.schroon.net/course%20map.htm[/URL" target="_blank"> ) and at that moment I really wondered why was I doing this... I still haven't totally answered this question
If the race went well (which I like to think it did) it was because I trained better for that race than any other race I've ever run (more by luck than judgement) and arrived at the starting line ready.... From what little I know about you and your running I would chance my arm (flame-proof suits at the ready ) and suggest that you may be ready to take on some sort of long program with a race at the end of the fall..... or of course you can wait til next year... your call !!

Cheers

Grommit

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Coureur, Chops and Grommit: Thank you so much for your advices and expertise -I'm lucky! If I chose to do a marathon this september, it means that I still have until June to decide because the training would start in June... But I dont see why I could not wait until next year... Unless I really cant wait... Ho, I think I'm going to let the idea sit on the back-burner for a few weeks.

Chops: looking like you are "Gallowalking" on your pictures. hahahahahaha! LOL LOL LOL!!!

So Coureur, you think alternating between 5k and 10k would be a good idea (circuit Endurance)?

Df and JoeB: Would you like to go earlier on Sunday: 9:30 or 10:00? Or do we keep the 11:00? JoeB, dont tell me you are not coming!!! I wont take it.

Véro: Hello! the skier in you must be happy with all this snow.

Sally: Email me if you want to set up a running session with me in Villeray-Plateau.

Omni: 2 weeks antibiotics :-( You really had it rough. Make sure you eat lots of yogourt to replenish your flora!!!

I am celebrating my daughter's birthday today. I take 6 kids to Laser Quest on Ste-Catherine and Peel. While they are playing, I'm will go running in the Old Port for an hour. Then, pizza, then 5 kids will come at my place for a sleep-over... ho my god!!!

Have a good saturday everyone!

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Hi all,

Yep, Sunday is good for me so far, and seeing as the last couple of weeks I have barely made it on time, 11am is still a good time for me.

Does anyone know the distance of our usual run from the statue to the cross with a second loop at the top? I am thinking of extending my distances (a little bit at a time of course)

Cheers all,
Mitch

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Woah, too many posts. I'm overwhelmed. I've been very busy this week, but still made time to run. This is where I get my sanity from. I went for a 5K yesterday morning and this morning I did 7.5 miles (12K)...in some sort of windy snowy blizzard. I just got in...and now it looks like it is sunny outside. Uh...oh well it was a lot of fun anyway.
And yes I am a VERY happy girl, snowy days! I'm going skiing tomorrow. I'm very looking forward to this.
I love running in one inch snow, and I think my knees love it though. I like that everybody looked so happy this morning. I ran on Villeray until st-michel...then down to laurier then up on st-laurent then back to st-hubert. I usually try to run on very quiet roads...but I wanted to be around people this morning. I almost killed someone this morning. I was running and this woman was taking all the sidewalks space so I said excuse me and ran beside her. She SCREAMED her heart out. She never heard me coming. I apologized for 2 full minutes...she was more embarassed than I was. hehehe.

sorry to not post so much anymore, I'm going through some weird/difficult emotionnal relationship mess and I'm feeling very introverted.

Véronique

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Hi,

KJ: I tend to agree with the others to go for the full. It's a distance that demands a good self-knowledge, more experience you have the better control you got on your body. If I was you I would probably focus on the half this year and try to get confortable with this distance. And then try out for the full in spring or fall 06. But it's your call and listen to your feeling. Yes I do try to eat more yogourt, thanks for the remainder! I think I should be good to get back to running by the end of the week!!!

Véro: about you scaring a lady on the sidewalk! It happens sometimes to me as well when I run in the dark. I hate when it happens. I feel like a stalker :-(

I just went for a 10k (this way I can go to Indigo while the kids are at Laser Quest). It was gorgeous outside.

JB: okay for 11:00 tomorow :-)

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Beek9, Boutique Endurance is the only place to go if you're looking for running gear. Courir is okay, if you're lucky and you get an experienced runner/salesperson, but why settle for that?

Kneejerk, I think doing 5s and 10s will keep you fast and motivated. Someone suggested a Spring 06 marathon for you - just be warned that getting ready for a spring marathon means doing a lot of work during the winter. You may find it more interesting to train during the summer for a late summer, early fall marathon (and test your progression with summertime races).

In LaSalle I think I'll run the 2k, the 5k and the 10k.

One last note for those who will be running Mount Royal tomorrow: the loop is in pretty good shape (I suggest counterclock-wise, because the ups on the clockwise are too soft).

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
Hi KJ ? hope you survived the day with all those kids - and sleepover ? you brave soul ! I won?t be coming into town tomorrow. I?m feeling a bit better but still congested ? I?d be huffing and puffing up the hill ? might have to tie me to Titus. I also have to get ready for a meeting I have @ 4 ? and I?ve had no time to prepare today.

Hey JB ? showed munchkin the info you sent me, she was real happy, we?ll try and catch the March show, do you have a suggestion for a lunch in the area afterwards ? Not McD, but something a 10 year old will eat ?thanks again. Have a good run tomorrow.

Véro ? I scared an older gent wearing one of those big floppy fur hats a couple of weeks back, I felt so bad, he didn`t hear me coming ? I thought he would have a stroke right there..jeez?

A quick aside, thank you to all the runners with experience who have posted, answered questions, and offered encouragement. I haven?t had the easiest time getting info so this has been great. Coureur echoes my tentative plans for this year, 5 & 10s and prep starting in June for the ½ in Sept. Its nice to see I?m heading in the right direction !

Df

PS Grommit, I?ve been meaning to tell you I have my ?Grommit specials? ? I decided to head into the supermarket on my way back one night to pick up some milk?when I hit that ceramic, yikes ! You had to see the expression on the kid?s face who was stocking shelves when he heard me clicking/clacking along trying not to slide into the freezer section..funny.. I luv my shoes..have a good trip ? Florida ? AGAIN ?

Re: Montreal Runners Forum
There was a time, Mr Lambchops, when there was a triathlon in and around Lac Brome and it was the nicest... except the water was so TRÈS cold... (I shouldn't talk like this, saying things like 'there was a time', lest people think I'm old, and I am not, it's just that I've been doing tris for so long, and when I started, there were just, like, one hundred if us, and there'd be just us, and now that I'm mostly a marathoner, when I get at the start line of a triathlon, waiting for the gun in water up to the navel, I find triatletes so big, now that I'm marathon size...)
