hi...running survey for a school project

Hey, I?m matt, an 18 year old student at eastern CT state university, and I?m new to coolrunning. I ran mid-distance and hurdles in high school, but always ran distance on my off-time and continued to after I graduated in ?03. I?ve slowed down because of having hectic schedules but I?m getting back into it again. I?m doing a project in one of my classes on ?the running community.? I made up a survey and hope you can take it. Elaboration and comments about the survey, what you think could improve it, and/or any additional comments or feelings about anything having to do with running is encouraged and would be awesome, but not required at all. I want this to be a fun thing but also something to help me out. You can contact me and send me the survey in any way you?d like to?my AIM screenname is stillrunnin11 (just like my username), my email address is stillrunnin11@yahoo.com, or you could post it on the website?which ever you prefer. Thanks a lot and hello to all you coolrunners?

How old are you?
Are you male or female?
Why/how did you start running?
Do you still run for the same reason?
What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you)
How often do you run?
How long have you been running for?
Are your friends/family fellow runners?
Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind?
Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how?
Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture?
Do you run solo or with others most of the time?
Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet?
Do you log or keep track of your running?
What other interests do you have?
Do your peers know that you run? Are you a ?runner??

Thanks a lot if you took my survey and if not, that?s cool too

Re: hi...running survey for a school project
How old are you?
27

Are you male or female?
F

Why/how did you start running?
Forced to pick some sport in high school by my parents, so since I am completely uncoordinated in anything involving a ball, I chose X-C & track (and tried not to trip too much!)

Do you still run for the same reason?
No, I love it so much more now! I've been running for 15 yrs, but just really got into longer distances (relatively, as in greater than 5 miles) over the past 2 years.

What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you)
Keeps me in shape, gives me a chance to zone out mentally, energizes me! And gives me something to be proud of when I do longer distances.

How often do you run?
3-4 times per week

How long have you been running for?
15 years

Are your friends/family fellow runners?
NO, unfortunately. I do not know anyone else who is into running as much as I am. Sort of disappointing, actually.

Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind?
Yes, a few half-marathons (2 total, probably another next year), and lots of local 5Ks, 4-milers, and 10Ks.

Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how?
Hard to remember, it was so long ago...

Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture?
Absolutely A lot of it is right here!

Do you run solo or with others most of the time?
Usually solo. I miss running on a team - that was 10+ years ago, though.

Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet?
Possibly... probably more by the fact that I just eat a lot.

Do you log or keep track of your running?
Yes, I track everything on Cool Running (miles, routes, times, etc)

What other interests do you have?
Yoga, rollerblading, sailing

Do your peers know that you run? Are you a ?runner??
I think so - at least they consider me to be one! And so do I!

Re: hi...running survey for a school project
How old are you? - 36

Are you male or female? - Male

Why/how did you start running? - I was 12 when a neighbor of mine convinced me to run a neighborhood road race

Do you still run for the same reason? - Sort of. I still enjoy races, but I'm more into distance than speed now; I run because I feel it's part of my identity.

What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you) - It's a de-stresser. But it also challenges me, especialy now since I'm sort of a retread.

How often do you run? - Usually five times a week

How long have you been running for? - 23 years (eek!)

Are your friends/family fellow runners? - Very few. My sister-in-law picked it up a few years back; my soon-to-be brother-in-law was avid about it until he met my sister. I have many running acquaintences, but nobody I'd call a close friend.

Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind? - Yes. I do 5ks all the way up through marathons. Would like to try an ultra.

Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how? - I'd say running helped me come out of my shell. I was an extremely shy kid, and while I still don't talk much, running is something I can use socially.

Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture? - I'm a firm believer of this. Contrary to popular belief, running is a social sport.

Do you run solo or with others most of the time? - Solo. Can't remember the last time I ran with somebody else.

Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet? - Probably not. I've improved it quite a bit as I've aged, but I'm still not anal about what I eat. It's just common sense: A balance of fruits, vegetables, meat and starches.

