Re: Memphis - 12/4/04
Haven't sent in my registration yet, but I'll be running the marathon.

Any projection as to how many people will be running the marathon?

Based on the elevation profile chart, Looks like most of the hills - and they look to be relatively mild inclines -are in the first 15 miles. Once you survive those, it looks like its downhill most of the way to the finish.

Re: Memphis - 12/4/04
I will be there to run the marathon. I also ran it last year and finished in 3:12:29 gun time. This year I am looking to do 2:55-2:58, depending on the weather, etc. I think they have changed the course a little from last year to make it flatter. Last year's course was not bad, some rolling hills along the way but no killers. Actually, I kind of liked having some hills myself. Last year around 1050 finished the marathon and a couple more thousand did the half.

Mailed my registration in today!

I am putting in my order now for a race day temperature of approximately fifty degrees, overcast skies, low humidity, and a very light breeze.

Re: Memphis - 12/4/04
Dawn, the hills aren't bad at all. I ran the half last year and it was a fun race. The course has some definitely interesting landscapes to run through: a mix of downtown streets (love running down Beale Street!), a riverfront boulevard, historic neighborhoods with neat older homes, pretty parks, etc. Do I sound like the chamber of commerce? The only two hills I really remember are coming up from the riverfront on to Beale Street (in the first 2 or 3 miles of the race) and a hill that you climb up as you leave the downtown area and head on to North Parkway (maybe around mile 5 or so?), a beautiful boulevard with lovely homes that takes you by Rhodes College.

I do live in the greater Memphis area and the hills on the course are certainly doable, sort of the gentle, rolling type for the most part. Now, the hills in Nashville...that's a whole other story!

I'm thinking of doing just the half marathon. I just ran Chicago.

Dawn, I'm a native Mississippian, too. I grew up in Jackson and went to Millsaps.

Stringwizard, I have a few recommendations for pasta meals:

Downtown: Portofino's (150 Peabody Place, #111)
Midtown: Boscos Squared (2120 Madison)
Midtown: Ronnie Grisanti and Sons (2855 Poplar)

Personal favorite: Boscos Squared...Yummy food and delicious, homemade beer. Definitely worth the short drive to Midtown.