Do you log or keep track of your running? - Yes

What other interests do you have? - I like to play the stock market; I'm an avid reader

Do your peers know that you run? Are you a ?runner?? - Oh, yes.

Re: hi...running survey for a school project
How old are you?
23
Are you male or female?
female
Why/how did you start running?
I started because I hate there being something that I can't do. I had to prove it to myself that I could do it. Getting in better shape, losing weight and relieving stress were an added bonus.
Do you still run for the same reason?
Yes and no. I still run because I need to still get in better shape and lose weight, but now I'm addicted to going farther and faster and that feeling afterwards.
What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you)
Challenge me, relax me, give me sometime to think about nothing rather than work, problems. etc..
How often do you run?
3-4 times a week.
How long have you been running for?
Only since end of April, ~5 months
Are your friends/family fellow runners?
My sister did run (out of order with sciatica right now), she introduced me to coolrunning and the couchto5K program. My mom's trying to become a runner but doesnt really like it. I have a friend who I can drag out on runs occasionally.
Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind?
I've only done 2 races: a 5K and a 10K. They were more for goal setting than actual races.
Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how?
I havent changed that much, but it helps remind me that I can do anything I set my mind to.
Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture?
There definitely is a runner's community. Just listening to people before races talking is evidence of it. Sometimes it can be a little elitist though. While everyone is running for themselves, I think the people who run tend to be competitive and/or driven people and they arent always the most welcoming to newcomers, especially if you dont fit there concept of what a runner looks like or runs as fast as. (there are lots of nice people though!)
Do you run solo or with others most of the time?
Mostly solo but occasionally with a friend whos willing to go my pace.
Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet?
Ha. ha. ha. Yeah right.
Do you log or keep track of your running?
Informally. I just pay attention to my mileage each week in my head.
What other interests do you have?
I like hiking, camping, traveling, exploring, playing the piano, mountain biking and other stuff outdoors. I'm a grad student though so I get to have much of a life.
Do your peers know that you run? Are you a ?runner??
I don't tell everyone about it because I'm overweight (60 or so lbs) and I feel like they wont believe me. To other runners I don't consider myself a runner, but to everyone else I do.

Hope this helps!

Re: hi...running survey for a school project
How old are you? 36

Are you male or female? Female

Why/how did you start running? When I was a freshman in High School my gymnastics coach made us run before every practice. I hated it. I didn't run again til I was 26. I started again for stress relief and because I was feeling huge and out of shape.

Do you still run for the same reason? Yes and no. I run for stress relief and to stay in shape but I also run to get faster and be able to go longer. My goals have changed.

What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you) Yes, yes and yes. It also provides focus in my life, gives me time to think, gives me time when I'm not working for everyone else in my life, gives me a sense of accomplishment.

How often do you run? About 5 times a week.

How long have you been running for? 10 years

Are your friends/family fellow runners? Several family members are runners - brother, Sister in law, cousins. I only have one friend that is a runner.

Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind? Yes, races. Usually 5 miles up to Marathon.

Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how? I'm more focused and more confident.

Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture? Yes absolutely. We even speak our own language.

Do you run solo or with others most of the time? Solo about 90% of the time

Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet? No. I eat way too much junk.

Do you log or keep track of your running? I track my miles and time on my wall calendar, I also keep a running log in a book and on the computer. I'm a little neurotic when it comes to tracking my work.

What other interests do you have? I like to bake, and hang out with friends and the regular stuff, but if you're referring to hobbies, I don't have any others.

Do your peers know that you run? Are you a ?runner?? Yes. Just about everyone I know knows I run. People I don't know see me out running and a couple of times a week I am approached by strangers that act as if they know me because they've seen in the morning so often.

Re: hi...running survey for a school project
How old are you? 20
Are you male or female? male
Why/how did you start running? I started running in my junior year of high school by joining X-country. I wasn't good in team sports and I wanted to find a sport that is simple enough for me to handle so I ended up with XC. I didn't do that well in XC though b/c I wasn't very committed to the sport for the first 2 years of my running career and I was still relatively new to running.
Do you still run for the same reason? No, I run more competitively now even though I'm not on the collegiate team. For me the challenge of pushing myself through racing and competition as well as attempting to reach my potential in the long term is what draws me to the sport. It's addictive in that sense...
What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you)- does all 3 things- relaxes, acts as a form of stress relief from the rigors of school and everyday life, and paradoxically it challenges me at the same time...
How often do you run? usually 6-7 days a week
How long have you been running for? a little over 5 years now
Are your friends/family fellow runners? sadly my family members and most of my close friends are not runners. Fortunately I'm a member of my school's triathlon club and I participate in group interval workouts held by the club. I also occasionally join group runs held by a local run club. By this way I have been lucky to meet up and socialize with fellow runners and triathletes who know what it means to be dedicated in the sport and share similar interests.
Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind? Yes. Usually mid to long distance races from 5ks to halfs both on road and X-country. Looking into doing the full marathon next year and possibly a tri further down the road once I get into cycling...
Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how? Besides the physical side, running and endurance sport in general has taught me alot in character building...self discipline, patience, determination, tenacity, self-confidence and self-esteem, goal-setting, long term planning...all are important not only in the sport but in everyday life as well
Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture? Yes, I believe so especially being part of a club of like-minded athletes!
Do you run solo or with others most of the time? Mostly solo although I usually do intervals with the tri club during the school year on Wednesdays and a group run with the run club once a week
Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet? Perhaps...I eat alot in general (although that's typical of many male college students), am a big fan of pasta and rice (and other high carb/starchy foods), consume lots of gatorade, and hardly drink any alcohol unlike many college students (I drink a little only once in a while)
Do you log or keep track of your running? Yes...I have 2 online logs
What other interests do you have? I swim and weight train, play the piano, enjoy science and nature, sportfishing, hiking, and recently delved into the aquarium hobby
Do your peers know that you run? Are you a ?runner?? Yes...they call me a "hardcore" runner...

Re: hi...running survey for a school project
How old are you?
35

Are you male or female?
Male

Why/how did you start running?
Junior High Track! Junior Olympics Mile!
We used to run this hilly mile prior to phy. ed. class and I used to beat everyone in my class. I think I ran a 5:02 mile during 7th grade track and then a 4:58 mile in the Junior Olympics.

Do you still run for the same reason?
Now, some 20 years later I run for many reasons, and of course the distance has changed, but mainly to keep that competitive edge.

What does running do for you? (relax you, get you out of the house, challenge you)
Gives me the opportunity to do what I love. Just slip on the shoes/shorts and go. Running sub3 in the marathon is my next goal.

How often do you run?
5-6 days per week. Sometimes twice a day during peak training, but usually only once a week.

How long have you been running for?
24-years

Are your friends/family fellow runners?
I have many friends who run. My twin brother is marathoner like myself. So that give me an extra push as well.

Do you participate in races/events? If so, what kind?
Mainly 1/2's and Marathons. Sometimes 3-4 a year in the last 2-3 years. I do run an occasional 5k, 8k or 10k for speed work and just recently signed up to run a 50k in December.

My next race is the Detroit Marathon on 10/24. #12 on my list.

Have you changed as a person since you started running? If so, then how?
Yes! I am more goal oriented and time conscious.

Do you believe that there?s a ?running community?? do runners make up a culture?
I think there is but it isn't like a cult.

Do you run solo or with others most of the time?
Usually solo, but do like the company of others on longer runs.

Could I tell that you?re a runner by looking at your diet?
Yes!

Do you log or keep track of your running?
Every day!
What other interests do you have?
Spending time with my biggest fan (my wife). Playing with my dog and gardening.

Do your peers know that you are a ?runner??
Yes indeed! There always asking me when my next race is or did you run 10 miles today. I don't think most of them really know what it takes to prepare for a marathon.
